We examine this hypothesis by focusing on the textile and apparel industries in Southeast Asian countries, especially the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand. We found that there are two different kinds of value chains in these industries. In one, the lead firms are engaged in chemical fiber production, and, in the other, the lead firms are engaged in fast fashion retailing. The former is a producer-driven chain and the latter is a buyer-driven chain. In Southeast Asian countries today, we find these two different chains. Japanese chemical fiber producers during the 1960s and 1970s represented the former case, and today this type is found among Indian chemical fiber producers such as Reliance Industries, the Indorama group, and the Aditya Birla group.

She is currently engaged in researched for a book which exposes the unfortunate and harmful consequences of arbitrary enforcement of prostitution laws. From 1972 to 1982, she was a civilian employee of the Los Angeles Police Department, working as a traffic officer primarily in the Hollywood Division. There she encountered serious police abuse and corruption which she documented in her autobiography, Cop to Call Girl (1993- Simon and Schuster). In 1982 she was involved in an on-duty traffic accident, and being disillusioned by the corruption and societal apathy toward the victims of corruption, she decided not to return to work in any capacity with the LAPD. Instead, she chose to become a call girl, a career that would both give her the financial base and the publicity to launch her crusade against police corruption, particularly when it involved prostitutes. Unfortunately, she incurred the wrath of the LAPD and Daryl Gates when it became known that she was writing an expose of the LAPD, and as a result, she was charged with one count of pandering, a felony, and was ultimately incarcerated for 18 months. During her incarceration, she was the subject of a “60 Minutes” interview with Ed Bradley, who concluded that she was in prison for no other reason than that she was writing a book about the police.

Stern† ABSTRACT This Article uncovers a blatantly sexist dynamic that has persisted, largely unnoticed, in American common law for more than a century: courts are far more willing to accept invasive examinations for sexually transmitted infections in women than in men. Remarkably, this disparity has been justified by the same assumption throughout the twentieth century: women with STIs are viewed as a threat to the health of the general public, while men with STIs are viewed as a threat only to individuals, not the public at large. By examining cases involving men accused of rape and women accused of prostitution, this Article documents starkly disparate treatment. For decades, judges across the country have consistently relied on the stereotype that prostitutes with STIs represent such an alarming threat to public health that few measures go too far to stop them from promiscuously spreading these infections. On the other hand, rapists with STIs are a threat only to individual victims, not to the broader public, and thus health measures to hinder their transmission of infection must be far more limited. Together, these opinions comprise a cognizable legal doctrine—the “venereal doctrine.” This doctrine emerged in the early 1900s, as scientific advancements made relatively reliable STI testing a reality, and it evolved throughout the twentieth century.
