The traditional gifts of yesteryear had a practicality to them; less choice and a lower budget perhaps, Cbut there was a charming simplicity about choosing what to buy. Hand-knitted socks were top of the list, a new set of braces and shaving soap for the men, a Hotspur annual for the boys and a boxed manicure set and a new hair ribbon for the girls. Perhaps a tiny bottle of Evening in Paris or Californian Poppy for that special lady… and always an orange. So maybe lingerie-buying started when times got better and socks evolved into Nylons. Men realised they were on to a good thing; buy your lady something a little more alluring and even if you get the sizing all wrong she’ll be immensely flattered even by something totally unsuitable and usually out of character. But it can so easily go wrong. Make the wrong choice and it sours the whole day. There’s a fine line between sexy and smutty – don’t cross it! Even buying the lingerie gift can be traumatic in itself and the stuff of many a comedy routine. • Frequently Asked Questions
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS About the Sex Industry in Thailand Is prostitution legal in Thailand? Prostitution is NOT legal in Thailand. However, due to the billions of dollars it feeds into the country’s tourism industry, prostitution is being considered for legalization. Where do women in prostitution in Thailand come from? The majority of Thai women migrating to Bangkok to work in prostitution are from rice farming areas in Northeast Thailand. The majority of women we see being trafficked into Thailand from other countries are coming from Eastern Europe, Africa, and South America. How old are most of the women? The age range of Thai women working in the bars is between 17 and 50 years old. The average age is around 27. Although the legal age to work in a bar is 18, many girls start at 17. Younger women also work on the streets or in other venues. What factors push Thai women to enter the sex industry? A number of factors may push a woman in Thailand to enter the sex industry. ● Culture: In Thailand, a son’s duty is to “make merit” for his parents’ next life by serving time as a monk. By contrast, once a daughter is “of age,” she is culturally obligated to care for her parents. When a young woman’s marriage dissolves—usually due to adultery, alcohol, and domestic violence—there is no longer enough support by the husband for a woman to support her parents or her own children. As a result, when the opportunity to work in the city arises, she is often relieved to be able to meet her financial obligations through that work, no matter the sacrifice.

We examine this hypothesis by focusing on the textile and apparel industries in Southeast Asian countries, especially the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand. We found that there are two different kinds of value chains in these industries. In one, the lead firms are engaged in chemical fiber production, and, in the other, the lead firms are engaged in fast fashion retailing. The former is a producer-driven chain and the latter is a buyer-driven chain. In Southeast Asian countries today, we find these two different chains. Japanese chemical fiber producers during the 1960s and 1970s represented the former case, and today this type is found among Indian chemical fiber producers such as Reliance Industries, the Indorama group, and the Aditya Birla group.

She is currently engaged in researched for a book which exposes the unfortunate and harmful consequences of arbitrary enforcement of prostitution laws. From 1972 to 1982, she was a civilian employee of the Los Angeles Police Department, working as a traffic officer primarily in the Hollywood Division. There she encountered serious police abuse and corruption which she documented in her autobiography, Cop to Call Girl (1993- Simon and Schuster). In 1982 she was involved in an on-duty traffic accident, and being disillusioned by the corruption and societal apathy toward the victims of corruption, she decided not to return to work in any capacity with the LAPD. Instead, she chose to become a call girl, a career that would both give her the financial base and the publicity to launch her crusade against police corruption, particularly when it involved prostitutes. Unfortunately, she incurred the wrath of the LAPD and Daryl Gates when it became known that she was writing an expose of the LAPD, and as a result, she was charged with one count of pandering, a felony, and was ultimately incarcerated for 18 months. During her incarceration, she was the subject of a “60 Minutes” interview with Ed Bradley, who concluded that she was in prison for no other reason than that she was writing a book about the police.

  • The Venereal Doctrine: Compulsory Examinations, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and the Rape/Prostitution Divide Scott W
    (12) STERN_FINAL.DOCX (DO NOT DELETE) 6/19/19 4:19 PM The Venereal Doctrine: Compulsory Examinations, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and the Rape/Prostitution Divide Scott W. Stern† ABSTRACT This Article uncovers a blatantly sexist dynamic that has persisted, largely unnoticed, in American common law for more than a century: courts are far more willing to accept invasive examinations for sexually transmitted infections in women than in men. Remarkably, this disparity has been justified by the same assumption throughout the twentieth century: women with STIs are viewed as a threat to the health of the general public, while men with STIs are viewed as a threat only to individuals, not the public at large. By examining cases involving men accused of rape and women accused of prostitution, this Article documents starkly disparate treatment. For decades, judges across the country have consistently relied on the stereotype that prostitutes with STIs represent such an alarming threat to public health that few measures go too far to stop them from promiscuously spreading these infections. On the other hand, rapists with STIs are a threat only to individual victims, not to the broader public, and thus health measures to hinder their transmission of infection must be far more limited. Together, these opinions comprise a cognizable legal doctrine—the “venereal doctrine.” This doctrine emerged in the early 1900s, as scientific advancements made relatively reliable STI testing a reality, and it evolved throughout the twentieth century. Even following the rights revolution of the Warren Court, this doctrine DOI: https://doi.org/10.15779/Z38N29P69K † B.A., M.A., Yale University (2015), J.D., Yale Law School (2020).
