Consenting Adults Problems Associated with the Criminalization of Prostitution Guest Speaker Carol Leigh Wednesday, September 28 1:30 – 2:45 pm TH 105 Biography Carol Leigh has worked as a prostitute, activist, artist, performance artist, educator and author for more than 20 years. She coined the term “sex work” in the late ‘70’s. A long time spokesperson for COYOTE, co-founder of BAY SWAN and Act Up, and webmistress for the Prostitutes' Education Network Website, Leigh is a contributor to several anthologies including Uncontrollable Bodies: Testimonies of Identity and Culture (Bay Press 1994), Gauntlet (Issue #7), Policing Public Sex (South End Press 1996), Sex Work (Cleis Press 1987), Whores and Other Feminists (Routlegde, 1997), and The Strange Relationship Between Feminism and Sex Work (McGraw Hill, 2010). Last Gasp released her book, Unrepentant Whore: The Collected Work of Scarlot Harlot in 2004. Leigh has received numerous grants and awards for her video documentaries on women's issues and gay/lesbian issues, including 3 awards from Visions of US at the American Film Institute. Her video, Blind Eye to Justice: HIV+ Women in California Prisons narrated by Angela Davis, won Best Documentary winner at the Black International Cinema in Berlin. Leigh currently curates and directs the San Francisco Sex Worker Film and Video Festival. She has taught digital video production at the International Center for Digital Art and at the Center for Electronic Arts. Leigh has appeared on The Roseanne Show, Donahue, Nightline, Access America, Geraldo, and numerous other national and international TV and radio shows.
