Much of the assault on the soulfulness of African American people has come from a White patriarchal, capitalist-dominated music industry, which essentially uses, with their consent and collusion, Black bodies and voices to be messengers of doom and death. Gangsta rap lets us know Black life is worth nothing, that love does not exist among us, that no education for critical consciousness can save us if we are marked for death, that women's bodies are objects, to be used and discard ed. The tragedy is not that this music exists, that it makes a lot of money, but that there is no countercultural message that is equally powerful, that can capture the hearts and imaginations of young Black folks who want to live, and live soulfully) Feminist film critics maintain that the dominant look in cinema is, historically, a gendered gaze. More precisely, this viewpoint argues that the dominant visual and narrative conventions of filmmaking generally fix "women as image" and "men as bearer of the image." I would like to suggest that Hollywood cinema also frames a highly particularized racial gaze-that is, a representational system that posi tions Blacks as image and Whites as bearer of the image.2 Black bodies have become commodities in the mass media marketplace, particu larly within Hip Hop music and Black film. Within the epigraph above, both hooks and Watkins explain the debilitating effects that accompany pathologized fixations on race and gender in Black popular culture. -

The State of Sex: Tourism, Sex and Sin in the New American Heartland
THE STATE OF SEX The State of Sex is a study of Nevada’s legal brothels that situates the nation’s only legal brothel industry in the political economy of con- temporary tourism. Nevada is part of the “new American heartland,” as its pastimes, people, and politics have become more central to the nation. The rise of a service and leisure economy over the past 60 years has propelled sexuality into the heart of contemporary markets. Yet, neoliberal laws in the United States promote business but limit sexual commerce. How have Nevada’s legal brothels survived, while the rest of the country criminalizes prostitution? How do the brothels operate? Who works in them? This book brings social theory on globalizing econ- omies, politics, leisure consumption, and emotional labor in interactive service work together with research on contemporary prostitution and sexual commerce. 11 Slavery and Prostitution A Twenty-First-Century Abolitionist Perspective Melissa Farley A turning point in the British abolitionist movement was the publication of a now iconic diagram of a slave ship that transported slaves from Ghana to England.1 The drawing shows slaves stacked like sardines, 482 human beings packed into the hull of the ship. It was a factual diagram carefully drawn to scale. This powerful image sparked outrage in the public. To the slave owners and traders, the image was unanswerable. Overwhelmingly, the public responded: How can we abolish slavery? I know of places like that ship—in 2008 a California pimp transported young women, also lined up like sardines, in the trunk of his car, popping the trunk open for sex buyers to see what he had for sale.2 One of the young women who had been in that car was the fourth generation of women in her family who had been prostituted. She had grown up with homelessness, drug abuse, racism, incest, sexualization as a child and sexual assaults by neighbors and family, overwhelming community violence, physical abuse, emotional and physical neglect, a lack of educational resources, a lack of employment opportunities, a lack of social services or legal protection, and a lack of mental health services. Because she wanted to escape her captors, she tried to get arrested by soliciting for prostitution in front of police sta- tions. By the time she was eighteen, eight pimps had traded her, including two who put their tattooed symbols of ownership on her body (figure 11.1). -

Women have participated in numerous ways, and in a variety of complex cultural contexts, throughout the history of jazz in New Orleans. While we do see traces of women’s participation in extant New Orleans jazz histories, we seldom see women presented as central to jazz culture. Therefore, they tend to appear to occupy minor or supporting roles, if they appear at all. This Research Study uses a feminist perspective to increase our knowledge of women and gender in New Orleans jazz history, roughly between 1880 and 1980, with an emphasis on the earlier years. Although there has been no official scholarly study delineating these films as a documentary sub-genre, they have been variously termed portrait or biographical documentaries, and they are a persistent feature of both documentary film production and non-fiction television programming. This project aims to situate these films and television programs within broader cultural shifts that have occurred in the latter half of the twentieth century, including an upsurge in the ubiquity of images, distrust in the photographic medium’s ability to access the real, and dismantling of taste hierarchies. All of these changes fit under the broad paradigm of postmodern theory and culture, a societal condition that continues to evidence itself in the current age. Despite postmodernism’s proclamation that social relationships and individualism have collapsed, contemporary portraiture documentaries still aim to facilitate a sense of connection between viewer and subject. Postmodernism intersects here with what Richard Sennett has called the “intimate society,” which is characterized by a societal impetus toward personal revelation and emotional expression. I posit that portraiture documentaries represent the collision and working through of these two competing cultural features. -

Storyville, the city’s smallest and last vice district, existed from 1897-1917 under the protection of city ordinances. The laws attempted to confine specific vices and individuals within the geographic limits of the district to protect the sanctity of the white family and maintain private property values in the city. As a result, the district strictly managed the lives of women working in the sex trade through policing and residential segregation. -

Harris ©2013 Elizabeth Parish Smith ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Elizabeth Parish Smith: Southern Sirens: Disorderly Women and the Fight for Public Order in Reconstruction-Era New Orleans (Under the direction of Jacquelyn Dowd Hall) Whether enticing men into brothels, brawling on city backstreets, or pocketing employers’ trinkets, the working women of New Orleans threatened the public order that city authorities desperately wished to define by and for themselves alone. They were “disorderly” women, sometimes criminal, sometimes unchaste, and always ultimately ungovernable. “Southern Sirens” examines thousands of women’s criminal cases in New Orleans, Louisiana, from 1865 to 1877 and finds that, in this tumultuous era, the common women of the Crescent City became a cipher through which public order and political authority were contested. From drinking to stealing to fighting, even killing, their behaviors exposed municipal leaders’ limited ability to “keep the peace,” even through the city’s new, innovative regulation of the sex trade. That these transgressions so often drew from across New Orleans’s broad racial spectrum, involving white, black, Creole, and foreign-born women alike, further frustrated conservative efforts to reassert white supremacy over southern society. -

Why these men did what they did to me. Old, disgusting men. It was horrible. They knew I did not want to be there, but they paid their money. They used me. I was their property for the night. They destroyed me. (14-year-old girl at Casa Hogar, a shelter in Costa Rica for children rescued from the country’s sex trade1) OVERVIEW Prostitution has been called the world’s oldest “profession.” In reality, it is the world’s oldest “oppression” and continues to be one of the most overlooked human rights abuses of women on the planet today.2 Prostitution of women is a particularly lethal form of violence against women and a violation of a woman’s most basic human rights. While many societal institutions attempt to normalize prostitution, prostituted women are subjected to violence and abuse at the hands of paying “clients.” For the vast majority of prostituted women, “prostitution is the experience of being hunted, dominated, harassed, assaulted and battered.”3 It is “sexual terrorism against women at the hands of men and little is being done to stop the carnage.”4 Indeed, in “no other so-called profession are so many women murdered each year.”5 Above all, prostitution is not a choice, as some claim. -

Hartmann, Advisor Paula Baker Kevin Boyle Copyright by Jessica Rae Pliley 2010 Abstract This study explores the White Slave Traffic Act of 1910, commonly known as the Mann Act, a federal law that outlawed taking woman or girl over state lines for the purposes of prostitution, debauchery, or “any other immoral purpose.” It traces the international origins of the anti‐white slavery movement; looks at the anti‐ slavery origins and rhetoric of the anti‐white slavery movement; and contextualizes the American anti‐white slavery movement in a broader context of American colonial and racial politics. It then examines the Immigration Bureau’s experiments and investigations into white slavery, conceived by the bureau as foreign prostitution, to show how the Immigration Bureau agitated for greater border controls throughout the United States. At the center of this dissertation is the Bureau of Investigation’s enforcement of the White Slave Trafficking Act. Throughout the 1910s bureau agents struggled with how to enforce the statute: was it a law intended to protect young women from nonwhite men or police young women who in the changing sexual culture were increasingly experimenting with sexuality? In the course of the decade, the bureau experimented with ways to expand its reach while trying to contain prostitutes by tracking prostitutes who crossed state lines.
