Holland ___________________________ Frederick Moten An abstract of a dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English in the Graduate School of Duke University 2017 Copyright by Nikolas Oscar Sparks 2017 Abstract In “Lost Bodies/Found Objects: Storyville and the Archival Imagination,” I engage the numerous collections and scattered ephemera that chronicle the famed New Orleans vice district of Storyville to show the ways in which black life is overwhelmingly criminalized, homogenized, and silenced in narratives of the district. Storyville, the city’s smallest and last vice district, existed from 1897-1917 under the protection of city ordinances. The laws attempted to confine specific vices and individuals within the geographic limits of the district to protect the sanctity of the white family and maintain private property values in the city. As a result, the district strictly managed the lives of women working in the sex trade through policing and residential segregation. While all women were subject to these restrictions, black women were often barred from the relative comforts of the district’s brothels and forced to live and work out of shared shacks called “cribs.” Similarly, though to a much lesser degree, black men who worked in and frequented the district faced their own forms of segregation and racial violence. Turning to a largely obscured set of archival objects discovered through primary research—housing records, biometric technologies such as Bertillon cards, travel literature, and Blue Book guides—I read how discourses of waywardness, domesticity, race, and sexuality at the turn of the twentieth century converge to illuminate the vexed social life of Storyville. Previous archaeological studies involving the pattern analysis of brothel and red-light district assemblages have revealed high frequencies of medicine bottles. The purpose of this project was to determine whether a sense of privacy regarding health existed and how it could influence disposal patterns. The quantity and type of medicine bottles excavated from two pairs of middens and privies were compared. A concept of privacy was discovered to have significantly affected the location and frequency of medicine bottle disposal. A greater percentage of medicine bottles was deposited in privies, the private locations, rather than the more visually open and accessible middens. This study concludes that, while higher percentages of medicine bottles are found within brothel and red-light district locations, other factors such as privacy and feature type may affect the artifact patterns associated with such sites. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Many people helped and supported me throughout the process involved in completing this thesis.

    Charlie Mariano and the Birth of Boston Bop By Richard Vacca The tributes to alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano that have appeared since his death on June 16, 2009 have called him an explorer, an innovator, and a musical adventurer. The expatriot Mariano was all of those things—a champion of world music before anyone thought to call it that. Mariano was known for the years he spent crisscrossing Europe and Asia, but his musical career began in Boston, the city where he was born. In the years between 1945 and 1953, he was already an explorer and innovator, but his most important role was as a leader and catalyst. He helped build the founda- tion of modern jazz in Boston on three fronts: as soloist in the Nat Pierce Orchestra of the late 1940s, as a bandleader cutting the records that introduced Boston’s modern jazz talent to a wider world in the early 1950s, and as the founder of the original Jazz Workshop in 1953. Born in 1923, Mariano grew up in Boston’s Hyde Park district in a house filled with music. His father loved opera, his sister played piano, and starting in his late teens, Charlie himself played the alto saxo- phone, the instrument for which he was best known throughout his life. By 1942, Mariano was already making the rounds on Boston’s buckets of blood circuit. The following year he was drafted. It was Mariano’s good fortune to spend his two years in service playing in an Army Air Corps band, and while stationed in California, he heard Charlie Parker for the first time.

(Image by CFreedom) Newcomb Art Museum will host the world premiere of Postcards From Over the Edge, a new theatrical work that illustrates the historical struggles related to the sale of sex in Louisiana. Developed collaboratively by five New Orleans–based artists, the play explores New Orleans’ complex relationship with prostitution and is a local project of the National Performance Network. The performance shifts between the Storyville Mahogany Hall era, circa 1890, a time when prostitution was legal, and the actions of the modern-day civil rights movement.     University of North Carolina at Asheville The Appalling Appeal of the Octoroon: The Shifting Status of Mixed Race Prostitutes in Early Twentieth Century New Orleans A Senior Thesis Submitted to The Faculty of the Department of History In Candidacy for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in History by Mesha Maren-Hogan 1 In January of 1917 the working women of Storyville, New Orleans, one of the “wildest and woolliest” red-light districts in the United States, were preparing for Carnival season.1 For some of the district’s most affluent residents, mixed-race brothel owners such as Lulu White, possessor of “the largest collection of diamonds, pearls and other gems” in the South, and “the Countess” Willie V. Piazza, owner of a “two foot ivory, gold and diamond” cigarette holder used exclusively to smoke Russian cigarettes, Carnival season was a time of great business opportunities.2 These madams were busy purchasing cases of champagne and beer, lining up musicians to entertain and ordering new evening gowns and silk stockings.3 Meanwhile, reformers and city officials were hard at work on quite a different project. Led by Commissioner of Public Safety Harold Newman, Progressive reformers set out to clean up the image of New Orleans. One of their main pieces of legislation, City Ordinance 4118, cut right into the heart of the business that allowed White and Piazza to procure their diamonds and gold, namely the selling of the sexual favors of mixed-race “octoroon” women to white men. Ordinance 4118, set to go into effect in March of 1917, would have racially segregated the legal vice district of Storyville, forcing all non-white prostitutes to abandon their richly adorned bordellos and move into the primarily African-American area uptown of Canal Street.4 Ordinance 4118 shook the core of the social traditions and legislation that had brought octoroon women like White and Piazza to such heights of fame and fortune.
