It was a fabulous road: lots pated in numerous events of the Pacific Coast Rover Club while of off camber stretches; nice steep short climbs; great views! More organizing the annual Women’s Run. This event was for family fun; than once we crested a steep climb and halted, looking for the trail. you don’t need a huge event to enjoy your Land Rover – ed.] Seeing it resume to our left or right, we made the appropriate turn. Had we continued straight, we would have been on a one way trip to We are lucky here in the Pacific Northwest. What a drive! We striking distance from home. If a longer sojourn is desired the stopped once at Cow Camp, a cabin in the woods with a natural region can accommodate that as well! The latter was the premise of spring. At one time it had been a homestead, but nowadays it is our expedition to the Wallowas. Organized by Todd Eliason of the used by the Forest Service as a way station for their work parties or Pacific Coast Rover Club as a Father/Son, Mother/Daughter, forest management types. The grass in the middle of the track was waist high The Wallowas are an ancient mountain range distinct from the as well. It was not a well traveled road! The Forest Service had told Cascades and the Rockies. They border Hells Canyon, on the eastern us that campfires were permitted only in established fire rings, so as edge of Oregon. Travel time to the Wallowas is about 6 hours from we approached a grove of trees the hunt was on. We found the first Portland. Our meeting point was Enterprise, OR, chosen because it fire ring and discovered a commemorative plaque on the tree next to was basically an equal-distance drive from both Seattle and Portland it honoring a Boy Scout troop leader who had brought his troop to and we had participants coming from both locations. We were five trucks at that point, a nice sized group: perfect spot! It had taken us 6 hours to get here from Enterprise. Todd Eliason, our leader, with his son Noah in their Range Rover, It was getting late, but dusk lingered quite long at this elevation Shirley VanderVeen and her grandson Joe in her Discovery Series II, (about 5600 feet), plus we were on an exposed plateau, so setting Kevan Wiser and his son Ethan in their Range Rover, Clark Bowen up camp was not so bad. We could even see the dust lane of the Milky Way, not an half hours out we turned onto a four wheel drive road. With 20 easy thing to see! 8 One more truck joined our group that evening, arriving at about 11:00 PM. Christian Beck and his son MacLean had left Eugene in their Defender 110 at 6 AM and had pretty much driven straight through. They were tired and ready to call it a day. Next morning we all set out to explore the plateau. We had found a mountain lion skull the night before so we were all keeping our eyes and ears open. A short distance from our camp near the double track there was a wind sock securely mounted on a pole. It turns out that the double track doubles as a primitive airstrip. There are several such remote air strips around the northwest and it is not unheard of for adventurous souls to fly in for a night’s camping! One member of our group, Kevan, is a geo-cache enthusiast and he found a geo-cache on the plateau. It was an exciting moment for the little boys to trade trinkets for what was in the cache. It was the first time the cache had been found and opened since it was set in 2004. After a leisurely morning we finally got packed up and on our way to our next destination. We trekked out the same way we came in. It was just as much fun as it had been the previous afternoon. We visited Hat Point, a fire lookout station then headed back to Imnaha. It was in the heat of the afternoon and temperatures were hovering right around 100 degrees as we came down the 7 mile, 16% grade. Thank goodness for low range, it saved our brakes. We stopped in Imnaha and enjoyed the air-conditioned comfort of the local tavern/grocery store/pool hall. It was quite a place, and with very friendly locals. After some refreshing iced tea/beer/soda/ water/ice cream [not all together, of course] we were ready to brave the heat again. We headed along the Imnaha River toward Indian Crossing to spend the night in an “improved” campground. The road along the river looked stunning as it wound through a valley with small farms before heading back into the forest. About three miles from the campground, Todd came on the radio to say that he was having a problem with his truck. A belt had melted and things were just not working the way they should. I pulled ahead of him, shackled up a tow strap and pulled him to the campground. After a quick look around, we decided that “improved” camping was just not our style. So we left the group in one place and went scouting for better digs. A ways back up the road was an abandoned campground, over grown and empty. Perfect for us! We hooked Todd up again and towed him down to the new campsite and we all set up camp. The group put its collective heads together, made the necessary repairs to Todd’s truck and we were back in business. We were situated right on the banks of the Imnaha River. It was beautiful river whose rushing waters made a lovely sound. Em and I pitched our tent just a stone’s throw from the water and we slept soundly listening to its song. The next day was a “camp” day; we did not travel. Brad Mendenhall and his son Zack arrived about mid morning. The little boys (all aged 5-7) had a great time riding bikes, swimming, playing in the rocks along the river, playing games, fishing and just being lit - tle boys! Many fish were caught and released that day! Em and I read and enjoyed the sun and the breeze. It was rather warm in the afternoon, so I just put my chair in the river and read my book there. It was quite comfy, thanks. Buzz Chandler arrived very late that night in his Discovery, but with his rooftop tent, setting up camp went quickly. We hit the road again the next morning, running on pavement for a while before tak - ing a turn onto some gravel roads that took us to the most beautiful mountain lakes I had seen in some time. As Todd, in the lead, rounded one bend we heard on the radio that he was following a bear down the road! The gravel gave way to a dirt road and finally to a dirt track that took us down a long descent to a valley floor. It was an awesome trail crossing a fast moving stream with high banks. Clearly, this trail was not well used. At the end of the trail was the lit - tle town of Cornucopia. At an elevation of 6500 feet we had an surprisingly green. Almost all of the forest was carpeted in green unbelievable 360˚ view. We could see Baker City in a huge valley to grass and wild flowers. It was like spring had just come, but it was the southwest and the Blue Mountains beyond. Behind us and to the mid-July! The diversity of color and species in flowers dazzled us. north were the Wallowas, looking very much like a smaller version This mix of flowers and grasses made the lakes and rivers especially of the Alps. After our brief stop at the top of Flagstaff the water. As the viewer you were struck not just with the scenic Butte, we continued on this dirt track for several miles, winding our impact, but you were equally soothed and refreshed, coming away way through high prairie stopping occasionally to explore a potential with a lasting impression of serenity and the feeling that there are campsite and at each stop found fresh bear spoor and tracks. We stopped to discuss this as Adam was stuck at a muddy stream crossing. Going forward, the trail connected about 100 feet ahead, but that was by waypoints. When I walked it, there were thick downed trees, deep muddy sections, bugs, and only saplings to winch off. We decided to turn back and look for the real trail. I was able to turn around, and act as the leader, but I was no where near as effective at sapling persuasion as the 110. This was especially true with the tops now pointing right at my grille after our trip thus far. The hand saw was back out and we were making slow progress. We considered leaving the 110 since it was almost out of gas again and mired to the doors. Adam disappeared; I scouted forward to see how close we were to the trail and found only about 50 feet of little trees and one fallen log between me and relative freedom. I saw where we had entered this section. We had actually slid on axles down a fallen pine ! Then, I heard the roar of the 110. Adam had self extracted from the stream, turned, and was now right behind my Discovery. I got out of the way and let him lead the last leg out. We had gotten to the point where one says, “To hell with it. I’ll pay Rovers North for this later. Just go.” He was able to make his way between the bigger trees and smooth out the little trees so that my truck could follow. It was such joy to be back in the open section of trail again! We found the intended trail and returned past the beaver dam. My engine was getting hot again, but there was a breeze through the open windows that helped dissipate the blast from the heater. Adam was getting lower on gas again. We reached the forest roads and then the pavement. We were just approaching the main traffic light in town when Adam’s 110 stalled out of gas. He coasted across the intersection, through a parking lot, and right up next to a gas pump!

[Colby Morris works as an executive at Vermont’s Hummer/Chevrolet dealership, but he’s a huge Land Rover fan. The Vermont-native, St. Michael’s College grad returned home in 2000 to pursue his interestes in cycling, motorcycles, running and outdoor sports. He’s ready to plan more trips in his 109” after this great first expedition –ed.]

My interest in Series Land Rovers dates back to the late 60’s and early 70’s when I was a pre-teen. Once a month, my father would to bring me on his monthly visits to the local Land Rover dealer, then a dealer in S. Burlington,VT. I would crawl in and out, and on top where possible, of all the Rovers on the lot. My father never purchased one, I’m pretty sure he wanted one, but practicality probably got the best of him. All I remember was that I saw these things on Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom nearly every Sunday night, and they were cool! Fast forward to 1993; the first US spec 110’s start showing up at our local deal - My departure date would be June 22nd. Game on! er, I run down to hopefully buy one, but they’re way out of my budget! Jump again to This is the list of additions and/or improvements to the truck with explanations 2000, I’m ready to pull the trigger on a nice used 97’ Defender wagon, I do just that. where appropriate. The Defender was very cool…….but for me it was still lacking that “bag of bones” •Installation of Optima battery: rugged and unbreakable in the event of a rollover feel that the Series trucks had. After receiving the Rovers North Series/Defender parts •5 Cooper Courser tires (mistake - they’re bias ply and ride like bricks, I ended up catalog in 2003, I decided to get serious and find a Series truck. borrowing a set of radials for the trip) My first stop was EBAY and had no luck (went to Hartford, CT with flatbed in •Conversion of electrics from positive to negative ground tow to purchase a freshly restored Series III 88 EBAY truck that wasn’t so fresh and •Installation of a GM alternator with aftermarket kit (for additional amperage and came right back to VT…..one of many failed searches). I met Lanny Clark (formerly ease of field repair) of Rovers North and now on his own as Lanny Clark Rovers) through a friend and the •Pertronix electronic ignition (just personal preference; didn’t want to adjust points hunt was on. Eventually Lanny found a solid 1973 Series III 88”. I spent about a year in the cold and damp) upgrading and enjoying the 88”, parading around town just having fun. I’m not sure •Brownchurch roof rack when the idea to take a Series truck on an extended trip popped into my head, but in •Exmoor front seats late winter, 2005, I enlisted Lanny’s help again. •Center console (something to hold a coffee, and a place to rest my right arm) For space reasons I decided I would need a 109” to make a trip, wherever it •Fire extinguisher (required for safety) may be (the Arctic Circle was my first thought, but soon figured I would need to be •2 power points (charge my iPod, portable fridge, and satellite phone) independently wealthy to make that one). Newfoundland and Labrador seemed •Hella 4000 lights doable so that became my choice. As luck would have it, Lanny called me to let me •Land Rover rear work light know that a very nice 1967 Series IIA 109 that he had built from an ex-MOD •Power Tank CO2 tank (better than a 12v compressor in the event of flats or needing Ambulance might become available. The truck had been an ambulance in the to air down tires) Canadian military; Lanny had completed a beautiful restoration of the truck for a •Hi-Lift X-TTREME jack local gentleman in 2002. After a couple of phone calls and visit to the original owner, •Dixon Bate tow jaws the deal was made and I now had a near perfect 109” to start preparing for the trip. •Spade The real advantage I had with this truck was that it was already restored to a very •2 five gallon jerry cans mounted to roof rack high level; all that was left to do was get the truck ready for a 3000 mile trip on •2 five gallon water cans rough gravel roads with a lot of camping. •Eezi-Awn roof tent I could only wrangle 11 days off out of my employer to complete the trip. My •Old Man Emu Shocks distance calculations said that I was going to need to cover 2750 to 2900 miles in •Rovers North heavy duty parabolic springs those eleven days, a bit of a tall order for me and the 40 year old 109”! I was also •Spin on oil filter adapter going to be at the mercy of three different ferry schedules, the most critical of them •For spares I carried: rear halfshafts, fan belt, all hoses, ignition, coil, plug wires, running only every four days. I decided that the Rover and I could make it, so I spent water pump, fuel pump, misc. bulbs & replacement fuses, gear and motor oil, oil fil - from November of 2005 until June of 2006 gathering parts and preparing the truck. ter, coolant, radiator sealant, can of fix-a-flat, parts to take the overdrive out in case it 37 broke, gasket sealer, full set of tools to get the job done, and a fresh roll of duct tape! Of course, with all those parts, the only thing I used in 2756 miles was a half quart of engine oil. These Land Rovers are great trucks!! My route would take me from Vermont, through New Hampshire, Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, ferry to Newfoundland, ferry to southern Labrador, Trans Labrador highway to Cartwright, Labrador, ferry to Goose Bay, Labrador, pick up the Trans Labrador, cross Labrador east to west to Labrador City, pick up Rt. 389 South to Baie Comeau Quebec, at that point I’m back to “civilization” and headed home through southern Quebec. June 22nd, Day One, Vermont to Maine: My plan was to leave Vermont by mid afternoon and get into northeastern Maine by late evening, either camp someplace, or find a dive hotel to get some rest for what was going to be a high mileage day two. I was on the road by 3:30 pm on day one, and I had decided to really press the truck on the first and second days, thinking that if there were any ghosts in the machine at all, I wanted them to come out early while I was still in civilization, and within tow distance to Vermont! So I was off and running across VT, NH and Maine for the next 7.5 hours and 336 miles. By 11 pm I had made it quite a ways east on route 9 in eastern Maine which turns into a two lane stretch of nothing but woods [it’s a 90-mile road called “The Airline” –ed], and it became obvious that I was not going to find a dive hotel to spend the night. I came across a reasonable looking rest area and decided I and the truck had had enough for the day. I pulled over and parked the 109 under the only light in the rest area and popped the roof tent. One of the first things I learned on the trip was that a 1967 Land Rover 109” with a roof tent unfolded attracts A

38 LOT of attention. I was woken several times on that first night to the sound of cars Time), 1:30 ahead of Eastern Standard. I didn’t wake up in time to get to the ships pulling up to the Rover, often accompanied by some chatter or doors opening and restaurant for a quick breakfast, so I hustled to the upper deck to check out the closing, and my mind started working on me at times wondering if I was going to landscape of Newfoundland as we approached. Well, this is the point at which I hear a State Police speaker stating that I would have to move on! Note to self; hide thought “what the hell am I thinking?” A driving rain, heavy fog, temperature hover - the Rover at night if you ever plan to get a good nights sleep. ing around 50, and a landscape that looked like a glacier had just pulled away last June 23rd, Day Two, Maine to North Sydney Nova Scotia: I had a good chunk week, beautiful, but thoughts of breaking axles or overdrives and lying under the of ground to cover today so I wanted to get an early start. I was up at 6:30am, fold - truck in this kind of weather just were not very appealing. My consolation came in a ed the roof tent up, checked the oil in the Rover (all was well), made myself a cup local woman that was returning home asking me if I had ever been to Newfoundland of coffee with my Jet Boil French press (one of the coolest inventions ever), and I before, and singing the praises of her homeland and how beautiful it was, how I was back on the road at 7:30am.
