(Gen. 9:6) We live in a society which gives little respect to human life. Unfortunately, today’s society is self-centered and trying to satisfy its wishes only, rather than doing good to others and satisfying God. The first time in the Bible we read about murder is in the Book of Genesis. Cain and Abel were two sons of Adam and Eve. “Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a tiller of the ground. In the course of time, Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel for his part brought of the firstlings of his flock, their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So, Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted.

Podpis autora práce iii iv On the ancient peak of Ararat The centuries have come like seconds, And passed on. The swords of innumerable lightnings Have broken upon its diamond crest, And passed on. The eyes of generations dreading death Have glanced at its luminuos summit, And passed on. The turn is now yours for a brief while: You, too, look at its lofty brow, And pass on! Avetik Isahakyan, “Mount Ararat”, in Selected Works: Poetry and Prose, ed. M. Kudian, Moscow 1976. v vi My first sincere thanks belong to my thesis’ supervisor, prof. Ivan Foletti, for his observations, talks and patience during this time. Especially, I would like to thank him for introducing me to the art of Caucasus and giving me the opportunity to travel to Armenia for studies, where I spent five exciting months. I would like to thank teachers from Yerevan State Academy of Arts, namely to Gayane Poghosyan and Ani Yenokyan, who were always very kind and helped me with better access of certain Armenian literature. My gratitude also belongs to my friends Susan and colleagues, notably to Veronika, who was with me in Armenia and made the whole experience more entertaining. To Khajag, who helped me with translation of Armenian texts and motivating me during the whole process. It´s hard to express thanks to my amazing parents, who are constantly supporting me in every step of my studies and life, but let me just say: Thank you! vii viii Content Introduction.........................................................................1 I.

  • Ararat Marz Guidebook
ARARAT MARZ GUIDEBOOK 2014 ARARAT FACTS ARARAT Ararat is one of Armenia’s 10 provinces, whose capital is Artashat. Named after Mount Ararat, the province borders Turkey to the west and Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to the south. Two former Armenian capitals are located in this region, Artashat and Dvin, as well as the Khor Virap monastery, significant as the place of Gregory the Illuminator’s 13-year imprisonment and for being the closest point to Mount Ararat within Armenian borders. The province consists of 97 com- munities, known as hamaynkner, of which four are considered urban and 93 rural. Spanning an area of 1995 km2 and home to a population of 311,400 people, its administrative Center is Artashat which is 29km from Yerevan. Ararat borders the following provinces: Armavir to the northwest, Kotayk to the north, Gegharkunik 1. It is rumoured that Sir Winston’s favourite tipple came out of the Ararat valley in the east and Vayots Dzor to the southeast. Ararat also has a border with the city of Yerevan in the north, between its borders with Armavir and Kotayk. Ararat’s moun- tains include the Yeranos range, Vishapasar 3157m, Geghasar 3443m, and Kotuts 2061m, Urts 2445m. The province also has a number of lakes including: Sev, Azat, Armush, and Karalich as well as the Arax, Azat, Hrazdan, Yotnakunk, Vedi, and Artashat Rivers. During the period from 331 BC to 428 AD, the Armenian Kingdom was also known as Greater Armenia (Mets Hayk) and consisted of 15 states. One of those original states was Ayrarat.

1 The Stained Glass Windows of the Arminian Church of Our Savor The Stained-Glass Windows of the Armenian Church of Our Savor An Interactive Qualifying Project Submitted to the Faculty of Worcester Polytechnic Institute In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science In Mechanical Engineering By ___________________________ Abdullah Al-Shawk Date: 4/29/2020 Project Advisors: ___________________________ Professor Karen Kashmanian Oates 2 The Stained Glass Windows of the Arminian Church of Our Savor Acknowledgments: First, I would like to thank Professor Karen Oates for all the advice and support provided throughout this project. I also would like to thank all the members of the Armenian Church of our Savior. Special thanks to the priest and his wife who welcomed me to their community with enthusiasm and provided me with accurate timeline and history information of the stain glass. It is important for me to thank that WPI community who never fails to surprise me with their cooperation and willingness to participate in the surveys required for this study. 3 The Stained Glass Windows of the Arminian Church of Our Savor Abstract The goal of this project is to study the meaning behind the stained-glass windows at the Armenian Church of Our Savor in Worcester Massachusetts. The history of these beautiful windows has taught us that the combination of colorful lights not only provides a mesmerizing atmosphere inside the church, but also a lesson for those who believe through symbolism and metaphors. After interviewing the pastors of the church and analyzing the features and figures drawn in every glass, and upon analyzing the answers received from the surveys, we discovered that no more than ten percent of the survey participants understand the educational meaning of the stained-glass windows and each symbolism hidden in them.

AUTHOR OF 'THE RELIGION OF THE CRESCENT,' ETC. ' Te Martyrum candidatus laudat exercitns: Te per orbem terrarnm sancta confitetur Ecclesia. Tu Rex Gloriae, Christe I '-Te Deum. THE RELIGIOUS TRACT SOCIETY 56 PATERNOSTER ROW AND 65 ST. PAUL'S CHURCHYARD [A /l n'ghts reserved J PREFACE DURING the last few years the world ha~ witnessed a terribl.e spectacle. We nave seen a Christian nation in Asia, of the same Aryan blood as ourselves, suffering the most cruel wrongs at the hands of the Turks and their confederates, the Kurds. We have seen members of this Christian nation, men and women and little children, massacred in tens qf thousands, and our illustrated papers have presented us with photographic views of some of these terrible scenes. We have read of large numbers dying a martyr's death rather than embrace Islam, and have heard of those who had less courage and faith being driven at the point of the sword to repeat the ,creed of the. Arabian Antichrist. We have beheld some thing more strange still - the Christian nations of Europe hampered in their endeavours to put a stop to this state of things by their mutual ·distrust and jealousy of one another. And thus, as we draw near the end of the nineteenth century, our news papers are quietly discussing the question whether or not Turkey will succeed in exterminating the 6 PREFACE whole Christian population of her Armenian provinces, or in forcing upon them, at the sword's point, an apostasy worse than death.

Based on the same expectation, and considering the important role reserved for the Armenian woman in the life of our people, we proclaim the year 2010 as “THE YEAR OF THE ARMENIAN WOMAN” Indeed, women have started to occupy a central place at the present time, within the various spheres and structures of society, ranging from the family to the school, public organizations to governmental institutions, with their dominant voice and prolific activity. As with this Pontifical Message we invite our faithful to put Armenian women under the spotlight during the current year, it is necessary to observe them on a wider historico-religious basis, so that we can properly define and comprehensively evaluate their particular place and role withinArmenian life. * * * Women in the Bible As Christians, we consider the Bible to be the foundation of the truths, values and principles professed by us. Therefore, it is necessary to have the Bible as our point of departure when we speak about women.
