Songs that best cap- tured the strong feelings of Americans became very popular and lived on long after the details of the conflict were forgotten. Whether they expressed patriotism and national ideals such as inThe Star-Spangled Banner and The Battle Hymn of the Republic, sacrifice and heroism such as inWhen Johnny Comes Marching Home, or disappointment and loss such as All Quiet Along the Potomac Tonight, these songs have become part of the history. The Vietnam War was no exception. Below is a small selection of the many songs written by Americans, Vietnamese, and French about the Vietnam War. 1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour. -

Anderson A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Native Studies University of Manitoba Winnipeg Copyright © 2019 by Allyson Anderson ii Abstract This thesis investigates issues of representation and the social identity of the colonized by conducting a textual analysis of a fictive social construct that I dub the halfbreed girl, and of the ways in which selected metisse writers, poets, artists and performers respond to that stereotype in their respective works. Using methodologies in literature and the visual/performing arts, this thesis interrogates matters of social process: specifically, settler-colonialism’s discursive management of the social identities – in effect, the social place – of metis women, and how metis women negotiate this highly raced and gendered identity space. Emphasizing Canadian contexts, the images examined are drawn from North American settler-colonial pop-culture texts produced in the late nineteenth- through the early twenty-first centuries; the metisse responses to them are gathered from the same time period. The thesis includes American-produced images of the halfbreed girl due to the historic relationship between the two nations and the significant consumption of mass-produced American pop-culture media by Canadians – historically and currently. The first tier of the study demonstrates how the figure of the halfbreed girl is rendered abject through textual strategies that situate her at the intersection of the dichotomies, civilization/savagery and Madonna/whore, generating the racialized Princess/squaw polemic. -

As an organic interna- tional movement, remix culture originated in the popular music culture of the 1970s, and has since grown into a rich cultural activity encompassing numerous forms of media. The act of recombining pre-existing material brings up pressing questions of authen- ticity, reception, authorship, copyright, and the techno-politics of media activism. This book approaches remix studies from various angles, including sections on history, aes- thetics, ethics, politics, and practice, and presents theoretical chapters alongside case studies of remix projects. The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies is a valuable resource for both researchers and remix practitioners, as well as a teaching tool for instructors using remix practices in the classroom. Eduardo Navas is the author of Remix Theory: The Aesthetics of Sampling (Springer, 2012). He researches and teaches principles of cultural analytics and digital humanities in the School of Visual Arts at The Pennsylvania State University, PA. Navas is a 2010–12 Post- Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen, Norway, and received his PhD from the Program of Art and Media History, Theory, and Criticism at the University of California in San Diego. Owen Gallagher received his PhD in Visual Culture from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin. He is the founder of TotalRecut.com, an online com- munity archive of remix videos, and a co-founder of the Remix Theory & Praxis seminar group. -

Bottomley The reissue is a significant yet under-studied aspect of the music industries and popular music culture. The continual resurrection of recordings via reissues alters how the music and musicians of the past are understood in the present. This article develops a theory of rock music reissues, analyzing them as cultural artifacts that transform the originals’ historical meaning and cultural status. The influential role of paratextual and extratextual materials is closely analyzed through case studies of reissues of the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds, Gary Wilson’s You Think You Really Know Me, and the various artists compilation Where the Action Is! L.A. Nuggets 1965–1968. It is argued that the reissue process necessarily decodes a text’s past and recodes it for the present, fundamentally altering our understanding of our cultural history. Introduction Music reissues are taken-for-granted objects in our popular culture. Practically anyone who owns even a handful of records possesses at least a favorite artist’s “greatest hits” collection or an updated CD version of a cherished album. Yet, relatively little scholarship exists that examines how the resurrection of these “old” musical texts affects their meaning and value. That is, each time a recording is repackaged and rereleased, the original text is altered and its cultural status is reconstructed, sometimes a little but often a lot. Repackaged and re-released sound recordings have been cornerstones of the commercial recording industry since its advent in the early 20th century. -
