Songs of the Vietnam War Lyrics
The Limits of Power: The United States in Vietnam Name:______________________________________________ 2 Online Lesson Songs of the Vietnam War Lyrics Introduction: Throughout history, the strong feelings raised by the sacrifices, ideals, heartbreaks, and triumphs of war have often been expressed by poets and artists in songs. Songs that best cap- tured the strong feelings of Americans became very popular and lived on long after the details of the conflict were forgotten. Whether they expressed patriotism and national ideals such as inThe Star-Spangled Banner and The Battle Hymn of the Republic, sacrifice and heroism such as inWhen Johnny Comes Marching Home, or disappointment and loss such as All Quiet Along the Potomac Tonight, these songs have become part of the history. The Vietnam War was no exception. Below is a small selection of the many songs written by Americans, Vietnamese, and French about the Vietnam War. Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation By Tom Paxton (1965, folk) < http://youtu.be/JQqapCkf4Uc> I got a letter from L.B.J., it said, “This is your lucky day. It’s time to put your khaki trousers on. Though it may seem very queer, we’ve got no jobs to give you here, so we are sending you to Viet Nam” chorus And Lyndon Johnson told the nation, “Have no fear of escalation, I am trying ev’ryone to please. Though it isn’t really war, we’re sending fifty thousand more to help save Viet Nam from Viet Namese.” I jumped off the old troop ship, I sank in mud up to my hips, And cussed until the captain called me down, “never mind how hard it’s raining, Think of all the ground we’re gaining, just don’t take one step outside of town.” Every night the local gentry slip out past the sleeping sentry They go out to join the old V.C. -

Agency in the Afrofuturist Ontologies of Erykah Badu and Janelle Monáe
Open Cultural Studies 2018; 2: 330–340 Research Article Nathalie Aghoro* Agency in the Afrofuturist Ontologies of Erykah Badu and Janelle Monáe https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2018-0030 Received May 21, 2018; accepted September 26, 2018 Abstract: This article discusses the visual, textual, and musical aesthetics of selected concept albums (Vinyl/CD) by Afrofuturist musicians Erykah Badu and Janelle Monaé. It explores how the artists design alternate projections of world/subject relations through the development of artistic personas with speculative background narratives and the fictional emplacement of their music within alternate cultural imaginaries. It seeks to establish that both Erykah Badu and Janelle Monáe use the concept album as a platform to constitute their Afrofuturist artistic personas as fluid black female agents who are continuously in the process of becoming, evolving, and changing. They reinscribe instances of othering and exclusion by associating these with science fiction tropes of extraterrestrial, alien lives to express topical sociocultural criticism and promote social change in the context of contemporary U.S. American politics and black diasporic experience. Keywords: conceptual art, Afrofuturism, gender performance, black music, artistic persona We come in peace, but we mean business. (Janelle Monáe) In her Time’s up speech at the Grammys in January 2018, singer, songwriter, and actress Janelle Monáe sends out an assertive message from women to the music industry and the world in general. She repurposes the ambivalent first encounter trope “we come in peace” by turning it into a manifest for a present-day feminist movement. Merging futuristic, utopian ideas with contemporary political concerns pervades Monáe’s public appearances as much as it runs like a thread through her music. -

One cylinder rests against the fingernails of a loosely formed fist (cupped to act as a resonator) and is struck with the other cylinder. Castanets - Consists of two shell-shaped pieces of wood, the hollow sides of which are clapped together. They produce an indefinite pitch and are widely used in Spanish music especially to accompany dance. When used in an orchestra, they are often mounted on either side of a piece of wood that is held by the player and shaken. Sleigh bells - Small pellet bells mounted in rows on a piece of wood with a protruding handle. Tambourine - A shallow, single-headed frame drum with a wooden frame in which metal disks or jingles are set. It is most often held in one hand and struck with the other. The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories. -
