Sincerely, Chad Kassem Acoustic Sounds, Inc. CEO 1 Six years ago, almost to the day, we wrote this same story. The one about how we had moved – tripled in size. How we’d finally found our permanent home, our last stop. We had outgrown our 6,000-square-foot ware- house and had moved into 18,00 square feet – a space that at the time felt so massive we were sure we’d never need to move again. And so we wrote a story, and in it we said, “And so here we are with no expectations to 2 move again…We’re not going anywhere anytime soon.” Is six years soon? It sure feels like it. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Dark Webs Goth Subcultures in Cyberspace
Dark Webs Goth Subcultures in Cyberspace Jason Whittaker University College Falmouth The rapport between Goth subcultures and new technologies has often been a subject of fascination for those who are both part of that subculture and external observers. William Gibson, who provided much of the impetus for such intersec- tions via his contributions to cyberpunk, made the connection between technol- ogy and Gothic rather embarrassingly explicit in his 1986 novel, Count Zero. Less mortifying was the crossover that occurred in the late eighties and nineties between Goth and Industrial music, particularly via bands such as Nine Inch Nails or Frontline Assembly, exploiting a hardcore techno sound combined with a strongly Goth-influenced aesthetic.1 This connection between the Gothic and technoculture has contributed to the survival of a social grouping that Nick Mercer, in 21st Century Goth (2002), refers to as the most vibrant community online, and is also the subject of several studies by Paul Hodkinson in particular. This paper is not especially concerned with the Gothic per se, whether it can tell us something about the intrinsic nature of the web or vice versa, but more with the practice of a youth subculture that does indeed appear to be flourishing in cyberspace, particularly the phe- nomenon of net.Goths that has emerged in recent years. Claims that sites and newsgroups form virtual communities are, of course, not specific to Goths. With the emergence of the Internet into popular consciousness in the early to mid- nineteen-nineties following the invention of the World Wide Web, commenta- tors such as Howard Rheingold in The Virtual Community (1995) made grand claims for the potential of online or virtual communities.

  • The Truth About What Michael Jackson Had (And Didn't Have) in His Bedroom
Raven Woods, Contributor Raven Woods is an author, educator, pop culture journalist and author of Allforloveblog The Truth About What Michael Jackson Had (And Didn't Have) In His Bedroom This is all old news from a decade ago, and there is absolutely nothing in those reports that hasn't already had its day in court. HUFFPOST 07/08/2016 Updated Jul 14, 2016 Last week, as the world geared up to remember Michael Jackson on his seventh death anniversary, a deluge of negative publicity hit regarding allegations of "disturbing" child porn that was supposedly uncovered during the 2003 raid of Neverland, conducted prior to Jackson's 2004 indictment on charges of molesting a minor. The highly publicized trial in 2005 resulted in Jackson's acquittal on all fourteen counts. The problem is that the police documents in question and the list of items seized from Neverland are not "new" or "recently unearthed" documents, as some media outlets have mistakenly claimed in an effort to bolster salacious headlines. These were all items that were entered in court back in 2005 ― items that were well known to both the prosecution and defense and were presented before both Judge Melville and the jury. None of the items seized from Neverland fit the legal definition of child pornography, and in fact many of the items that are currently creating the most media hysteria were not pornographic at all. They were legal art books; a few of them containing some examples of adult erotica, but again, these were not titles that could be in any way deemed as pornographic or even obscene.

  • Album Covers Through Jazz
SantiagoAlbum LaRochelle Covers Through Jazz Album covers are an essential part to music as nowadays almost any project or single alike will be accompanied by album artwork or some form of artistic direction. This is the reality we live with in today’s digital age but in the age of vinyl this artwork held even more power as the consumer would not only own a physical copy of the music but a 12’’ x 12’’ print of the artwork as well. In the 40’s vinyl was sold in brown paper sleeves with the artists’ name printed in black type. The implementation of artwork on these vinyl encasings coincided with years of progress to be made in the genre as a whole, creating a marriage between the two mediums that is visible in the fact that many of the most acclaimed jazz albums are considered to have the greatest album covers visually as well. One is not responsible for the other but rather, they each amplify and highlight each other, both aspects playing a role in the artistic, musical, and historical success of the album. From Capitol Records’ first artistic director, Alex Steinweiss, and his predecessor S. Neil Fujita, to all artists to be recruited by Blue Note Records’ founder, Alfred Lion, these artists laid the groundwork for the role art plays in music today. Time Out Sadamitsu "S.
