Spring is just around the corner and I hope everyone is gearing up for the spring and summer shows coming your way. I have a few reminders for you. There will be Designated Specialties on July 7th. and 8th. at the Southeastern Iowa Kennel Club, Ottumwa, Iowa. The judges for those shows are Edmund Dziuk on Saturday and Sharol Candace Way on Sunday. If you can please come out and support these designated specialties. We also have our National Specialty at Purina Farms on Friday, September l4th. Judges will be: Ms. Karen Hynke who will judge Puppy & Veteran Sweepstakes, Jr. Showmanship, and 4-6 Puppy. Garry K. Newton will judge Regular & Non-regular classes. On Saturday, September 15th. we will have a Supported Entry with the Three Rivers Kennel Club; our Annual General Membership Meeting and Banquet, Auction and Awards Presentation. And then again on Sunday, September 16th. we will sponsor a Supported Entry with Three Rivers Kennel Club. This should be a fun-filled weekend so please don’t forget to mark your calendars.

Remember if you would like to sponsor a Supported Entry or Designated Specialty the application form is on our website. Just fill it out and return it to the Board for approval.

For those planning a trip to Portugal this year. Monografica will be held on Saturday, June 9th. For those that have never made the voyage to Portugal the trip is well worth it. This year for the second time there will be a Hunting Seminar held on Friday, June 8th. Location for this event has yet to be determined but from the pictures I have been privileged to see the countryside and amenities are absolutely beautiful. It has also been requested that we do a short seminar on “Why We Should DNA our Podengos”. This is an honor that both Margaret and I have gladly accepted. To be able to have the privilege of speaking to not only Portuguese breeders but breeders from all over the world regarding DNA tells me that this surely is a small world and that we can all come together for the benefit of our breed.

One last thing before I leave you all. The Board of Directors would like to congratulate our own Ton- da Curry for her election as District Attorney for Van Zandt County, Tx. CONGRATULATIONS Tonda, we wish you all the success in your new endeavor!

What a successful day we had at the piers for Meet The Breeds. February in New York isn’t always accommodating weather wise. However, despite some rain that day we had Un-February like weather. People took advantage of the unusual weather and came out by the thou- sands. Our booth was busy all day. Thousands of people came to the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno set up and were greeted by Snippet, Lisbon, Nina, Ira and Victor. Bud Hidlay, Marga- ret Boisture, Bruce Boisture, Sandy Gillen, Kim- berly Ragsdale, Miranda Waterman and Spencer Ramsdell talked to the visitors and explained our lively breed while the pups gave out kisses. This year our neighbor which was another Portuguese breed, Portuguese Pointers, won a placement in the booth decoration contest. However, the talk among our group was that we will step up our game. We have lots of ideas for the next Meet the Breeds. The photographs in our booth are gorgeous. Bruce and I donated, for the day, our official Portuguese hunting hats. The best part of the day was meeting the kids. Kids just love our breed. I met a few people with Portuguese heritage that knew of the breed however, most are meeting the breed for the first time.

We met lots of interesting people, explained our breed several thousand times, handed out lots of pamphlets, and generally had a great time. We hope others will consider volunteering for Meet The Breeds in their area, in NY next year or at the Royal Canin Event in December.

PPPA Health and Research Committee Report to the Club March 3, 2018

OFA Report for 2017

We have received the 4th Quarter and Year End OFA Reports which are posted on the Health Page of the PPPA Website: http://www.portuguesepodengopequeno.org/health.html

Some important items from the above are:

1. PPP’s Dysplastic Ranking is 171 out of 178 Breeds with more that 100 cases. This does not mean that we can stop testing HIPS! It is very important that we keep checking our breeding partners to avoid something creeping up on us

2. A very important static is in Red on the HIPS page. The percentage shown represents the number of cases where our owners check the box on the submittal form to post the results regardless of the condition of the HIP. In my conversation with OFA, they remarked that these number are far better than most breeds.

You will notice that we have added a button on the Health Page to the ACVO “Blue Book”, which is now available on the OFA site. There is an apparent discrepancy in the 3.13% Abnormal Eyes shown on the OFA Report and the roughly 78% Normal Globe in the Blue Book. This is due to two factors:

1. The ACVO contains results from testing done by a member Ophthalmologist; whether, or not it is turned in to OFA. We need to post all test results with OFA, so we have clear picture of our breed’s eye issues.

2. OFA counts “Breeder’s Option” as Normal where ACVO does not.

As you look at the Blue Book pages you can see why it is important to maintain the yearly eye test for all breeding partners. DNA testing for our two PRA mutations is not able to tell us anything about Cataracts, Glaucoma, Vitreous Degeneration. Etc.

For your convenience we have included a copy of the OFA Report and the Blue Book pages at the end of this report.

DNA Testing

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of what the results of DNA Testing will tell you and how to interrupt it. The test result will be one of the following:

“Normal/Clear” – No Mutation found “Carrier” - One Mutation was found “Affected/ At Risk” – Two Mutations found

One gene is randomly selected from each parent’s pair of genes and creates a new occurrence on each puppy. Two “Normal” parents will produce “Normal” puppies while two “Affected” parents will produce “Affected” puppies.

2018 Portuguese Podengo Pequeno National Specialty Host Hotel

Our National Specialty Show is on Friday Sept 14th and the Supported All Breed shows are on Saturday, Sept 15th & Sunday, Sept 16th, 2018

Budget Lodging is holding 30 rooms until August 1, 2018, after which any remaining rooms from the room block will be released for the general public. Reservations will be accepted in excess of the 30 held for the PPPA group should they be needed. Our annual dinner, awards presentation and auction will also be held at this location.

Microwaves, refrigerators, coffee makers, iron/ironing board, hairdryer and Wi-Fi are provided in all rooms. An acre of open grass and a fenced off-leash area is provided. Dogs are not to be in landscaped areas.

The room charge for PPPA members will be $89.44 - $99.44/night (plus 8.975% tax) depending on the room type selected.

There will be no pet fees for up to 4 pets per room, crated when staying 2 or more nights. 5 or 6 pets crated per room will incur a $10.00 per night fee (5/6 small dogs per room is maximum). A one night only stay with up to 4 pets will incur a $10.00 pet fee, a one night only stay with up to 5/6 pets will incur a $20.00 pet fee. * Please make sure you leave the room the way you found it and clean up after yourself and your dogs. We would like to use this hotel for future shows. *Charges will apply for damages.*

MUST reserve directly by calling 636-629-1000 and inform the hotel whether you are or you are not having a pet in the room, so that the hotel has maximum flexibility in assigning rooms.

DO NOT book through Priceline, Hotels.com or other travel agencies because the waiver of the pet fee cannot be honored and rooms will not count toward the clubs comp rooms. The standard pet fee of $25/day will apply to any rooms booked through a third party.
