Podengo Portugueso Official UKC Breed Standard Sighthound and Pariah Dog Group ©Copyright 1996, United Kennel Club The goals and purposes of this breed standard include: to furnish guidelines for breeders who wish to maintain the quality of their breed and to improve it; to advance this breed to a state of similarity throughout the world; and to act as a guide for judges. Breeders and judges have the responsibility to avoid any conditions or exaggerations that are detrimental to the health, welfare, essence and soundness of this breed, and must take the responsibility to see that these are not perpetuated. Any departure from the following should be considered a fault, and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog and on the dog’s ability to perform its traditional work. ● The MEDIO ('mee-dee-o' - medium or 'middle') was HISTORY developed for rabbit chasing, flushing, hunting and The probable origin of the Portuguese Podengo is from retrieval. Official Standard of the Portuguese Podengo History: a Primitive Type
Page 1 of 2 Official Standard of the Portuguese Podengo History: A primitive type dog, its probable origin lies in the ancient prick-eared dogs brought by the Phoenicians and Romans to the Iberian Peninsula in Classic Antiquity. This rustic breed adapted itself to the Portuguese geography and climate, resulting in what is nowadays the primary pack hunting dog in Portugal for large (boar/stag) and small (rabbit) game. The GRANDE, the largest of the Podengos, was developed for deer and wild boar hunting. It will exhaust and hold down the prey and await the hunter's gun. The Grande is now very rare in its home country. The MEDIO, or middle size, was developed for rabbit chasing, flushing, hunting and retrieval. Its hunting style includes catlike stalking and, similar to the Ibizan Hound, it often jumps above the prey before landing on or near it to flush it out of dense brush, rock crevices or burrows. It will dig if necessary, to flush prey. General Appearance: Well-proportioned muscled, sound with moderate bone. (Grande size heavier body and bone) Lean 4-sided pyramid shaped head with prick ears. Tail - sickle-shaped. Over emphasis on any one feature should be strongly avoided. The Medio and Grande come in two coat textures, smooth and wire. The Podengo is a hunting dog; scars from honorable wounds shall not be considered a fault. Size, Proportion, Substance: The proportions of the Grande and Medio are almost square. Strong in build, heavier bone present in larger size dogs. Body length from prosternum to point of buttocks is approximately 10 percent longer than the height at the withers. -

AKC Education Webinar Series: FSS/Miscellaneous Questions and Answers
AKC Education Webinar Series: FSS/Miscellaneous Questions and Answers 1. Can an FSS Parent Club offer an ATT Test? If the Parent Club is licensed to hold any event, it may offer an ATT Test. 2. For a domestically evolving breed that started with an independent registry for 20 years, then accepted into UKC for an additional 20 years, can these two be combined to qualify for the 40 years required to be considered into FSS, or must the 40 be done within the same registry body? The history of a breed having a registry for a minimum of 40 years can be merged as described, staff will review to determine if it would meet the parameters required. 3. Does AKC have reciprocity with UKC? AKC has open registration with individual breeds with that are registered by UKC. A breed requesting to be enrolled in the AKC FSS based upon UKC recognition would have reciprocity, if it meets the number of years being in existence, until the breed becomes AKC recognized. At which time the individual breeds may request to keep the studbook open for UKC registered dogs. 4. Is it a good practice to submit all of the required data to AKC in one PDF electronically to FSS as a final submission, once all criteria is met for the ease of processing? The FSS Department keeps track of required data, meeting minutes maybe a PDF, the other requirements need to be in different formats. Breed Standard needs to be a word document, membership list needs to be in an Excel as provided.
