54 DOG SHELTER VOLUNTEER IN CUSCO

The location of the dog shelter it is outside of Cusco city, around 25 minutes driving. It is a very small shelter staffed completely by volunteers.Have in mind that helping abandoned and abused dogs and cats is easy and not expensive

This could be the easiest thing you do today, for some people, their motivation main is compassion, imagining oneself in the place of a living creature that is trapped in a difficult life. For other people, their motivation is a matter of ethics: how does one justify treating animals this way?

Still others have personal reasons for offering kind- ness and resources to care for abused and homeless animals.Whatever your reason for becoming part of the solution to this worldwide problem, we are gra- teful that you share our goal to reduce the suffering of Cusco’s street animals. How you can help us

If you are in Cusco and you have some friends Vo- lunteer Your Time with us

Volunteers, a very important part of the Cusco Dog shelter project team, are much appreciated by the shelter’s dogs and unpaid staff. (Neither the shelter nor the project has paid staff.) As a volunteer you will: • Prepare meals for and feed the dogs. • Play with the dogs and walk them in the nearby forest. • Clean the animals’ playing and sleeping areas. • Help with shelter maintenance and construction. • Assist in animal care at a local veterinary clinic.

Wear old clothes and expect to get dirty—and to be greeted with much enthusiasm by the shelter animals. All volunteers are welcome, and we have particular need for those with skills in the areas of veterinary care, animal care, and light construction.

You can come for some hours to a full day, just let us know in advance and we can manage to fit you in our Daily schedule!

The cooperative project supported by CrossoverPeru is located in the upper part of the Sacred Valley, in the district of Chinchero, the has unique strengths in terms of skills and products, and also offer different pallays (designs in Quechua), according to how their weaving tradition evolved.

We consider that our visit to this Project is going to change the perspective of travel to the visitors and also make an impact in the Life if the local people as we are doing sustainable tourism as we are giving back. As they are traveling.

The Kintu de Ocutuan Association

The Kintu de Coca Ocutuan weaving cooperative is formed by 30 Quechua women and Men residing in the high Andean community of Ocutuan in Chinche- ro. Located at altitude of over 12 300 feet above sea level. Close to Piuray Lake in the Andes of Peru.

Life is Hard but good there is a lot to do in the far- ming lands around the community where the local People farm potatoes, Corn Favabeans, wheat, oat, and Barley.

The first view of the community is a moon-like, windswept valley dotted with a few mud-brick hou- ses. It is a harsh environment where temperatures fall below zero in the afternoons, and little food grows – largely only potatoes, sheep, and llamas. Even today, people here live a subsistence lifestyle, with little attention from the outside world. Whereas the majority of the cooperative members did not have the opportunity to study - the school closed in the 1990’s due to terrorism, only reopening in 2006 and being officially recognized in 2008 - all school- aged children are currently enrolled in school.

Activities:

• Welcome to visitors with typical dances from the área. • Potatoe and Tuber Workshop. • Activity of the day: Farming, cooking, harvesting, Bull plowing. • Complimentary activities: Walking to look outs around the community(Especially for those groups who will hike the Inca trail) • Taste Typical food from the community as a Included lunch for the visitor. • Weaving Textile Demonstration, one of the most important traditions in the Andes and we can see what is the workshop production at the com- munity.

Every Porter at CrossoverPeru Tours receives:

• Good and livable working wages. • Health insurance and full coverage of any medi- cal cost incurred on the hike. • Proper uniforms including waterproof jackets and boots. • Warm sleeping bags. • Access to the same first aid our clients receive. • A comfortable place to stay and sleep the night before and after their hike (at our Porters House) • Really good and nutritious food...the same meals we prepare for our hikers. • Support of their family with visits by medical pro- fessionals, donations of supplies like boots and health needs and a trip to Machu Picchu. Often their first visit is with us as our guest.

57 QEROS, ANDEAN SHAMANS

The Qeros Nation are known as the keepers, who inherited the ancient knowledge and at the same time they are one of the most highly respected mys- tics and spirituals in the southern and central Andes. They are Andean priests, healers, shamans, and simple farmers who are part of the very few Andean people of Peru that are still preserving the knowle- dge of the spiritual tradition of the Incas in a very pure form.

These amazing people do not have the access to a big hospital or a good education, have neither electricity nor treated drinkable water, which makes them see the world with different eyes appreciating the nature, which the only access to what they have, and nature provide them whatever they may need.

A man/woman from Qeros, inherited the great spiritual knowledge coming the ancestors and divine power from the heaven, which also make them spe- cial people, and we know them like Maestros (Mas- ters), who can guide our life to a good path.

As they are preserving all these ancient knowledge, nowadays they are doing an amazing work with the human beings in the areas where they can go and/ or travel, this work is based the incredible and ama- zing spiritual healings that can help in the personal life, improving and enhancing the appreciation for the life, environment and the human mates.

Cusquenian people, we are starting to revalue and retaking these sacred ceremonies, thanks because these amazing people from Qeros, who come to the city every August to perform the Offering to the Mo- ther Earth, because we believe that August the Mo- ther Earth is able to receive our gratitude. And this going to be a great opportunity to be in contact with the spiritual gods and ask all your desires, which is balance that human beings we need to keep.

According what I can learn from the Masters, every- body has the opportunity to be part of these cere- monies in order to find yourself and live in harmony.

57 OUR TRAVELLERS FREQUENT ASKED QUESTIONS

Reservations

We recommend booking 2-3 months prior to ensure availability. If your da- tes are flexible we can take reservations on short notice, however our hi- kes tend to book out as we keep our group sizes very small. In order to book we send out an invoice for deposit via PayPal, and your final pay- ment will be due in cash upon arrival to Cusco. (Other options available.)

Altitude

Our Hikes and Tours take place anywhere from 8,000 feet up to 17,000 feet. It is essential to spend 2-3 days minimum in Cusco or similar elevation prior to taking any hike with us. We recommend staying well hydrated while you are in elevation and to get plenty of rest prior to your Hike. CrossoverPeru is not responsible if you get altitude sickness. Please ask your doctor is you are concerned with the altitude.

Weather

Weather in the Peruvian Andes can be unpredictable ranging from hot and sunny to rain, wind, cold and sometime snow. Hikers should be prepared with proper gear and be ready for variable weather conditions throughout the day. Sma- ll changes in the itinerary are a possibility as well as trip cancellations due to bad weather. We reserve the right to cancel a trip prior to leaving Cusco if we feel conditions are unsafe. If this happens you will be refunded your deposit in full (see full Terms & Conditions), or have the opportunity to reschedule, however trips still go out when there is rain, snow or fog. Temperatures can range from 35° F degrees in the morning to 50°F degrees in the afternoon. The sun does get intense in the afternoon and we highly recommend bringing sun protection.

Tipping

Our guides and staff are paid on a per trip basis based on the number of days they spend on the trail. While tipping is not required, it is a com- mon practice in Latin America. If you feel your guide, and crew went abo- ve and beyond to make your trip special gratuity is greatly appreciated.

Departures

Our hikes depart everyday upon request with a minimum of 2 guests (Solo travelers can be matched up with existing groups)

Food

We take pride in preparing a wonderful variety of food throughout your hike. You will always be served local Peruvian style dishes in a family style manner and you will never go hungry. We can cater to any dietary needs, but ask that you notify us of your request at the time of booking. If we are not informed du- ring your booking we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate.

First Aid

Hiking in the Andes and in high altitude can be dangerous and be- cause of this our staff always carries a proper first aid kit along with emergency oxygen for our guests to use if they are feeling ill.

Accomodation

All accomodation on multi-day hikes is tent camping. We bring qua- lity 4 person tents but sleep a maximum of 2 persons to each tent.

Group Sizes

Our hikes depart every day with a minimum of 2 guests and a maxi- mum of 7 guests for multi day hikes and 8 guests for our day trip (pri- vate trips and large group trips available upon request at the time of booking). Group pricing is available if your group is 4 or more people.

Insurance

Travel protection is essential for your peace of mind and safety throughout the trip. Unexpected medical emergencies or illnesses prior to or during your trip could make you lose pre-paid, non-refundable payments. Emergency medical transport and air ambulances in remote locations can be extremely expensive and will pro- bably not be covered by your medical health plan so it is compulsory that you purchase personal adequate travel insurance which is appropriate for your trip. This insurance must cover personal accident, medical expenses, air ambulance, loss of effects, repatriation costs and all other expenses which may arise as a re- sult of loss, damage, injury, delay or inconvenience during your trip. We also sug- gest you purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance. When obtaining travel insurance, you must inform the insurer of the type of travel to be undertaken, es- pecially when “adventure activities” are included in your trip. There are several in- surance companies offering travel protection plans available for purchase online. View of Rainbow Mountain
