WORLD VEG FESTIVAL 2010 Sponsored by The San Francisco Vegetarian Society By Dixie Mahy, President of SFVS & Coordinator for WVF The 11th annual WORLD VEG FESTIVAL October 2 & 3, 2010 presented in the San Francisco County Fair Building, in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco was another great success with around 6,500 attendees over the two-day weekend. We continue to present the most exciting festival in the Bay Area and perhaps California. The purpose of the event is to celebrate and to educate. We celebrated with entertainment and we educated with 24 speakers & 1 yoga teacher, 12 demo presenters (raw & cooked), 8 food booths, 32 exhibitors, 17 non-profits, and 3 speakers’ tables! Our celebration included a Children’s Corner; Vegan Speed Dating moderated by Kristen Miles; a fun Vegan Fashion Show presented by Karine Brighten Events; a Teen Forum moderated by Nora Kramer; Music, Dancing, & Acrobatics in the Gallery; and a gala dinner Saturday evening with Raw or Cooked vegan choices. Organizing Committee & Volunteers This fabulous event could not have occurred without the Organizing Committee preparing, publicizing, and presenting the event. Many volunteer hours were given by our dedicated committee which included: Officers: Dixie Mahy, SFVS President & WVF Coordinator; JC, SFVS Treasurer & WVF Exhibitor & Printed Program Coordinator, Nancy Loewen, SFVS Vice President, Janet Tom SFVS Secretary, and Board Members who were on the committee: Sharon Leong, Joyce Thornton, Tom Flynn, and Vasu Marti. OFFICE OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ANNUAL REPORT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2017-2018 I. VISION / MISSION STATEMENT Vision Supporting a strong economy within a healthy island and community. Mission The Office of Economic Development (OED) works in partnership with the community to create economic opportunities towards the development of a healthy, stable and balanced economy of the County of Kauai. II. DEPARTMENT GOALS The Office of Economic Development strives to support current businesses and diversify Kauai’s economy by providing opportunities for development of new businesses. OED’s goals will be achieved with collaboration of business, government and community sectors. The objectives of this office are: 1. Assist businesses of all sizes, emerging industries and organizations in providing technical and financial support, as feasible, in an effort to provide full employment for all of Kauai’s residents. 2. Utilize the Guiding Principles of the Kauai Economic Development Plan – Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) to help improve Kauai’s economy over the next 10 years: • Economic Diversification: To strengthen selected industry clusters to minimize dependence on a single industry • Economic Self-Sufficiency: To minimize imports and promote import substitution • Economic Opportunity for all: To offer an appropriate K-20 education and adequate training opportunities to give workers choices and to promote living wages 1 III. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION OED, as a government entity, interfaces with business and community leaders, as well as other government agencies and programs, to enhance Kauai’s economic development opportunities. OED is responsible for providing technical and financial support, as feasible, to businesses of all sizes and emerging industries, in an effort to provide full employment for all of Kauai’s residents. -

The most common are; to protect the environment, to protect the health of their family and to protect animals. Vegan History
Vegan History Veganism has origins that date back to ancient India and Mediterranean societies. Vegetarianism is known to be mentioned by the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras around 500 BC.(1) Veganism can be traced to the Indus Valley Civilization in 3300-1300, particular to northern and western ancient India. An early known vegan was the Arab poet al-Ma’arri, 973-1057 AD. He based his view on equal justice not only for humans, yet for animals as well. His philosophy was based in health, the transmigration of souls, and animal welfare. (2) In the 19th century vegetarianism became a significant movement in UK and USA, with a minority of vegetarians avoiding all animal foods. In the early 1800’s poet Percy Bysshe published “A Vindication of Natural Diet” and a London doctor, William Lambe said “water and vegetable diet could cure cure anything from tuberculosis to acne.” (3) Around 1830 many vegan communities were established. The Temple School opened in 1834 in Massachusetts in the USA, and Fruitlands in 1844. 1838, in England James Pierrepont Greaves founded the vegan community the Concordium at Alcott House. Then in 1843 members from the Alcott House formed the Vegetarian Society in UK. In this time vegetarians opposed veganism, calling it impractical and thought it may oppose their vegetarian crusade. In 1944 when The Vegetarian Society didn’t support the emerging Vegan movement, Donald Watson started his own publication called The Vegan News, and coined the word vegan. The publication inspired others to give up dairy, such as George Bernard Shaw. November 1st is World Vegan Day, which also marks the founding of The Vegan Society in UK. -

DISSERTATION PROFESSIONALIZATION, FACTIONALISM, AND SOCIAL MOVEMENT SUCCESS: A CASE STUDY ON NONHUMAN ANIMAL RIGHTS MOBILIZATION Submitted by Corey Lee Wrenn Department of Sociology In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Spring 2016 Doctoral Committee: Advisor: Michael Carolan Lynn Hempel Michael Lacy Marcela Velasco Copyright by Corey Lee Wrenn 2016 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT PROFESSIONALIZATION, FACTIONALISM, AND SOCIAL MOVEMENT SUCCESS: A CASE STUDY ON NONHUMAN ANIMAL RIGHTS MOBILIZATION This project explores the intra-movement interactions between professionalized and radical factions in the social movement arena using a content analysis of movement literature produced by the Nonhuman Animal rights movement between 1980 and 2013. Professionalized factions with greater symbolic capital are positioned to monopolize claimsmaking, disempower competing factions, and replicate their privilege and legitimacy. Radical factions, argued to be important variables in a movement’s health, are thus marginalized, potentially to the detriment of movement success and the constituency for whom they advocate. Specifically, this study explores the role of professionalization in manipulating the tactics and goals of social movement organizations and how the impacts of professionalization may be aggravating factional boundaries. Boundary maintenance may prevent critical discourse within the movement, and it may also provoke the “mining” of radical claimsmaking for symbols that have begun to resonate within the movement and the public. Analysis demonstrates a number of important consequences to professionalization that appear to influence the direction of factional disputes, and ultimately, the shape of the movement. Results indicate some degree of factional fluidity, but professionalization does appear to be a dominant force on movement trajectories by concentrating power in the social change space.
