DISSERTATION PROFESSIONALIZATION, FACTIONALISM, AND SOCIAL MOVEMENT SUCCESS: A CASE STUDY ON NONHUMAN ANIMAL RIGHTS MOBILIZATION Submitted by Corey Lee Wrenn Department of Sociology In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Spring 2016 Doctoral Committee: Advisor: Michael Carolan Lynn Hempel Michael Lacy Marcela Velasco Copyright by Corey Lee Wrenn 2016 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT PROFESSIONALIZATION, FACTIONALISM, AND SOCIAL MOVEMENT SUCCESS: A CASE STUDY ON NONHUMAN ANIMAL RIGHTS MOBILIZATION This project explores the intra-movement interactions between professionalized and radical factions in the social movement arena using a content analysis of movement literature produced by the Nonhuman Animal rights movement between 1980 and 2013. Professionalized factions with greater symbolic capital are positioned to monopolize claimsmaking, disempower competing factions, and replicate their privilege and legitimacy. Radical factions, argued to be important variables in a movement’s health, are thus marginalized, potentially to the detriment of movement success and the constituency for whom they advocate. Specifically, this study explores the role of professionalization in manipulating the tactics and goals of social movement organizations and how the impacts of professionalization may be aggravating factional boundaries. Boundary maintenance may prevent critical discourse within the movement, and it may also provoke the “mining” of radical claimsmaking for symbols that have begun to resonate within the movement and the public. Analysis demonstrates a number of important consequences to professionalization that appear to influence the direction of factional disputes, and ultimately, the shape of the movement. Results indicate some degree of factional fluidity, but professionalization does appear to be a dominant force on movement trajectories by concentrating power in the social change space.

FROM Veganism: A Truth Whose Time Has Come http://thevegantruth.blogspot.com August 2015 I'M A VEGAN Essay Collection ~ vegan diversity The following selected essay winners that comprise the I'm a vegan collection were the result of an online essay contest, and some were contributed for the book that will follow. The essays reveal that there are religious vegans and those vehemently anti-theist. This compilation exemplifies that vegans are Protestant and Pagan, Abolitionist and Anarchist, African and Asian-American, World-Record-Breaking vegan athlete and self proclaimed 'vegan-fattie', in-your-face activist and introvert, anti-natalist and mothers, punks and professionals, who come in all ages, races, and nationalities. However, there is a golden thread that binds them (and all vegans together). They have stopped their demand and support of animal exploitation, as far as possible. I'm a vegan lifer. ~ Coby Siegenthaler, Northridge, CA. ~ 90 years old When I was born in the Netherlands 90 years ago, my parents raised me vegetarian since birth. When I was in nursing school, I met an engineering student at a vegetarian club meeting. He too was raised vegetarian. We fell in love at first site. Together we took our love for animals to the next level and took our vegetarianism to the next level and became vegan. We got married, moved to the United States, and had two wonderful children. We began having vegan potlucks at our house every month for many years. In those days, the entire L.A. vegan community could fit in our living room.

  • A History of Veganism from 1806
1 World Veganism – past, present, and future By John Davis, former IVU Manager and Historian A collection of blogs © John Davis 2010-12 Introduction This PDF e-book is about 8mb, 219 pages A4, (equivalent to 438 page paperback book), so I strongly recommend that you save a copy to your own disk, then open it in the Adobe Acrobat Reader. That way, you won’t have to download it all again if you want to read more of it sometime later. Creating this as a PDF e-book has several advantages, especially if you are reading this on a device connected to the internet. For example: - in the blog about interviews on SMTV, just click on the links to watch the videos - in the bibliography click to read a complete scan of an original very old book. - on the contents page click a link to go direct to any item, then click ‘back to top’. - you can also, of course, use other features such as search, zoom etc. etc. - a great advance on printed books… It should work on any device, though an ipad/tablet is ideal for this as there are lots of big colour photos, or on smart-phones try rotating for best results, on a larger computer monitor try view/page display/two up, to read it like a book. The blogs were posted weekly from February 2010 to December 2012 and each is self- contained, with the assumption that readers might not have seen any of the others. So feel free to start anywhere, and read them in any order, no need to read from the beginning.
