Tickets are $25, with student tickets at $5, and can be purchased online at www.hostoscenter.org or by calling (718)-518-4455. The box office is open Monday to Friday, 1 PM to 4 PM and will be open two hours prior to performance. Born in 1978 in Havana, Lena Burke is a pianist, singer and songwriter and is the daughter of Malena Burke, and granddaughter of the late Elena Burke -- heralded Cuban singers known for their Boleros.Burke’s first songs were written at age three, followed by guitar classes at age five by her father (Rey Nerio), and classical piano at age seven. After 12 years of studio recording, Burke became a concert pianist, winning several prizes. At this point her voice was discovered. Burke started her musical career singing backing vocals on albums by Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Thalía, Jaci Velasquez, Chayanne and Alejandro Sanz, The latter introduced Burke to executives at his recording label, WEA Latina, who signed her. -

Revista Transcultural de Música Transcultural Music Review #9 (2005) ISSN:1697-0101 “Somos Cubanos!“ – timba cubana and the construction of national identity in Cuban popular music Patrick Froelicher Abstract The complex processes that led to the emergence of salsa as an expression of a “Latin” identity for Spanish-speaking people in New York City constitute the background before which the Cuban timba discourse has to be seen. Timba, I argue, is the consequent continuation of the Cuban “anti-salsa-discourse” from the 1980s, which regarded salsa basically as a commercial label for Cuban music played by non-Cuban musicians. I interpret timba as an attempt by Cuban musicians to distinguish themselves from the international Salsa scene. This distinction is aspired by regular references to the contemporary changes in Cuban society after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Thus, the timba is a “child” of the socialist Cuban music landscape as well as a product of the rapidly changing Cuban society of the 1990s. -

Along with his performances as a leader with his band AfroMantra, Alex has shared the stage with important bands and artists in the New York’s Latin-Jazz Scene. In the 1940s and 50s Rodríguez reorganized the son conjunto (‘son group’) and developed the son montuno, the basic template of modern-day salsa. He claimed to be the true creator of the mambo and was an important as well as a prolific composer who wrote nearly two hundred song lyrics.Early lifeRodríguez was born in Güira de Macurije in Bolondrón, Matanzas Province as the third of fifteen children, fourteen boys and one girl.As a young child, Rodríguez was blinded when a horse (or a mule) kicked him in the head.Rise to FameLater, Rodríguez became a musician, and eventually became one of the most renowned bandleaders on the island earning him the nickname El Ciego Maravilloso (the Marvellous Blind Man). His music emphasized Afro-Cuban rhythm as well as the melodic lead of the tres, which he played. In 1936 he played his own compositions with the Sexteto Boston, led by his cousin Jacinto Scull. The group disbanded in 1937, and he joined the Septeto Bellamar of cornetist José Interián in 1938. -

El cine en español en los Estados Unidos Roberto Fandiño y Joaquín Badajoz Siglo XX: los hispanos Roberto Fandiño Introducción Como parte de un continente en el que la mayoría de los países son de habla española, era de esperar que, apenas surgido el cine sonoro en los Estados Unidos, nuestro idioma hicie- ra sentir en él su presencia. Se empezó por frases ocasionalmente pronunciadas en el con- texto del idioma inglés cuando una situación lo requería. Hallar esos momentos obligaría a rastrear entre películas parcial o enteramente desaparecidas o conservadas en precarias condiciones; un material que corresponde al período experimental —entre 1926 y 1929—, cuando la industria, en posesión de una técnica viable y segura, decide cambiar todas las estructuras y hacer que las películas se realicen y se proyecten con un sonido sincrónico que reproduce los sonidos ambientales y, sobre todo, las voces de los artistas que nos ha- blan desde la pantalla. Sabemos que desde sus inicios, además de las frases ocasionales incluidas con un sentido realista en películas habladas en inglés, se hicieron cortos musicales en los que, por su im- portancia, no podían faltar las canciones en nuestro idioma. Poco tiempo después, por ne- cesidades primordialmente comerciales, se llegó a las películas íntegramente habladas en español. Entre las sorpresas desagradables que trajo el sonoro a la industria estadounidense se hallaba la posibilidad de perder el mercado de los países donde no se hablaba inglés, que hasta ese momento habían podido disfrutar sin barreras de un arte basado en la univer- salidad de la imagen y en unos rótulos, fáciles de traducir a otros idiomas, que especifica- ban los diálogos o aclaraban situaciones. -
