Tickets are $25, with student tickets at $5, and can be purchased online at www.hostoscenter.org or by calling (718)-518-4455. The box office is open Monday to Friday, 1 PM to 4 PM and will be open two hours prior to performance. Born in 1978 in Havana, Lena Burke is a pianist, singer and songwriter and is the daughter of Malena Burke, and granddaughter of the late Elena Burke -- heralded Cuban singers known for their Boleros.Burke’s first songs were written at age three, followed by guitar classes at age five by her father (Rey Nerio), and classical piano at age seven. After 12 years of studio recording, Burke became a concert pianist, winning several prizes. At this point her voice was discovered. Burke started her musical career singing backing vocals on albums by Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Thalía, Jaci Velasquez, Chayanne and Alejandro Sanz, The latter introduced Burke to executives at his recording label, WEA Latina, who signed her. -

Karizma biog He’s one of the most in-demand DJs on the worldwide house circuit, his productions are a must-check for any self-respecting house lover, and his remix talents are sought out by some of the biggest names in the music business. Truly Karizma is a man at the very peak of his game. But then he’s been doing this for a while. Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1970, Chris Clayton became fascinated by music from an early age. “My grandma used to go to flea markets and come back with all these records, and I was just OBSESSED with them!” he recalls, laughing. “This was when I was about five years old. I’d sit listening to all these records for hours on end, and while I was listening I’d be studying the liner notes and the sleeves. By the time I was seven, you could pick up any record in our house and I could tell you who played on it, who produced it and using what equipment!” It was only natural that a desire to get involved with music would follow, and young Chris spent his teens learning to DJ – at that time playing hip-hop and the nascent ‘Baltimore club music’, a sub-genre that’s today similar in style to Detroit ghetto tech/Miami bass but which in its early days drew much inspiration from the go-go music coming out of nearby Philadelphia – and playing in a succession of bands. By the age of 19, he was playing with his first “proper” band, a Baltimore club music outfit called Unruly. -

From a Young Age Sabrina Carpenter Already Had a Clear Command on What She Intended to Do with Her Life: She Wanted to Sing
From a young age Sabrina Carpenter already had a clear command on what she intended to do with her life: she wanted to sing. “We have video of me in my kitchen. I was so young and was singing ‘God Bless America’,” the effervescent Carpenter recalls. She was too little to even pronounce all the words correctly, but she knew the performance felt right. “I know a lot of people don’t know what they want to do when they’re that young,” she says in a grand understatement, “but I had a pretty good idea and my heart was pretty much set on it.” In the years since, Carpenter, 15, has never wavered in her desire and ambition. While her talents have expanded into acting— she plays the rebellious Maya Hart on Disney Channel’s “Girl Meets World” and is starring in the upcoming Disney Channel original movie “Adventures in Babysitting” — music remains her first love. Her passion is evident on her full-length album debut, Eyes Wide Open. The Hollywood Records release is an upbeat collection of uplifting, infectious, well-crafted pop songs, many of them co-written by Carpenter, and all delivered in her expressive, appealing soprano. Because of her TV shooting schedule and other commitments, the album developed over a long and creative arch during which time Sabrina was able to nurture her artistic and musical point of view. “I learned a lot about what I like and more about myself and my capabilities,” she says. “And what I’m able to do with my voice.” Songwriting also took her on a path of discovery. -

Brian Malouf – Producer/Mixer/Engineer Brian pursued a career in music with unwavering passion from a young age. A first chair symphonic percussionist by the end of his university days, and later drumming for noted L.A. based rock and roll band Giant City. In 1983, his career as a world-class studio talent was jump-started when Michael Jackson tapped Brian to begin work with him on the album BAD, an experience that proved nothing short of life- changing, working closely with the most famous musician on earth and also witnessing the interactions between Michael and his producer, the legendary Quincy Jones. By 1989, Brian had risen to the top of his field as a mix engineer and producer. Working independently for every major label and amassing an impressive string of hit albums, singles and soundtracks for artists such as Madonna, Roxy Music, Prince, Seal, Pearl Jam, Tokio Hotel, Wolfmother and All Time Low. Revista Transcultural de Música Transcultural Music Review #9 (2005) ISSN:1697-0101 “Somos Cubanos!“ – timba cubana and the construction of national identity in Cuban popular music Patrick Froelicher Abstract The complex processes that led to the emergence of salsa as an expression of a “Latin” identity for Spanish-speaking people in New York City constitute the background before which the Cuban timba discourse has to be seen. Timba, I argue, is the consequent continuation of the Cuban “anti-salsa-discourse” from the 1980s, which regarded salsa basically as a commercial label for Cuban music played by non-Cuban musicians. I interpret timba as an attempt by Cuban musicians to distinguish themselves from the international Salsa scene. This distinction is aspired by regular references to the contemporary changes in Cuban society after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Thus, the timba is a “child” of the socialist Cuban music landscape as well as a product of the rapidly changing Cuban society of the 1990s.
