  • Zola.’ (AP) Song of the Summer
ARAB TIMES, THURSDAY, JULY 1, 2021 NEWS/FEATURES 13 People & Places Music Dacus sings young love Cat album falters at fi rst but ends strong By Mark Kennedy ot to be totally catty, but Doja Cat’s third album Nstarts poorly. The first four songs — “Woman,” “Naked,” “Payday” with Young Thug and “Get Into It (Yuh)” — are half-baked tunes mimicking beats and vocals from Nicki Minaj or Rihanna. None are note- worthy. It’s depressing. What happened to the artist behind 2019s “Hot Pink,” a sonic breath of fresh air? What happened to the Doja Cat whose electric performance of “Say So” at the Grammys was reminiscent of Missy Elliott’s futurism? Just wait. The fi fth song, “Need to Know,” is a superb, steamy sex tape of a song (with Dr. Luke co-writing and producing) and the sixth, “I Don’t Do Drugs” featuring Ariana Grande, is airy and confi dent with heav- enly harmonies. “Love to Dream” follows, a slice of dreamy pop, and then The Weeknd stops by on a terrifi c, slow-burning “You Right.” Cat The Cat is back. From then on, the 14-track “Planet Her” rights itself with whispery pop songs and the envelope-pushing “Options” with JID, climaxing with the awesome “Kiss Me More,” the previously released single with SZA that has a Gwen Stefani-ish refrain and must be considered a strong contender for This image released by A24 shows Riley Keough, (left), and Taylour Paige in a scene from ‘Zola.’ (AP) song of the summer. Despite the weak start, Doja Cat fulfi lls her promise on “Planet Her,” with an exciting, unpredictable style and a vocal ability that can switch from buttery sweet- Film ness to cutting raps.

Beneath the ground, the wooden casket I am trapped in is being lowered deeper and deeper into the cold, dark earth. Fear overtakes me as I fall into a paralytic state. I can hear the dirt being shoveled over me. My heart pounds through my chest. I can’t scream, and if I could, who would hear me? Just as the final shovel of soil is being packed tightly over me, I convulse out of my nightmare into the sweat- and urine-soaked bed in the small apartment on the island of Manhattan that my family calls home. Shaken and disoriented, I make my way out of the tiny back bedroom into the pitch-dark living room, where my mother and father sleep on a convertible couch. I stand at the foot of their bed just staring … waiting.

  • MUSIC REVIEW Timberland: a Boot & Phenomenon Jennifer Pride F0XYG1 [email protected] Staff Writer
Page 7 The Compass March 2 , 2004 LIFESTYLE MUSIC REVIEW Timberland: A boot & phenomenon Jennifer Pride F0XYG1 [email protected] Staff Writer What is America's fascination with and desire for Timberland boots? Almost everyone can say that they have at least one pair of Timber- lands, or Tims as they are known, in their closet, and if not, they know someone who does. The $1.1 billion footwear, apparel and accessories company has been a phenomenon in our culture since the early 1980’s, but the question everyone wants to know is, why has the Timberland boot re mained so popular, when so many other styles have come and gone? “Kids are our main customers; when they pick a style they like, it is an instant fad,” said Lenora Allen, manager of Sound Feet Shoes here in Elizabeth City. At Sound Feet Shoes, the boot’s popularity is evident in the massive display areas in the men’s, women’s, and children’s depart ments that are dedicated to Timberland boots. In January alone, Allen’s store sold over 160 pair of Timberland boots, of the more than 50 styles available there. Elizabeth City, being a college town has a great demand for these boots, which are mar keted to people between the ages of 16 and 35. Timberland is owned by Sidney Swartz, who inherited the com pany from his grandfather Nathan Swartz, who in 1918 bought out an Rocking old school other shoe company to become one of the leading boot manufactur Toby Tate ers. However, it wasn’t until the 1960’s, when the company helped change [email protected] shoe technology by introducing injection-molding technology to the foot Staff Writer wear industry, that Timberland had made a permanent impression on the boot industry.
