GENERAL INTRODUCTION SECTION A PROGRAMMES & POSTERS 1952-2001

PROVENANCE This section contains programmes, brochures, posters and other publicity material relating to a wide

range of judo events. Local, regional, national and international competitions and tournaments are all Mrs Marion Woodard donated the collection to the Library in two parts in April 2014 and September represented. Some of the programmes and posters for competitive events have been annotated to 2015. record the names of competitors and the outcomes of matches. Many of them have been signed by

eminent judoka.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION Men’s, women’s and junior, team and individual events are all covered, but the main emphasis is on

women’s judo. The collection was assembled over several decades by husband and wife, Graham and Marion

Woodard, both active members of the UK judo community. In 1982 6th dan Marion Woodard became The presentation is chronological. the first British female judo referee to receive a continental licence. She went on to obtain an international licence in 1990. During a long career as a judo referee, she officiated at over 50 tournaments and competitions in 24 countries, as well as five world and sixteen European championships. She also served as a member of the British Refereeing Commission of the European 1952 Judo Union (1995-1996). Between 1978 and 1984 Marion Woodard was Assistant Team Manager to the GB women’s judo squad. A.1 Programme, Budokwai 35th Annual Display, Royal Albert Hall, London, UK, 5 May 1952.

Together the Woodards built a substantial collection of judo-related posters, programmes and publications. Their judo-related journals, including runs of titles such as Judo Bulletin and British Judo, A.2 Programme, International Judo Matches, Royal have been added to the Library’s larger collection of judo books and publications donated by Richard Albert Hall, London, UK, 5 December 1952. Bowen. The material presented here comprises mainly posters and programmes covering almost 50 years of women’s judo at national and international level. It documents the development and growth of competitive judo for women, recording the organisation and promotion of major judo events, the 1953 achievements of individual judoka, and the communication of an evolving sport to a worldwide audience.

This sub-section contains early editions of the London Area Women’s Newsletter. The Newsletter was one of the first UK judo-related publications to be produced by and for women judoka. It was designed to circulate news and strengthen links within the judo community, both in and outside the London B.12-B.34 MISCELLANEOUS PUBLICATIONS & REPORTS 1961-2001 area.

Graham and Marion Woodward worked on the Newsletter’s editorial staff from its inception. This sub-section contains a small selection of miscellaneous publications, articles and reports relating to judo events and well-known judoka.
