Whether the Belgians will be able to celebrate winning gold medal Athens, 2004. number 43 remains to be seen, but that is not Belgium’s core business: Bel- gium has the distinction of being the only country to have provided two presi- dents of the International Olympic Committee. The Netherlands initially did better in the IOC membership competition, too. Baron Fritz van Tuijll van Serooskerken was the first IOC representative from the Low Countries, though he was not a member right from the start; this Dutch nobleman joined the International Olympic Committee in 1898, two years after its formation, to become the first Dutch IOC member. Baron Van Tuijll is still a great name in Dutch sporting history; in 1912 he founded a Dutch branch of the Olympic Movement and became its first president. However, it was not long before Belgium caught up. There were no Belgians among the 13 men – even today, women members are still few and far between – who made up the first International Olympic Committee in 1894, but thanks to the efforts of Count Henri de Baillet-Latour, who joined the IOC in 1903, the Olympic Movement became the key international point of reference for sport in the Catholic south. The Belgian Olympic Committee was formed three years later – a year af- ter Belgium, thanks to the efforts of King Leopold II, had played host to the prestigious Olympic Congress.

Twentieth Century Travels: Tales of a Canadian Judoka Michelle Marrian Anna Rogers B.A., University of British Columbia, 2000 A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the Department of Anthropology O Michelle Marrian Anna Rogers, 2005 University of Victoria All rights reserved. This thesis may not be reproduced in whole or in part, by photocopy or other means, without the permissions of the author ABSTRACT Supervisor: Dr. Andrea Walsh In 1960, Doug Rogers, my father, travelled to Japan to study the martial art of judo. In Japan, Rogers was able to hone his abilities in judo, which enabled him to succeed in competition at both the national and international level. Using photographs belonging to Rogers that were taken during the time he went to Japan (1960-1965), I was able to enter into a series of conversations with him about his reasons for travelling to Japan and his experiences during his stay there. Rogers' early life provides an opportunity to not only explore the unique experiences of an important individual in Canadian and Japanese sports history, but a chance to investigate specific examples of how large-scale, 'global' processes (the circulation of media, culture 'flows', and historical processes and events) can influence at the level of the individual. I examine how Rogers' original decision to travel to 'traditional' and 'exotic' Japan, and his actual stay in Japan, were contingent upon a revised cultural heritage that Japan was trying to project after the Second World War, which displayed Japan as a peaceful, proper, ethnically homogenous, and aesthetically-oriented nation.

It is always a pleasure and a great opportunity to attend clinics given by Shepherd Sensei, who is a student of the Kodokan and also Ms. Keiko Fukuda, 9th Dan, one of Dr. Kano’s original students. The series of three Kata clinics were scheduled by Eva McCatty, PSJA Kata Chair, assisted by Bruce Knight, PSJA VP of Development. The clinics offered this year were Kodokan Goshin Jutsu, Nage‐no‐kata and Kime‐no‐kata. Twelve Judo Dojos participated. There were 61 judoka who came from all over San Diego and some traveled from Los Angeles to attend. In addition there were numerous spectators. The first Kata clinic had Sensei Shepherd leading 17 judoka in Kodokan Goshin Jutsu, Self Defense Techniques. Goshin Jutsu was developed in 1956 to defend against danger from others. Participants learned to defend against unarmed attacks such as being held or preventing striking from a distance and defending against armed attacks from someone using a knife, stick or a gun. Afterward a very informative clinic, San Shi Dojo sponsored a wonderful dinner and club members, Mrs. Matsubara and Bill Caldwell, made delicious curry for everyone to share. 1 Photo courtesy of Eva McCatty Kodokan Goshin Jutsu hosted by San Shi Judo Dojo, Head Instructor Ernie Matsubara, 5th Dan The 2nd Kata clinic was Nage‐No‐Kata, Forms of Throwing.
