ENGLISH^ AND R. M. GROGAN^ Mattoon and Urbana, Illinois ABSTRACT The Omaha pool was discovered in November, 1940, by the Carter Oil Company's York No. I, SE. i, SE. i, SW. I of Sec. 33, T. 7 S., R. 8 E., Gallatin County, Illinois. The producing area is now defined and extends o\ er 450 acres located generally southwest of the discovery well. Production is from the Paksline and Tar Springs formations of the Chester (Upper Mississippian) series. The pool is on the crest of a large dome and is exceptional in that igneous rock is found in intrusive contact with the prodrcing sands. Sills and dikes ranging from less than one foot to 50 feet in thickness, composed of mica-peridotite, occur at many levels in the Pennsylvanian and Chester series. Contact effects indicate that some oil was in the sands before intrusion of the igneous mate- rial, suggesting a certain amount of prior uplift. The pronounced doming of the structure and the intrusion of dikes and sills may have accompanied intrusion of a hypothetical subjacent laccolithic or stock like igneous body, probably in post-Pennsylvanian-pre-Cretaceous time. Minor folding occurred earUer at the close of the Mississippian period. INTRODUCTION The Omaha pool is located in northwestern Gallatin County which is in south- eastern Illinois (Fig. i). This field is one of the few localities in the state where igneous rock has been encountered while drilling for oil, and it is the only field where the producing sands are found in contact with igneous rock. The first well drilled on the Omaha structure was the Kingwood's Robin- in son No. I, NE. i, NW. i, NW. i of Sec. 4, T. 8 S., R. 8 E., and was located what is now the northwest corner of the field. This well, completed as a dry hole in February, 1940, found poorly developed Palestine and Tar Springs sands. 1 Manuscript received , May 9, 1946. The parts of this paper deahng with the stratigraphy and structure of the field, and with the general discussion of the producing area and of production statistics are the work of the senior writer. The junior writer studied the available cores of igneous rock and prepared tlie section deahng with their description. This well was completed in November, 1940, and produced at the rate of 186 barrels of oil and 40 barrels of water per day from the Palestine sand. Droste and Alan Stanley Horowitz Department of Geology Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana 47405 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this report is to present the general stratigraphy of the Har- dinsburg Formation, Stephensport Group (Figure 1), in the subsurface of Indiana and to consider factors that have combined to create a belt of massive sandstones in the Hardinsburg in southwestern Indiana. These Mississippian rocks lie near the Lower Carboniferous Visean-Namurian series boundary of international ter- minology. The study area (Figure 2) is south of the northern boundaries of Sullivan and Greene Counties and west of the eastern boundaries of Greene, Martin, and Dubois Counties. The data for this report were taken from well information on file with the Indiana Geological Survey, Bloomington (Table 1). Initially, the records of ap- proximately 12,000 wells were inspected. A single well per section was selected for construction of the thickness maps, and no more than three wells per section were chosen to construct the cross sections. Intensive drilling for petroleum throughout much of the study area provides at least one well per section for which both well samples and a geophysical log are available. In areas of less dense drilling, we necessarily used wells for which either samples or wire-line logs existed.     Variations in the Stratigraphic Position and Character of the Base of the Mansfield Sandstone in Southern Indiana 1 Clyde A. Malott, Indiana University The eastern dissected fringe of the basal Pennsylvanian system of rocks overlaps northward and eastward on various formations of the Mississippian system in its passage across southwestern Indiana along the eastern margin of the Illinoian basin from Perry County on the Ohio River to Benton County in the northwestern part of the State. The basal aspects of the Pennsylvanian system in Indiana have been assigned to a single formation under the name of the Mansfield sandstone since the detailed studies by Hopkins in 1896. A single lithic name has been tolerated because it applies fairly well northward from Orange and Martin counties where its thickness only locally exceeds 100 feet or slightly more up to the Lower Block Coal of the Brazil series, which is defined as its upper limit. Southward, it appears to be divisible into several formations or stratigraphic units consisting of sandstones, local conglomerates, shales, coals, and rarely local limestones, all variable in thickness and lateral extent, and aggregating as much as 400 feet up to what may be recognized as thin representatives of the Brazil block coals. No detailed studies of these formations have been made. The local variations in thicknesses and the inconstant areal extents of the formations have discouraged stratigraphic designation, though local sequences have long been recognized. A massive, cross-bedded sand- stone, and locally a coarse, gritty and pebbly sandstone, is prevalent at or near the base of the formation.
