SSOOUUTTHHEERRNN ffAANNDDOOMM CCOONNFFEEDDEERRAATTIIOONN UUPPDDAATTEE Volume 1, issue 6 June 2009 Editor & SFC President: Warren Buff ( [email protected] ) Art Credits: Cover – Steve Stiles, this page – Brad Foster Dark Shadows article: Jeff Thompson So, we’ve got another ish of the SFCU coming out, and as always, it’s a few days later than I meant for it to be. I’m finally set up in my new apartment with a working computer and internet connection. The address there is 2412 Still Forest Pl., Apt. F, Raleigh, NC 27607. My phone is still (919) 633-4993. I’m so lonely. The good news, though, is that I’m getting this out before DeepSouthCon (okay, it’s tomorrow). I hope to see a whole bunch of y’all there. I tried to pimp it out last month, and I’m not sure how much good another rant would do, so let’s just say I hope to see a bunch of you there (and for those of you outside the South, if you don’t feel like joining us there, we can always meet at Worldcon). Let’s get on with this ish! Rebel Yells Letters from the South and abroad Here we go, folks! Another zine, another Letter Column. Starting off, we heard from the ever- friendly Jeff Thompson: Thank you, Warren, for Update #5. I always enjoy reading what you and the other fen have to say. The hyperlinks proved interesting, too. I hope to meet you at Deep South Con five weeks from now. Also, I am going to speak about director Dan Curtis, Dark Shadows, horror, and my new 200-page McFarland book, The Television Horrors of Dan Curtis: Dark Shadows, The Night Stalker, and Other Productions, 1966-2006, at the Bellevue branch of the Nashville Public Library on June 18 at 6:30 PM; at the Green Hills branch of the Nashville Public Library on July 14 at 6:30 PM; and at the Dark Shadows Festival, August 14-15-16, in Newark, New Jersey (www.darkshadowsfestival.com).

  • SEARCH Magazine, Spring 2016
SPRING 2016 magazine Celebrating Black History Opera Singer Marian Anderson Sacred Laughter: Robin Senour’s Wearable Art Spring Cleaning Made fun! COLORING CONTEST INSIDE! FROM THE EDITOR “sweet spring is your, time is my time, is our time, for spring- time is love time, and viva sweet love” —e.e. cummings When I was a child living in Alaska, spring wasn’t a sea- son so much as a celebration. I remember adults betting on the exact day the ice would break, Easter egg hunts in the snow, and playing football in the “warmer” forty degree weather. Even after all the festivities, the marking of spring was more than just the colored spots in the snow where eggs had been, it was a feeling of renewal, rebirth, and new hope. Here in California, our seasons are a bit harder to define, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take joy in the traditions that mark the season. Whether you’re attending the colorful Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown, traipsing to the mall for pictures with a bunny, or taking a trip up to Napa for some wine tasting, let the freshness of spring lighten your spirits. Use the renewal nature is experiencing to inspire you to renew your relationships, celebrate the mystery of new acquaintances, or maybe go out and do something different to meet new people. My favorite spring activity is sketching. Even if you aren’t an artist, sketching can be therapeutic, freeing, and even help document events in your life. I feel as adults, we don’t let ourselves relax and create like we did in our ele- mentary school art classes.

  • Pieta Will Be Repaired K of C to Open 4
Before and after damage 'Vandalized' Pieta will be repaired By JAMES C. O'NEILL VATICAN CITY - (NC) - Michelan- gelo's masterpiece, the Pieta, severely damaged by a hammer-wielding Hungarian will be restored as faithfully as possible to its original beauty but will remain forever flawed. The 6,700-pound statue carved from a single block of white Cararra marble was smashed by several hammer blows shortly before noon Pentecost Sunday, May 20, in its side chapel in St. Peter's Basilica. The statue, portraying the sorrowing Virgin holding the limp, dead body of Christ, is world famous and considered perhaps the most valued treasure of the Vatican. ACCORDING to visitors in the church at the time, a bearded man leaped over a low marble railing of the chapel, jumped on a table in front of the statue and began flailing away with a mason's hammer. In the rain of blows on the figure, of the Virgin the (continued on page 21) CHE PIETA," by Michelangelo, is shown left in 1964 as it was photographed during »e New York World's Fair. At right, damage to the fqmous sculpture is evident after a tan, who shouted, "I'm Jesus Christ," attacked it with a hammer severing the left rm of the Virgin and chipping some marble from Virgin's face and nose.
