CORRELATION BEWEEN THE LATE PRECAMBRIAN OLDER SANDSTONE SERIES OF THE VARANGERFJORD AND TANAFJORD AREAS PKELIMINARY REPORT by Signe-Line Røe1 ) Abstract. Sedimentary rocks belonging to the late Precambrian Older Sandstone Series (over lain unconformably by the Eo-Cambrian—Lower Cambrian Vestertana Group) are described from the Vadsø—Komagelven area on the northern side of Varanger- fjord. The c. 1300 m thick Varangerfjord Older Sandstone Series succession is divided into trwelve informal members. A correlation of the upper c. 1000 m of this succession with the late Precambrian Tanafjord Group is then presented. Finally the regional discordance present between the Older Sandstone Series and the Vestertana Group is briefly mentioned. Introduction. The area investigated is situated on the northern side of Varanger fjord, East Finnmark, between longitudes 29° 38' and 30° 20' east and latitudes 70° 04' and 70° 18' north. For mapping purposes, 1:50 000 AMS topographical maps were used as aerial photographs were not available. The mapped area covers approximately 450 sq. km. Good exposure is, in general, restricted to the coastal section and to the inland valleys. x ) Student, University of Bergen. The geological map presented with this paper does, however, include a tract of ground mapped by Siedlecka & Siedlecki in 1968, that of the Kjøltindene-Grythaugen—Holmfjellet area. Pharmacists Serving Under War Conditions in Northern Norway
PHARMACISTS SERVING UNDER WAR CONDITIONS IN NORTHERN NORWAY Klevstrand, Rolf 2609 Lillehammer, Norway This is a tale of a few pharmacists in three small towns in the northernmost part of Europe during World War Two. The towns were partly destroyed by air raids. This is of course only a small part of the long tale of sufferings during the war. A map of the Northern part of Scandinavia will show the position of the area (Fig. 1). On the map the counties of Norway are marked with different colours, Finnmark, the northernmost in light blue. Fig. 1 Like the rest of Norway Finnmark was occupied by German forces in 1940. When Germany attacked the Soviet Union in June 1941, it became part of an important war zone. The next Fig 2 map (Fig. 2) shows the short distances from the towns Vardø, Vadsø, and Kirkenes to Russia. There were German garrisons in each of them, the largest one in Kirkenes which at times had ten times as many soldiers as the local population. “Festung Kirkenes” was an important supply centre for the forces at the front in northern Russia. This made it an important target for Russian bombers. The town had not less than 328 air raids during the war. Each of the towns had one pharmacy, but there was a shortage of trained pharmacists. In 1940 the government issued a decree concerning the duty to serve for medical personnel. In accordance with this, two recently graduated male pharmacists were ordered to work in the pharmacies of Kirkenes and Vadsø from the beginning of 1944. -

For Sør-Varanger er det benyttet tall fra året for. Tabell 1 fordeler sosialhjelpstilfellene etter seks ulike familietyper: Enslige menn og kvinner uten barn under 18 år; enslige menn og kvinner med barn under 18 år; og par med og uten barn under 18 år (i par inngir både ektepar og samboerpar). Stønadstilfeller pr. 1 000 innbyggere er regnet i forhold til folketallet ved utgangen av kalenderåret. Tabell 2 oppgir verdien av brutto utbetalt økonomisk sosialhjelp både totalt og fordelt på bidrag og lin. Beregningen av gjennomsnittlig stønadsbeløp pr. år er gjort med utgangspunkt i klienter hvor stønadsbeløpet er oppgitt. I enkelte tilfeller er det registrert sosialhjelpsmottalcere i statistikken uten at stønadsbeløpet er oppgitt. Det er derfor ikke alltid at antall stønadstilfeller i tabell 1 dividert på totalt utbetalt stønad i tabell 2, gir det gjennomsnittlige stønadsbeløpet som er oppgitt for kommunen. Tabell 3 gir en fylkesvis oversikt over antall årsverk i sosialtjenesten ved utgangen av 1997. ISSN 0029-196X. The late Precambrian Ekkerøy Formation of east Finnmark occurs at the top of the Vadsø Group and extends throughout the Tanafjorden-Varangerfjorden region. It consists of a uniform vertical and lateral facies pattern, in which four facies characteristically form part of a large-scale coarsening upward, marine- dominated regressive sequence. Lateral facies and thickness variations between inner Varanger halvøya (12�190 m thick) and Varangerfjorden (15-35 m thick) are the product of both primary depositional thickness variations and a gentle, southerly dipping unconforrnity at the base of the overlying Grønnes Formation. The transgression at the base of the Grønnes Formation (basal Tanafjord Group) marked a major change in depositional conditions from the fluvially-dominated Vadsø Group below to the shallow marine-dominated Tanafjord Group above. This junction is the most distinctive lithostratigraphic horizon in an otherwise conformable 2,000 m thick, clastic-dominated succession. H. D. The Tschudi Group Divests Sydvaranger to Tacora Resources Inc
NEWS RELEASE ______________________________________________________________ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Tschudi Group Divests Sydvaranger to Tacora Resources Inc. OSLO, NORWAY, January 14, 2021 The Tschudi Group today announced that it has completed the sale of Sydvaranger Mining AS and its subsidiaries -Varanger, Norway, to Tacora Resources Inc -based iron ore mining and mineral processing company focused on high-grad iron ore commodities. Tacora recommenced operations after five years closure in June 2019 at the Scully Mine, a 6 million tonne per year iron ore concentrate producer, after its acquisition of the mine in 2017. Sydvaranger operated from 1910 to 1997, and then from 2009 to 2015 producing high grade iron ore concentrate, with an iron content of 68%, for pelletizing operations. The Tschudi Group, a Norwegian shipping and logistics company, has been involved with the Sydvaranger Mine since 2006. In 2016, the Tschudi Group re-acquired the Sydvaranger assets and has since focused its activities on completing a feasibility study and preparing ore concentrate has significant environmental and cost benefits for steel producers and pelletizing operations, including increased blast furnace productivity, reduced slag volumes, lower CO2 emissions per tonne of steel produced and reduced energy requirements for pelletizing, amongst others. The recent Definitive Feasibility Study confirmed a potential for a 4 million tonne pear year iron ore concentrate production. welcome Tacora as the new owners of Sydvaranger. Since 2016, the Tschudi Group has sought to provide Sydvaranger with the financial and operational capabilities to enable a restart of the mining operations. By introducing Orion Mine Finance as a financial partner in 2018 and by now combining Sydvaranger with the operationally experienced Tacora team, we believe Sydvaranger is in an excellent position to succeed with a restart. -

Arctic warming and decreasing sea-ice cover along the Siberian coast in the Arctic Ocean leads to greater accessibility for operations such as oil drilling and traffic of tankers. This implies increasing risks for Steller’s Eider Polysticta stelleri wintering, moulting and staging along the coasts of the Varanger Peninsula, Norway. Steller’s Eiders were surveyed by monthly counts during winter and early spring 2016/2017 to investigate numbers and distribution throughout the winter. The highest number of wintering Steller’s Eiders was found in January, representing ~7 % of the European population. In February–April numbers were lower, but at a rather stable level. We found relatively little variation in distribution between months, although the birds were more evenly distributed along the coast later in winter. Mean flock size was significantly larger in January than in March and April. Feeding behaviour was exclusively observed in shallow water, generally at depths of up to 6 m. Areas of focus for an oil pollution emergency plan are pointed out and discussed. Legislative Council Secretariat FSC21/13-14 FACT SHEET Overview of Norway Geography Land area Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is located in northern Europe. It has a total land area of 304 282 sq km divided into 19 counties. Oslo is the capital of the country and seat of government. Demographics Population Norway had a population of about 5.1 million at end-July 2014. The majority of the population were Norwegian (94%), followed by ethnic minority groups such as Polish, Swedish and Pakistanis. History Political ties Norway has a history closely linked to that of its immediate with neighbours, Sweden and Denmark. Norway had been an Denmark and independent kingdom in its early period, but lost its Sweden independence in 1380 when it entered into a political union with Denmark through royal intermarriage. Subsequently both Norway and Denmark formed the Kalmar Union with Sweden in 1397, with Denmark as the dominant power. Following the withdrawal of Sweden from the Union in 1523, Norway was reduced to a dependence of Denmark in 1536 under the Danish-Norwegian Realm. Union The Danish-Norwegian Realm was dissolved in between January 1814, when Denmark ceded Norway to Sweden as Norway and part of the Kiel Peace Agreement. That same year Sweden Norway – tired of forced unions – drafted and adopted its own Constitution. Norway's struggle for independence was subsequently quelled by a Swedish invasion. In the end, Norwegians were allowed to keep their new Constitution, but were forced to accept the Norway-Sweden Union under a Swedish king.
