“I had the time of my life” Andrea Karch The issue of radicalization might be a bitter-tasting stigma of Generation-Ym, “bills of capi- talism” (Charles Taylor). At the same time the mainstream media seems to play tug-of-war between the description of an ideologically brainwashed individual and the idea of “the mass murderer next door”. News, ripe for the boulevard press and social media platforms. A clear typography of radicalized youth is impossible, though. But in a society in which the dematerialization of value and meaning seems to be a general trend, the phenomenon of young individuals that turn towards models of violence as their dernier ressort to self-identifi- cation, might be a result of just the same. IDENTITY A photo of a buff, male Neo-Nazi. His head is white, round and shaved. He has got jug ears, his mouth is opened slightly and crooked, his chin is extraordinarily large. He wears a blue Pitt Bull T-Shirt and Levis Jeans, jump boots and suspenders. He holds a leash with a light grey poodle at the end of it. This image probably is photoshopped. The New York Post’s cover photo allegedly portrays Hasna Ait Boulahcen, the first female suicide bomber who died in a raid fol- lowing the Paris attacks. Covered in a bubble bath, the shown woman is nude. The cover title is “Rub a dub dub... THUG IN A TUB”. Her whole story later turned out to have been a fake. Alexandre Bissonette’s last facebook post before he commits the Quebec city mosque shooting 2017, shows a dog wearing a Dominos pizza delivery outfit with the caption “I want one! #fridayfeeling.” An ISIS fighter holds a delicate kitten in his arms: ISILCats@Twitter “My Mewjahid protectz me”. -

From The Guv’nor’ Jim Marshall* ENGLISH I would like to personally congratulate you on choosing the all-valve, 100 Watt, JVM410HJS Joe Satriani Signature amplifi er. Joe worked very closely with my top R&D chap, Santiago Alvarez, on this amp for a number of years and the result of this collaboration is fantastic. As is the fact that Joe has quite literally road-tested the prototypes on tour all over the world and also in the recording studio. I’ve followed Joe’s career ever since his self-fi nanced debut album, Not of This Earth, came out in the mid ‘80s. I’m delighted that he recorded many of his classic instrumentals using Marshall amps. In fact, some of the sounds the JVM410HJS’s modes are capable of pay homage to many of those great old amps he relied on – from JMPs to the 30th Anniversary 6100 that he used for so many years. Like Joe, I’m extremely proud of the amp that he and Santiago have developed. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you every success with your new Marshall JVM410HJS. Strategy/Lesson Suggestions Assessment FOR Learning Suggestions The following strategy utilizes a CCSS text exemplar from the 9-10 grade band. Statement Starter. Students partner and provide each other objective This strategy can be adapted to fit a variety of texts with an aligned level of feedback on their completed tables. The teacher then presents the class with complexity. a statement: “Ladies and gentlemen, Patrick Henry was a pacifist!” Close Read. Students conduct a close read of a text such as Patrick Henry’s or “Speech to the Second Virginia Convention”. The Oxygen of Amplification Better Practices for Reporting on Extremists, Antagonists, and Manipulators Online By Whitney Phillips EXECUTIVE SUMMARY MAPPING THE MEDIA ECOSYSTEM We live in a time where new forms of power are emerging, where social and digital media are being leveraged to reconfigure the information landscape. This new domain requires journalists to take what they know about abuses of power and media manipulation in traditional information ecosystems and apply that knowledge to networked actors, such as white nationalist networks online. These actors create new journalistic stumbling blocks that transcend attempts to manipulate reporters solely to spin a beneficial narrative – which reporters are trained to decode – and instead represent a larger effort focused on spreading hateful ideology and other false and misleading narratives, with news coverage itself harnessed to fuel hate, confusion, and discord. The choices reporters and editors make about what to cover and how to cover it play a key part in regulating the amount of oxygen supplied to the falsehoods, antagonisms, and manipulations that threaten to overrun the contemporary media ecosystem—and, simultaneously, threaten to undermine democratic discourse more broadly. This context demands that journalists and the newsrooms that support them examine with greater scrutiny how these actors and movements endeavor to subvert journalism norms, practices, and objectives. More importantly, journalists, editors, and publishers must determine how the journalistic rule set must be strengthened and fortified against this newest form of journalistic manipulation—in some cases through the rigorous upholding of long-standing journalistic principles, and in others, by recognizing which practices and structural limitations make reporters particularly vulnerable to manipulation. -

Its reports, programming and materials will bridge gaps, and prompt information exchange and learning across the military, academia, industrial, and governmental communities. 7 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY EXECUTIVE SUMMARY (BLUF) This report shares the findings and conclusions of a study on the future of extremism in America. We use the Threatcasting methodology of inquiry and look at how extremism will manifest itself and how extremist ideologies, manifestos, and actions will motivate people towards violence in the year 2031, a decade away. The Threatcasting Lab used a repository of futures models from previous threatcasting events that we mined for markers of extremism in America and hosted a workshop to generate additional models and insights. -

During our long ride through Jakarta’s famously congested streets, a cassette containing a single dangdut song (Apa adanya [Whatever comes] by Ine Sinthya, from her forthcoming cassette) played continuously on the car stereo system. After a while, I finally asked the driver, whose name was Syaiful, if he was growing tired of hearing the same tune repeated over and over. He smiled and said no. A while later, searching for something to talk about, I asked him why he thought the lyrics of dangdut songs were often so sad. In reply, he explained: Because dangdut songs represent the innermost feelings of us all. Pop sing ers just sing for themselves, but dangdut singers represent us all, like we were the ones singing…Dangdut is broader, closer to society.2 I realized immediately that Syaiful’s response contained a succinct sum mation of a pervasive genre ideology concerning dangdut music and its place in contemporary Indonesian society. Abstract: Drawing on a qualitative analysis of 5,996 tweets and 480 mainstream news stories about the Florida State University (FSU) and the Ohio State University (OSU) shootings, we examine who emerges as opinion leaders during crises, the kinds of narratives they help construct about school shootings, and the relative civility of these narratives. We find that the opinion leaders who emerge after a crisis are assumed to have local knowledge about the incident and/or are able to quickly curate information about the incident. Additionally, we find that the quality of information spread by opinion leaders is critical to narrative construction and civility.
