CHANG AND HANNAH BROWN Pachappa Camp The First Koreatown in the United States ABSTRACT Ahn Chang Ho (also known by his pen name, Dosan) moved to Riverside, California, in March 1904 and soon established the first Koreatown on the U.S. mainland, known as Dosan’s Republic or Pachappa Camp. Dosan helped found a local employment agency and negotiated relations with citrus farmers to find work for Koreans who lived in the community. With steady work available, Riverside became a popular destination for Korean immigrants and was thus an ideal location for the Gongnip Hyeophoe, or Cooperative Association, which Dosan created to foster a sense of community. The Gong- nip Hyeophoe later expanded to Korean settlements throughout California and eventually developed into the Korean National Association, which proved especially significant in organizing immigrants to fight for Korea’s independence in the wake of Japanese colonization in 1910. Pachappa Camp helped anchor its residents’ identity and supported Koreans’ struggles to support themselves and to fight for Korean sovereignty. The experiences of the Koreans in Pachappa Camp reflected not only exceptional moments in Korean American history, as the first Koreatown in the United States and one of the seats of the independence movement, but also the ubiquitous experiences that typified immigrant lives in the United States.

He is one of a handful of top literary figures in Asian American literary and cultural communities, and he is distinguished as being the first Asian American playwright produced in New York City. He founded the Asian American Theater Workshop in San Francisco which later evolved into the Asian American Theater Company (AATC). In discussing the value of the papers, Chin remarked, "I hope that my collection of research, letters and experimental manuscripts will stimulate a more traditional study of Asian American literature, beginning with an introduction to the Asian children's stories shared by China, Korea, and Japan since pre-historic times, and the "vernacular novels" developed to spread Chinese heroic tradition of the Ming, as a conscious expression of the myth of civilization throughout Asia.” “By making my papers available to the public, I hope that my efforts to treat knowledge of Asia and America as equally important will be seen and used.” Born February 25, 1940, Frank Chin describes himself as a fifth generation Chinaman.

Towson University College of Graduate Studies and Research JAPANESE AMERICAN INTERNMENT CAMPS: EFFECT UPON WARTIME AND POST-WAR MALE AND FEMALE GENDER ROLES WITHIN FAMILY AND COMMUNITY By Holly B. Turner A thesis Presented to the faculty of Towson University In partial fulfillment Of the requirements for the degree Master of Science in Social Science January, 2012 Towson University Towson, Maryland 21252 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Upon the completion of this Master’s thesis, I sincerely want to thank my committee members Dr. Clifford, Dr. Korzi, Dr. Dombrowski-Risser, and Dr. Masatsugu. I would not have been able to do this without them. I am deeply indebted to Dr. Masatsugu who spent hours helping and encouraging me to keep growing and researching this topic. I would not have chosen this topic if it was not for Dr. Dombrowski-Risser’s Comparative Historiography Women and War class, which exposed me in great detail to Japanese American Internment. Simultaneously, my Japanese grandmother passed two weeks prior to Dr. Dombrowski-Risser’s class, which emotionally I was attracted to this subject. I want to thank my family and friends for all their love and support throughout this academic journey. They listened to me the entire time ramble on about my work. Thank you to everyone who believed in me and for being so patient. Lastly, I want to thank my grandmother, Hisae Nagasaka DeLuca, my inspiration for writing this paper. iii ABSTRACT JAPANESE AMERICAN INTERNMENT CAMPS: EFFECT UPON WARTIME AND POST-WAR GENDER ROLES WITHIN FAMILY AND COMMUNITY Holly B. Turner The purpose of this thesis is to educate readers about a topic that often is overlooked and to provide additional information and offer a new interpretation about the transformation of gender roles from Japanese American men and women who were sent to internment camps during WWII.

The film features the occasional bit of on screen music, including a squeeze box in a London pub, and a band playing at a dance: Composer Nathan Waks: Unsurprisingly, given Nathan Waks instrument of choice, the cello tends to dominate in the score. Waks has a brief wiki here. Waks was a prominent player in various quartets, and was for a time one of the co-principal cello players for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has also developed interests in the wine game, most notably Kilikanoon Winery in South Australia's Clare Valley. According to director Gillian Armstrong, Waks was a cousin of producer Margaret Fink, who introduced him to Armstrong as an "incredible cellist" with an "extraordinary musical knowledge", and so he put together the score for My Brilliant Career, before moving on to continue the working relationship with Fink on For Love Alone. The Australian Cello Awards, here, provides this useful short CV for Waks: An important and innovative member of Australiaʼs musical establishment over the last three decades, solo cellist, chamber musician, principal cellist and administrator Nathan Waks is one of our most colourful classical musicians.

1661 ·~upds 06v :l!snw 1un woN ~u-e r .A.rnw Vll3d0 3H.L .LV .LNVA3'l liV~SO Oscar Levant is known for his songs in the area of popular music, but his operas are virtually unknown. Obtaining and studying any one of his three operas should be important for establishing him as more than a popular-music composer. Levant's opera Carnival, from the 20th Century Fox movie Charlie Chan at the Opera, is especially worthy of consideration. Through careful analysis of this work, much can be learned about the style and interests of Oscar Levant. While comparisons to other composers and their works may be too extensive for this specific paper, some comparisons to Levant's own popular tunes of the same time period as Carnival may reveal remarkable similarities and/or differences. Along with an analysis of the score, observation of the opera as it is presented in the movie will provide information about the basis for its content and reveal its incorporation into the movie's plot. In addition, seeing the movie will give aural information, such as the types of instruments used. The interest in this topic stems from Oscar Levant's own books A Smattering of Ignorance, The Unimportance of Being Oscar, and The Memoirs of an Amnesiac. He refers to this opera in A Smattering of Ignorance. but his references to his musical acquaintances in The Memoirs of an Amnesiac may supply additional facts to help in understanding his musical style. Examining c 'arnival will contribute to showing the significance of Oscar Levant's style of composition.

A companion article on Asian masculinities was published in conference papers (Luke, 2002). My original talk included videoclips of my Uncle, Keye Luke, in Star Trek, “Whom Gods Destroy” (Series 3, episode 13, 1969) and with clips of my Father, Edwin Luke, in Blood Alley (Dir. William Wellman, Batjak Productions, 1956). The work sat unpublished until my mother, Ahlin Wong Luke, passed in 2007. My Father and Uncle’s representations continue to circulate in the transnational semiotic ether – as downloads, as DVDs, and in Wikipedia. I am rereading my Father’s film scripts, reconnoitring his experiences and, indeed, mine. As you read, you will notice that my discussion of ethnic narratives has been overtaken by subsequent work in film, cultural and Asian-American studies. I have retained the original 1990s citations in this work, updating them only where relevant. The premise of the article stands: that in contemporary capitalist societies like those of North America and Europe, essentialist bids to reclaim originary ethnic voice and identity are invariably forged in the contexts of multimediated childhood. Identity and practice are shaped by media representations of ‘cultures’, even where they are reproduced across generations by face-to-face and everyday exchanges between parents, community elders and youth.
