First, it's clear that the Edwards campaign was looking for someone who would be as abrasive as Marcotte on issues such as abortion, birth control, and social conservatives. They went for Beyerstein first, and when they couldn't have her they went for Marcotte - and "Bob" was well aware of the things that both Beyerstein and Marcotte had written in the past. It was no accident that the Edwards campaign ended up with somebody like Marcotte. That's who they were looking for all along. The second thing this reveals is the completely disingenuous nature of John Edwards' announcement that he would not fire Marcotte. He said: "The tone and the sentiment of some of Amanda Marcotte's and Melissa McEwan's posts personally offended me." If that's the case, then why did he hire them in the first place? Before, we might have assumed that he didn't know about their moonbat posts. We now know that wasn't the case, which makes his assertion that he found their posts offensive awfully suspicious. If he did find them offensive, he must not have minded hiring them despite the offense their posts caused. http://www.redstate.com/blogs/nathan_nelson/2007/feb/26/breaking_edwards_campaign_knew_marcottes_hi story Amazing Grace and the Personal - To make what may be an obvious connection, Amazing Grace caused me to think about abortion I saw Amazing Grace last night, which is the story of the British politician William Wilberforce's his drive to end the slave trade in the world's greatest superpower within his lifetime. The film was impressive, both artistically and in its emotional impact. Wilberforce's story brings you within the power of a quest for justice. You can literally feel the passion to save the Africans from the brutality of the slave trade and the tremendous frustration of Wilberforce and his group as they are blocked at every turn. Stress, anguish, and overwork led Wilberforce to ruin his health battling against the hold of slavery on his culture and its conception of economic interest. To make what may be an obvious connection, Amazing Grace caused me to think about abortion. When I became a Christian in college, I began to be exposed to the case for ending the practice of abortion. Over time, I grew strong in the conviction that abortion ended a human life, that it was violent and barbaric, and that all possible steps should be taken to prohibit the procedure. ... http://www.redstate.com/stories/culture/amazing_grace_and_the_personal 'Amazing Grace' film about Wilberforce called inspirational - movie -- to be released Feb. 2007 and rated PG Wednesday, June 25, 2008 14:10 GMT / Created by RSS2PDF.com Page 3 of 134 NASHVILLE, Tenn.

  • Diana, Princess of Wales
Diana, Princess of Wales The Lady Diana Frances Spencer (Diana Frances Mountbatten- Windsor, née Spencer) (1 July 1961–31 August 1997) was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales. From her marriage in 1981 to her divorce in 1996 she was styled Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales. After her divorce in 1996, Diana ceased to be a Royal Highness and The Princess of Wales and instead was styled Diana, Princess of Wales. She was often called Princess Diana by the media and the public, but this was incorrect both during and after her marriage, as she was only ever a Princess by marriage, not by birth.' An iconic presence on the world- stage, Diana, Princess of Wales was noted for her pioneering charity work. Yet her philanthropic endeavours were overshadowed by her scandal-plagued marriage to Prince Charles. Her bitter accusations via friends and biographers of adultery, mental cruelty and emotional distress visited upon her riveted the world for much of the 1990s, spawning books, magazine articles and television movies. From the time of her engagement to the Prince of Wales in 1981 until her death in a car accident in 1997, the Princess was arguably the most famous woman in the world, the pre-eminent female celebrity of her generation: a fashion icon, an image of feminine beauty, admired and emulated for her high-profile involvement in AIDS issues and the international campaign against landmines. During her lifetime, she was often referred to as the most photographed person in the world. To her admirers, The Princess of Wales was a role model — after her death, there were even calls for her to be nominated for sainthood — while her detractors saw her life as a cautionary tale of how an obsession with publicity can ultimately destroy an individual.

  • Diana and Race: Romance and the Reconfiguration of the Nation1
Diana and Race: Romance and the Reconfiguration of the Nation1 Mica Nava This article was published in Mourning Diana: Nation, Culture and the Performance of Grief, edited by Adrian Kear and Lynn Steinberg, London: Routledge (1999). A slightly modified version entitled ‘Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed: Romance, Race and the Reconfiguration of the Nation’ was included as Chapter 7 in Mica Nava’s Visceral Cosmopolitanism: Gender, Culture and the Normalisation of Difference, Oxford: Berg (2007) Introduction Every now and again there are cultural events which freeze frame the transformed and transformative elements of a historical period. Princess Diana’s death and the week which followed exposed to the world the lineaments of a new British nation which bore no resemblance to the conventional heritage images disseminated around the globe in travel posters, films and BBC dramas over the decades since world war two and the decline of empire. The lead role, it is true, still belonged to a princess, but the supporting cast – the metropolitan populace - was composed to a remarkable extent of the visibly-different dark-skinned children and grandchildren of Britain’s former colonies, bolstered by a cosmopolitan ragbag of migrant physiognomies from around the world. And more striking still: in this new scenario the lover of the golden haired princess was dark-skinned and from somewhere else as well. The public face of Britain was no longer white. This new picture of the nation, captured and played back on the endless hours of television footage, was transmitted not only to the world outside. It registered and was constitutive of a transformation in the domestic consciousness as well.

From a Western perspective, particularly an American one, it is easy to categorize all Vietnamese immigrants under the same umbrella. Although there are similarities among all three waves, one significant element that differentiates the third wave from the other two is the United States’ enactment of the Amerasian Homecoming Act of 1987, which facilitated an influx of Vietnamese Americans to the U.S.

Thanks mainly to Hallyu (Korean Wave), it has suddenly become part of the Filipino consciousness and the interest to study it in various aspects has finally been rekindled in the Philippine academe. There are definitely many other factors contributing to this phenomenal development but Hallyu has indeed remarkably made a difference in the process, owing to the huge influence that it renders to the populace through various media. Amid such growing interest toward Korea arises the need to understand its culture and society. It is in this respect where the role of the academe becomes notably significant.
