Daryl Cacatian, material handling supervisor, is still considered new after 10 years of service. We work together when the finished foam containers come off the thermoformer equipment. Once each job is complete, he removes the container mold and inserts the different mold for another job. Finished containers are loaded on forklifts and taken to the warehouse. Cacatian notices many people, even when they enjoy hikes, have no respect for the environment. They throw their food wrappers everywhere. He cleans up after them. Rey Ramos, who switched from night to day shift supervisor, thinks that people need more education about the proper disposal of trash. Trash placed in rubbish bins go to HPOWER to burn for electricity. Compostable products are burned at HPOWER too because there is no industrial composting facility here. Polystyrene food container bans makes him sad and like other workers, Rey, who’s been at HFP for 15 years, worries about keeping his well-paying job with good benefits. Bill 71, proposed by Council Member Kymberly Pine, will ban foam meat trays and egg cartons as well as plate lunch containers on Oahu. Rey does not understand why government wants this even though foam products are less expensive and take less material to manufacture. In the front office, Mon Santos, HFP/KYD production clerk since 2004, handles job order quotes and deals with vendor contracts and rebates. KYD also distributes other manufacturers’ containers and packaging, including compostable containers. He thinks foam containers are far better than compostable containers. He’s used a compostable plate for saving his adobo, pinakbet, rice and lechon dinner in the refrigerator only to have the food leak through. Mon wondered why HFP is blamed for harming turtles in the ocean when the real problem is consumers who don’t dispose of trash properly. Conrad Aldana comes close to matching my time at HFP/KYD with 27 years. As a HFP/ KYD processing clerk, he costs out jobs from raw materials to the finished product. Aldana shared with me that during a recent visit to the Philippines, he observed that the streets were clean in the early morning.
