FROM the Mayor Dates to Know January 1 They Say That Time Flies When You’Re Having Fun
celebrating our past, present and future inPublished by the tuckerCity of Tucker, GA JANUARY 2018 FROM the mayor Dates to know January 1 They say that time flies when you’re having fun. I would add that it also flies when you’re working hard. New Year’s Day It’s hard to believe that 2017 is already over. The strides we’ve made this year as a City have surpassed all (City Hall closed) expectations of myself and my colleagues on the City Council. While we put in countless hours studying development plans, exploring economic development opportunities and communicating on important January 8 issues with our constituents, our staff at City Hall supported us and guided us through some really City Council Meeting & crucial issues that will have long-term impacts on Tucker. Consider that in 2017: Swearing-In Ceremony • we worked through the bulk of our Comprehensive Plan process January 15 • our voters passed a SPLOST to provide $5-6 million per year for much-needed infrastructure Martin Luther King, Jr. improvements around Tucker Day • we collaborated with DeKalb County on numerous intergovernmental agreements (IGAs) (City Hall closed) • our Community Development staff saw a 22 percent increase in the number of land use applications they processed year-over-year January 22 • we licensed nearly 300 new businesses to operate in the City of Tucker, meaning there are now City Council close to 1,800 businesses operating in the City, providing jobs for more than 20,000 people • we hired our very first Director of Parks and Recreation and brought on an eight-person staff to provide a superior level of service to students and program participants at Tucker Recreation In an effort to connect Center (read more on Page 7) with as many Tucker residents as possible, we That doesn’t even begin to include the accomplishments of our volunteer and civic groups. -

John Hughes' Family Films and Seriality
Article Title ‘Give people what they expect’: John Hughes’ Family Films and Seriality in 1990s Hollywood Author Details: Dr Holly Chard [email protected] Biography: Holly Chard is Lecturer in Contemporary Screen Media at the University of Brighton. Her research focuses on the U.S. media industries in the 1980s and 1990s. Her recent and forthcoming publications include: a chapter on Macaulay Culkin’s career as a child star, a monograph focusing on the work of John Hughes and a co- authored journal article on Hulk Hogan’s family films. Acknowledgements: The author would like to thank Frank Krutnik and Kathleen Loock for their invaluable feedback on this article and Daniel Chard for assistance with proofreading. 1 ‘Give people what they expect’: John Hughes’ Family Films and Seriality in 1990s Hollywood Keywords: seriality, Hollywood, comedy, family film Abstract: This article explores serial production strategies and textual seriality in Hollywood cinema during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Focusing on John Hughes’ ‘high concept’ family comedies, it examines how Hughes exploited the commercial opportunities offered by serial approaches to both production and film narrative. First, I consider why Hughes’ production set-up enabled him to standardize his movies and respond quickly to audience demand. My analysis then explores how the Home Alone films (1990-1997), Dennis the Menace (1993) and Baby’s Day Out (1994) balanced demands for textual repetition and novelty. Article: Described by the New York Times as ‘the most prolific independent filmmaker in Hollywood history’, John Hughes created and oversaw a vast number of movies in the 1980s and 1990s.1 In a period of roughly fourteen years, from the release of National Lampoon’s Vacation (Ramis, 1983) to the release of Home Alone 3 (Gosnell, 1997), Hughes received screenwriting credits on twenty-seven screenplays, of which he produced eighteen, directed eight and executive produced two. -

ABSTRACT Title of Document: I Forgive You But it is My Christian Duty to Punish You Annette Lutivini Majanja, Master of Fine Arts, 2013 Directed By: Professor Howard Norman, Department of English This is a collection of stories about Kenyan characters that are the public face of homegrown success. They are obedient children and responsible working adults. For many of these characters it becomes clear that there is a big gap between voiced facts about their lives and the unspoken truths about what they are. Rumors, gossip, letter writing and private prayer undermine this public face. During Daniel Arap Moi’s Presidency between 1978 and 2002, Kenyan children were taught in school that Moi was the generous Baba wa Taifa or father of the Nation who supplied them with free school milk. He was the number one farmer, teacher, headmaster and chancellor of all universities in Kenya. This is where the characters in this story collection live. A Note from the Composer

A NOTE FROM THE COMPOSER Ever since Home Alone appeared, it has held a unique place in the affections of a very broad public. Director Chris Columbus brought a uniquely fresh and innocent approach to this delightful story, and the film has deservedly become a perennial at holiday time. I took great pleasure in composing the score for the film, and I am especially delighted that the magnificent Toronto Symphony Orchestra has agreed to perform the music in a live presentation of the movie. I know I speak for everyone connected with the making of the film in saying that we are greatly honoured by this event…and I hope that the audience at this performance will experience the renewal of joy that the film brings with it, each and every year. Boardwalk Empire
BOARDWALK EMPIRE "Pilot" Written by Terence Winter FIRST DRAFT April 16, 2008 EXT. ATLANTIC OCEAN - NIGHT With a buoy softly clanging in the distance, a 90-foot fishing schooner, the Tomoka, rocks lazily on the open ocean, waves gently lapping at its hull. ON DECK BILL MCCOY, pensive, 40, checks his pocket watch, then spits tobacco juice as he peers into the darkness. In the distance, WE SEE flickering lights, then HEAR the rumble of motorboats approaching, twenty in all. Their engines idle as the first pulls up and moors alongside. BILL MCCOY (calling down) Sittin' goddarnn duck out here. DANNY MURDOCH, tough, 30s, looks up from the motorboat, where he's accompanied by a YOUNG HOOD, 18. MURDOCH So move it then, c'mon. ON DECK McCoy yankS a canvas tarp off a mountainous stack of netted cargo -- hundreds of crates marked 'Canadian Club Whiskey·. With workmanlike precision, he and .. three CREWMAN hoist the first load of two dozen crates up and over the side, lowering it down on a pulley. As the net reaches the motorboat: MURDOCH (CONT'D) (to the Young Hood) Liquid gold, boyo. They finish setting the load in place, then Murdoch guns the motorboat and heads off. Another boat putters in to take his slot as the next cargo net is lowered. TRACK WITH MURDOCH'S MOTORBOAT as it heads inland through the darkness over the water. Slowly, a KINGDOM OF LIGHTS appears on the horizon, with grand hotels, massive neon signs, carnival rides and giant lighted piers lining its shore. As we draw closer, WE HEAR faint music which grows louder and LOUDER -- circus calliope mixed with raucous Dixieland jazz. -
Creating “Star Trek CATAN – Federation Space”
Creating “Star Trek CATAN – Federation Space” After Star Trek Catan was so well received, and as many of you asked us to take this joint venture of the two franchises Catan and Star Trek even further towards the “Final Frontier,” we thought long and hard about what kind of game expansion you would enjoy. As we knew that a lot of players liked our Catan Geographies™ maps so much, which take the whole Settlers of Catan experience towards a real map to put settlements in, we thought: Let us take Star Trek Catan into a “real” region of space to put our little NCC-1701 spaceships in. The crucial question was: Is there a region of space sufficiently “real” inside the Star Trek – The Original Series time period? After a bit of research, we discovered this wonderful map titled “The Explored Galaxy” over at the Memory Alpha wiki. As it turned out, this was “as real as it could get,” as it had been first shown hanging on a wall in none other than Captain James T. Kirk’s quarters in the Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country motion picture (and subsequently in various episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation). Every true Star Trek fan knows that this particular map depicts a lot of the known and beloved locations shown in The Original Series of the 60s, and some of those from The Animated Series of the 70s. We took great effort to investigate and cross-reference all these depicted celestial bodies with their respective episodes. © CATAN GmbH - Page 1 We then added a couple of planets that were not actually shown on this map but that we would really want to have in our game, and tried to pinpoint their locations according to mostly in-canon and sometimes semi-canon sources. -
