Composer Waks was nominated for an ARIA award in 1987, with Robyn Archer winning for her stage play (adapted for television), The Pack of Women.

The film features the occasional bit of on screen music, including a squeeze box in a London pub, and a band playing at a dance: Nathan Waks: Unsurprisingly, given Nathan Waks instrument of choice, the cello tends to dominate in the score. Waks has a brief wiki here. Waks was a prominent player in various quartets, and was for a time one of the co-principal cello players for the Symphony Orchestra. He has also developed interests in the wine game, most notably Kilikanoon Winery in South 's Clare Valley.

According to director Gillian Armstrong, Waks was a cousin of producer Margaret Fink, who introduced him to Armstrong as an "incredible cellist" with an "extraordinary musical knowledge", and so he put together the score for My Brilliant Career, before moving on to continue the working relationship with Fink on For Love Alone.

The Australian Cello Awards, here, provides this useful short CV for Waks:

An important and innovative member of Australiaʼs musical establishment over the last three decades, solo cellist, chamber musician, principal cellist and administrator Nathan Waks is one of our most colourful classical musicians. Nathan Waks began his studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with cellist Lois Simpson and chamber musician Robert Pikler. He won the ABC National Concerto Competition and travelled to Europe to further his musical education, training with Mstistlav Rostropovich in Moscow and Paul Tortelier in Paris. From being the youngest Principal Cellist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at age 19 to performing as a soloist with major Australian orchestras, Waks has enjoyed a career that has featured recording of film scores and accompaniment to international recording artists. He has organized concerts for singers Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart and Tiny Tim. He is a founding member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Australian Music Centre and has held directorships at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Symphony Australia, the Australia Council and the Australian National Academy of Music. He has toured to more than 50 countries and recorded for a decade with The Sydney String Quartet. Presently he creates new music with Waks Generation, a collaboration with DJ and son, Sam, and is working on a musical project with composer Charlie Chan. Nathan Waks is now proprietor and Executive Director of Kilikanoon and Seppeltsfield wineries. Nathan plays a David Tecchler-made 1723 cello.

Kilikanoon here explains how Waks got into the wine game:

A chance meeting at a local pub in 2001 initiated the partnership between Nathan and Kevin. Studying at the Paris Conservatoire in the late 1960's instigated a passion for wine, which was further developed upon his return to Australia. Nathan was Principal Cellist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and has been known to perform while travelling internationally as the Kilikanoon Brand Ambassador.

Waks had a brief flirtation with Twitter, but at time of writing his account here was inactive.

The score was released as an LP: LP WEA 254138-1 1986
