Music Nathan Waks Music Performed by the Australian Chamber Orchestra Leader Carl Pini Oboes Ann Gilbey Guy Henderson Flute Geoff Collins Piano David Miller and Academy Trio John Winther John Harding Nathan Waks Faure, Romance Sans Paroles Opus 17, No. 3 Faure, Pavane Opus 50 Telemann, Trio Sonata in B flat 'Tess's Tango', 'Quick's Quickstep' and 'Panama Hat' Composed by Nathan Waks And performed by The Terry Wilkinson Dance Band Recording Engineers Gerry Nixon Glen Phimister Composer Waks was nominated for an ARIA award in 1987, with Robyn Archer winning for her stage play (adapted for television), The Pack of Women. The film features the occasional bit of on screen music, including a squeeze box in a London pub, and a band playing at a dance: Composer Nathan Waks: Unsurprisingly, given Nathan Waks instrument of choice, the cello tends to dominate in the score. Waks has a brief wiki here. Waks was a prominent player in various quartets, and was for a time one of the co-principal cello players for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has also developed interests in the wine game, most notably Kilikanoon Winery in South Australia's Clare Valley. According to director Gillian Armstrong, Waks was a cousin of producer Margaret Fink, who introduced him to Armstrong as an "incredible cellist" with an "extraordinary musical knowledge", and so he put together the score for My Brilliant Career, before moving on to continue the working relationship with Fink on For Love Alone. The Australian Cello Awards, here, provides this useful short CV for Waks: An important and innovative member of Australiaʼs musical establishment over the last three decades, solo cellist, chamber musician, principal cellist and administrator Nathan Waks is one of our most colourful classical musicians.

1661 ·~upds 06v :l!snw 1un woN ~u-e r .A.rnw Vll3d0 3H.L .LV .LNVA3'l liV~SO Oscar Levant is known for his songs in the area of popular music, but his operas are virtually unknown. Obtaining and studying any one of his three operas should be important for establishing him as more than a popular-music composer. Levant's opera Carnival, from the 20th Century Fox movie Charlie Chan at the Opera, is especially worthy of consideration. Through careful analysis of this work, much can be learned about the style and interests of Oscar Levant. While comparisons to other composers and their works may be too extensive for this specific paper, some comparisons to Levant's own popular tunes of the same time period as Carnival may reveal remarkable similarities and/or differences. Along with an analysis of the score, observation of the opera as it is presented in the movie will provide information about the basis for its content and reveal its incorporation into the movie's plot. In addition, seeing the movie will give aural information, such as the types of instruments used. The interest in this topic stems from Oscar Levant's own books A Smattering of Ignorance, The Unimportance of Being Oscar, and The Memoirs of an Amnesiac. He refers to this opera in A Smattering of Ignorance. but his references to his musical acquaintances in The Memoirs of an Amnesiac may supply additional facts to help in understanding his musical style. Examining c 'arnival will contribute to showing the significance of Oscar Levant's style of composition.

WMC INVESTIGATION: 10-YEAR ANALYSIS OF GENDER & OSCAR NOMINATIONS womensmediacenter.com @womensmediacntr WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER ABOUT THE WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER In 2005, Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem founded the Women’s Media Center (WMC), a progressive, nonpartisan, nonproft organization endeav- oring to raise the visibility, viability, and decision-making power of women and girls in media and thereby ensuring that their stories get told and their voices are heard. To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. Our strategic tools include monitoring the media; commissioning and conducting research; and undertaking other special initiatives to spotlight gender and racial bias in news coverage, entertainment flm and television, social media, and other key sectors. Our publications include the book “Unspinning the Spin: The Women’s Media Center Guide to Fair and Accurate Language”; “The Women’s Media Center’s Media Guide to Gender Neutral Coverage of Women Candidates + Politicians”; “The Women’s Media Center Media Guide to Covering Reproductive Issues”; “WMC Media Watch: The Gender Gap in Coverage of Reproductive Issues”; “Writing Rape: How U.S. Media Cover Campus Rape and Sexual Assault”; “WMC Investigation: 10-Year Review of Gender & Emmy Nominations”; and the Women’s Media Center’s annual WMC Status of Women in the U.S.

In addition to the special events in this newsletter, Amherst Cinema shows current-release film on four screens every day. Visit amherstcinema.org and join our weekly e-newsletter for the latest offerings. films of Kelly Reichardt In anticipation of the March 2020 opening of her new movie, FIRST COW, Amherst Cinema is pleased to present four films from the back catalog of director Kelly Reichardt. Reichardt's dramas are small-scale symphonies; alchemical transmogrifications of the ordinary into gripping cinematic experiences. Often collaborating with the same creatives across multiple pictures, such as actor Michelle Williams and writer Jonathan Raymond, Reichardt's films turn the WENDY AND LUCY lens on those in some way at the margins of American communities. Be it a woman living out of her car in WENDY AND LUCY, a group of lost 1840s pioneers in MEEK'S CUTOFF, a reclusive ranch hand in CERTAIN WOMEN, or a hand-to-mouth ex-hippie in OLD JOY, Reichardt's characters, regardless of life circumstances, are deeply and richly human. There may be no other living filmmaker who so fully realizes Roger Ebert's assertion that "movies are the most powerful empathy machine in all the arts." All of which is to say nothing of her films' painterly cinematography, naturalistic and immersive sound design, and Reichardt's knack of scouting the perfect space for every scene, often in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. Reichardt and her work have been honored at the Cannes Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival, the BFI MEEK'S CUTOFF London Film Festival, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and more.
