We welcome your comments - Peter Kokh, Editor, [email protected] SPACEPORT & ROCKET NEWS Work completed on Chinese satellite launch center on Hainan Island http://www.spacedaily.com/reports/Work_completed_on_satellite_launch_center_in_Hainan_999.html OCT. 21, 2014 - Construction of the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center in Hainan province, China's fourth and most advanced space launch center, has been completed and it will soon become operational. • The center will handle next-generation rockets and space station modules. • Building work began in 2009. • Situated on the northeast coast of Hainan, about 60 km from Haikou, the provincial capital, the center is the country's first coastal satellite launch base. • At, about 19 degrees north of the equator, it is suitable for launching geosynchronous satellites, heavy satellites, large space station components and lunar and interplanetary missions. • To date, the nation's most widely used space facility is the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert. The other two centers are in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, and in Xichang, Sichuan province. • The location will give Wenchang an unparalleled advantage compared with the other three centers. • A satellite launched from Wenchang will have fuel savings of about 15% compared with launches from the Xichang, as its latitude makes for a shorter time from transitory orbit to geosynchronous orbit • Another significant advantage is that rockets' payloads can be increased, to carry heavier satellites. • As the new center faces the sea to the south and east, there is also no danger of debris from launch vehicles falling into residential areas. Liftof was from the Satish Dhawan Space Center. The GSLV Mk.III rocket is a completely new 3rd generation vehicle.     Glossary Glossary Albedo A measure of an object’s reflectivity. A pure white reflecting surface has an albedo of 1.0 (100%). A pitch-black, nonreflecting surface has an albedo of 0.0. The Moon is a fairly dark object with a combined albedo of 0.07 (reflecting 7% of the sunlight that falls upon it). The albedo range of the lunar maria is between 0.05 and 0.08. The brighter highlands have an albedo range from 0.09 to 0.15. Anorthosite Rocks rich in the mineral feldspar, making up much of the Moon’s bright highland regions. Aperture The diameter of a telescope’s objective lens or primary mirror. Apogee The point in the Moon’s orbit where it is furthest from the Earth. At apogee, the Moon can reach a maximum distance of 406,700 km from the Earth. Apollo The manned lunar program of the United States. Between July 1969 and December 1972, six Apollo missions landed on the Moon, allowing a total of 12 astronauts to explore its surface. Asteroid A minor planet. A large solid body of rock in orbit around the Sun. Banded crater A crater that displays dusky linear tracts on its inner walls and/or floor. 250 Basalt A dark, fine-grained volcanic rock, low in silicon, with a low viscosity. Basaltic material fills many of the Moon’s major basins, especially on the near side. Glossary Basin A very large circular impact structure (usually comprising multiple concentric rings) that usually displays some degree of flooding with lava. The largest and most conspicuous lava- flooded basins on the Moon are found on the near side, and most are filled to their outer edges with mare basalts.

    SkyandTelescope.com The Lunar 100 By Charles A. Wood Just about every telescope user is familiar with French comet hunter Charles Messier's catalog of fuzzy objects. Messier's 18th-century listing of 109 galaxies, clusters, and nebulae contains some of the largest, brightest, and most visually interesting deep-sky treasures visible from the Northern Hemisphere. Little wonder that observing all the M objects is regarded as a virtual rite of passage for amateur astronomers. But the night sky offers an object that is larger, brighter, and more visually captivating than anything on Messier's list: the Moon. Yet many backyard astronomers never go beyond the astro-tourist stage to acquire the knowledge and understanding necessary to really appreciate what they're looking at, and how magnificent and amazing it truly is. Perhaps this is because after they identify a few of the Moon's most conspicuous features, many amateurs don't know where Many Lunar 100 selections are plainly visible in this image of the full Moon, while others require to look next. a more detailed view, different illumination, or favorable libration. S&T: Gary The Lunar 100 list is an attempt to provide Moon lovers with Seronik something akin to what deep-sky observers enjoy with the Messier catalog: a selection of telescopic sights to ignite interest and enhance understanding. Presented here is a selection of the Moon's 100 most interesting regions, craters, basins, mountains, rilles, and domes. I challenge observers to find and observe them all and, more important, to consider what each feature tells us about lunar and Earth history.

WHITTET Department of Physics, Applied Physics and Astronomy, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY 12180, U.S.A. (Received 19 August 1996) Abstract. I review the relative importance of internal and external sources of prebiotic molecules on Earth at the time of life's origin 3.7 Gyr ago. The ef®ciency of synthesis in the Earth's atmosphere was critically dependent on its oxidation state. If the early atmosphere was non-reducing and CO2- dominated, external delivery might have been the dominant source. Interplanetary dust grains and micrometeorites currently deliver carbonaceous matter to the Earth's surface at a rate of 3 5 7 10 kg/yr (equivalent to a biomass in 2 Gyr), but this may have been as high as 5 10 kg/yr (a biomass in only 10 Myr) during the epoch of late bombardment. Much of the incoming material is in the form of chemically inactive kerogens and amorphous carbon; but if the Earth once had a dense (10-bar) atmosphere, small comets rich in a variety of prebiotic molecules may have been suf®ciently air-braked to land non-destructively. Lingering uncertainties regarding the impact history of the Earth and the density and composition of its early atmosphere limit our ability to draw ®rm conclusions. 1. Introduction In at least one sense, a connection between the Universe at large and life in our small corner of it is inevitable. The hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and other elements that make up our bodies and other living things were created billions of years ago in the interiors of stars and, in the case of hydrogen, in the the Big Bang itself (see Trimble, 1997, in this volume for an eloquent review).

Current searches for transiting circumbinary planets concentrate on eclipsing binaries, and are therefore restricted to a small fraction of potential hosts. We investigate the concept of finding planets transiting non-eclipsing binaries, whose geometry would require mutually inclined planes. Using an N-body code we explore how the number and sequence of transits vary as functions of observing time and orbital parameters. The concept is then generalised thanks to a suite of simulated circumbinary systems. Binaries are constructed from radial-velocity surveys of the solar neighbourhood. They are then populated with orbiting gas giants, drawn from a range of distributions. The binary population is shown to be compatible with the Kepler eclipsing binary catalogue, indicating that the properties of binaries may be as universal as the initial mass function. These synthetic systems produce transiting circumbinary planets occurring on both eclipsing and non-eclipsing binaries. Simulated planets transiting eclipsing binaries are compared with published Kepler detections. We find 1) that planets transiting non-eclipsing binaries are probably present in the Kepler data; 2) that observational biases alone cannot account for the observed over-density of circumbinary planets near the stability limit, which implies a physical pile-up; and 3) that the distributions of gas giants orbiting single and binary stars are likely different.
