Guggenheim Museum, architect and urbanist Rem Koolhaas, and AMO, the think tank of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), will collaborate on a project exploring radical changes in the countryside, the vast nonurban areas of Earth. The project extends work underway by AMO / Koolhaas and students at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and will culminate in a rotunda exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in February 2020. Organized by Guggenheim Curator of Architecture and Digital Initiatives Troy Conrad Therrien, Founding Partner of OMA Rem Koolhaas, and AMO Director Samir Bantal, Countryside: Future of the World (working title) will present speculations about tomorrow through insights into the countryside of today. He is the founding director of the Center for the Study of the Built Environment in Amman. Dr. al-Asad studied architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and history of architecture at Harvard University, before taking post-doctoral research positions at Harvard and at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. He has taught at the University of Jordan, Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was the Alan K. and Leonarda Laing Distinguished Visiting Professor. He was also adjunct professor at Carleton University in Ottawa. Dr. al-Asad has published in both Arabic and English on the architecture of the Islamic world, in books and academic and professional journals. He is the author of Old Houses of Jordan: Amman 1920-1950 (1997) and Contemporary Architecture and Urbanism in the Middle East (2012); and co-author (with Ghazi Bisheh and Fawzi Zayadine) of The Umayyads: The Rise of Islamic Art (2000) and (with Sahel Al Hiyari and Álvaro Siza) Sahel Al Hiyari Projects (2005).     COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING ANNUAL REPORT ACADEMIC YEAR 2008 – 2009 The word is out…. It is a true pleasure to submit this annual report. We have many success stories to report, and we certainly had a lot of fun working on those, but we also had substantial challenges; we all did. In our February issue of e-cap we acknowledged that “every challenge is an opportunity” and that creative minds are particularly well equipped to take advantage of such opportunities. Today we want to celebrate the fact that in spite of financial uncertainty we have been able to continue to move forward in an aggressive quest to take our college to the next level. A fundamental move in that quest has been to build a “dream team” for the college’s departmental leadership. Last fall we welcomed Prof. Mahesh Senagala as our new Chair in the Department of Architecture, this summer we have been blessed with the arrival of Prof. Michael Burayidi as our new Chair in the Department of Urban Planning, and before it gets too cold in January we will be joined by Professor Jody Naderi as our new Chair in the Department of Landscape Architecture. I don’t know of any other college of architecture and planning in the nation with a stronger leadership team. We have adopted the structure of our University’s Strategic Plan and in such a way promote integration and synergy through all our units. We invite you to review this report and share in our excitement and enthusiasm. This is a great time to be at CAP.

    Scottish Parliament Building Client: Location: Edinburgh, Scotland Date: Typology: In 1998 EMBT won the bid to design the new Edinburgh Parliament building. This close tie to the site and its setting would, when the adjacent distillery is demolished, enable the generation of multiple perspective lines on the city. Intentionally, a contrast is sought, a conceptual distance, between the new construction and Holyrood Palace, the twelfth-century royal residence that has been renovated many times. Unlike the palace, which dominates the landscape, the new Scottish Parliament drops literally into the hillside terrain, the lowest part of Arthur’s Seat, and appears to sprout from the living stone.
