It suggests that the movement's repeated anomalies, denial of heritage, privileging of vegetarianism, and other concessions to bloody culture, restrict rather than liberate the full subversionary and revelatory potential of liberationist discourse, and with representation and strategy implications. ‘Only the profoundest cultural needs … initially caused adult man [sic] to continue to drink cow milk through life’.1 In The Social Construction of Nature, Klaus Eder develops a useful concept of two cultures - the bloody and the bloodless. He understands the ambivalence of modernity and the relationship to nature as resulting from the perpetuation of a precarious equilibrium between the ‘bloodless’ tradition from within Judaism and the ‘bloody’ tradition of ancient Greece. In Genesis, killing entered the world after the fall from grace and initiated a complex and hierarchically-patterned system of food taboos regulating distance between nature and culture. But, for Eder, it is in Israel that the reverse process also begins, in the taboo on killing. This ‘civilizing’ process replaces the prevalent ancient world practice of 1 Calvin. W. (2010) Step-by-Step Modularity – a Roadmap for Building Service Development Lean Construction Journal 2010 pp 17-29 Step-by-Step Modularity – a Roadmap for Building Service Development Martin Lennartsson1, Anders Björnfot2 Abstract Research Question/Hypothesis: Modularity in 3D can serve as a catalyst for change, towards a more industrial practice of building services in housing construction. Purpose: This paper explores and expands on Fines modularity model and demonstrates it with the development of building services in industrial housing. Research Design/Method: Empirical data were obtained from a joint product development initiative of a shaft and an inner ceiling, involving five industrial housing companies. Findings: The proposed framework is applicable in designing building service modules. The framework is applied by identifying and evaluating the key dimension (product, process or supply chain), followed by stepwise evaluation of the remaining dimensions. Limitations: The research considers development of building services in industrialised housing construction on the Swedish construction market. Implications: The research provides a roadmap for modularisation in construction, i.e. how to initiate a module development and how to analyse its potential. The methodology provides valuable insights in the complex building service trade. Value for practitioners: Experiences from an actual product development initiative in industrialised housing are presented, a process in which five companies jointly developed two building service modules. The roadmap works as an action plan, potentially applicable to other complex construction products/components. COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING ANNUAL REPORT ACADEMIC YEAR 2008 – 2009 The word is out…. It is a true pleasure to submit this annual report. We have many success stories to report, and we certainly had a lot of fun working on those, but we also had substantial challenges; we all did. In our February issue of e-cap we acknowledged that “every challenge is an opportunity” and that creative minds are particularly well equipped to take advantage of such opportunities. Today we want to celebrate the fact that in spite of financial uncertainty we have been able to continue to move forward in an aggressive quest to take our college to the next level. A fundamental move in that quest has been to build a “dream team” for the college’s departmental leadership. Last fall we welcomed Prof. Mahesh Senagala as our new Chair in the Department of Architecture, this summer we have been blessed with the arrival of Prof. Michael Burayidi as our new Chair in the Department of Urban Planning, and before it gets too cold in January we will be joined by Professor Jody Naderi as our new Chair in the Department of Landscape Architecture. I don’t know of any other college of architecture and planning in the nation with a stronger leadership team. We have adopted the structure of our University’s Strategic Plan and in such a way promote integration and synergy through all our units. We invite you to review this report and share in our excitement and enthusiasm. This is a great time to be at CAP. -

DISAGGREGATING THE SCARE FROM THE GREENS Lee Hall*† INTRODUCTION When the Vermont Law Review graciously asked me to contribute to this Symposium focusing on the tension between national security and fundamental values, specifically for a segment on ecological and animal- related activism as “the threat of unpopular ideas,” it seemed apt to ask a basic question about the title: Why should we come to think of reverence for life or serious concern for the Earth that sustains us as “unpopular ideas”? What we really appear to be saying is that the methods used, condoned, or promoted by certain people are unpopular. So before we proceed further, intimidation should be disaggregated from respect for the environment and its living inhabitants. Two recent and high-profile law-enforcement initiatives have viewed environmental and animal-advocacy groups as threats in the United States. These initiatives are the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) prosecution and Operation Backfire. The former prosecution targeted SHAC—a campaign to close one animal-testing firm—and referred also to the underground Animal Liberation Front (ALF).1 The latter prosecution *. Email:[email protected] ABSTRACT Based on the analysis of the traditional automobile design mode, the paper puts forward that the concept of changing from simple function design to product life cycle design. Moreover, the life cycle design theory based on modular design can better serve the subsequent links of automobile manufacturing in the design stage. Combined with the wide application of CAD / CAE technology in automobile design, the concept of automobile modular design based on life cycle theory is explored. Automatic Mechanical System Dynamics Analysis Software (ADAMS) can realize the functions of parametric modeling, design and analysis. In addition, parametric simulation analysis can analyze the influence of design parameters on vehicle performance. By taking the vehicle model created in ADAMS/Car and Vehicle handling analysis as an example, the combination of various module types and relevant parameters can quickly realize the module variant and model expansion. The modular design of automobile based on life cycle theory can analyze the most dangerous operation conditions, obtain the optimal prototype model and the best parameter setting, shorten the design cycle,reduce development cost and improve the product performance. This kind of automobile design mode,which integrates advanced theory, mature design means and excellent computer software will become the future development direction and trend of automobile design. -

Introduction Landscape engineering thinks about the application of mathematics and science to the creation of convenient outdoor living areas. These outdoor living areas are a consequence of the design and the construction process made feasible by landscape architects through landscape contractors. Beside landscape engineer’s interested in containing site grading and drainage, earthwork calculations, and watersheds [1,12,13]. Landscape engineers employ engineering knowledge when designing and building spaces. They demand to know how to interpret contour maps which shows elevations and surface configuration by means of contour line sand and also consider how to interpret 2-D images, compute angles and grading requirements for pavements, parking lots, bridges, roads and other structures. Beside they understand the amount of fill needed for specific areas and figure out how water runoff and flow should affect their designs. Developing and improving for landscape engineering [1,3,13,14] 1. Stormwater management: building up bioswales, landscape materials used to gather and install runoff, rain gardens and porous asphalt. 2. Mitigation of the urban heat island effect: diminishing the quantity of paved surfaces, building up green roofs and green walls, and using building materials with low reflectivity. 3. Wildlife habitat: protecting habitat and building up green roofs and rain gardens. 4. Social spaces: areas for walking, biking, gathering and eating. 5. Transportation: growth expanding pedestrian accessibility, limiting vehicle speeds and encouraging the use of public transportation.
