  • Büro Ole Scheeren Unveils Design for Guardian Art Center in Beijing
PRESS RELEASE March 9, 2015 A fusion of time and a synthesis of China's rich cultural history: Büro Ole Scheeren unveils design for Guardian Art Center in Beijing Located in close proximity to the Forbidden City, construction is underway on the new headquarters of China’s oldest art auction house. Embedded in the historic fabric of central Beijing, the building will form a new hybrid institution between museum, event space, and cultural lifestyle center. Ole Scheeren’s design for the Guardian Art Center carefully inscribes the building into the surrounding context, in a sensitive architectural interpretation that fuses history and tradition with a contemporary vision for the future of a cultural art space. The ‘pixelated’ volumes of the lower portion of the building subtly refer to the adjacent historic urban fabric, echoing the grain, color and intricate scale of Beijing’s hutongs, while the upper portion of the building responds to the larger scale of the surrounding contemporary city. This floating ‘ring’ forms an inner courtyard to the building and further resonates with the prevalent typology of the courtyard houses in Beijing. “The Art Center will be a tangible link between past, present, and future. It celebrates history and tradition while also representing an important social and civic amenity for the capital” says China Guardian’s Chairman and Founder, Chen Dongsheng. “The design of the building shares its qualities with those of Guardian. It is profound, simple, and clean, and exudes a sense of stability and trustworthiness” adds Mr. Chen. “Ole Scheeren’s work is rooted in culture and history; it reflects the culture of the site and the culture and customs of the Chinese people.

  • Rem Koolhaas and Álvaro Siza in Asia: an Architectural Comparison
Athens Journal of Architecture - Volume 1, Issue 3 – Pages 221-236 Rem Koolhaas and Álvaro Siza in Asia: An Architectural Comparison By Shuenn-Ren Liou Rem Koolhaas (1944- ) and Álvaro Siza (1933- ) are two of the most significant living architects in contemporary architecture. They have been devoted to architectural creation for a long period of time and produced a great number of works of high quality and originality. It is not surprising that Koolhaas and Siza came to Asia for architectural practice in 2002 and 2005, respectively. In the past few decades, research on Koolhaas’ and Siza’s architectural works mainly focused on their works in Europe and America. Although there were some individual reports on Koolhaas’ and Siza’s activities and works in Asia, they lacked of systematic investigation and analysis, not to mention cross region comparisons. Being highly respected, the modification and/or transformation of their design ideas, thinking, processing, and making, i.e. their architectural strategies including design strategies and management strategies for Asian cultures and regions constitute important sources for exploration in the architectural history and theory. After the investigation on Siza’s architectural works in Asia (Liou, 2012, 2013, 2014a, 2014b), the present study attempts to extend the accumulated experiences and analyse the work of Koolhaas as a case subject, and furthermore to conduct comparative analysis on the style and design of the two architects. Specifically, in this paper, Koolhaas’ design strategies and management strategies for his Asian architectural works are studied. His design strategies include OMA’s design process, public urban space, architectural typology (high-rise building and theater), skin material, and plane material.

  • Büro Ole Scheeren Announces the Shenzhen Wave, a Transformational Headquarters for ZTE and New Symbol of China’S Next Digital Revolution
The Future of Workspace: Büro Ole Scheeren announces the Shenzhen Wave, a transformational headquarters for ZTE and new symbol of China’s next digital revolution. Shenzhen Wave reimagines the urban cityscape as an interactive and integrated spatial ecosystem of the future hovering above ground level. Shenzhen Wave by Ole Scheeren © Buro-OS Shenzhen, China - August 2020 - Büro Ole Scheeren today reveals the Shenzhen Wave, the new headquarters for ZTE, one of China’s leading telecommunications and technology companies. Recently approved by the mayor and planning department, the project is located at the entry to the Shenzhen Bay Super HQ masterplan in southern China. Anticipating possibilities into the future, the Wave is a building driven by a rigorous commitment to performance, placing staff, users and the wider public at the center of an interactive and integrated spatial ecosystem of the future. Imaging a new archetype for the urban workplace, the distinctive design for the tech leader has been conceived as a dynamic, living organism, hovering just above ground level, that generates innovation, cutting-edge ideas and new ways of working and living together. The Shenzhen Wave is conceived of as a piece of city, responding to its context, and integrating with the local community. As the building floats gracefully above street-level, a new plaza beneath the suspended volume connects the waterfront to the urban fabric behind and gives public space back to the city. On the other side of the plaza, a landscaped mound and amphitheater create the ‘Culture Node', bringing light, activity and people down to the lower levels, where an exhibition space and cafeteria are located.
