  • The Louis I. Kahn Collection
Solomon’s Success: Trenton Bath House to be Saved On Friday, August 11th at 2:54 PM EST, news flashed across the internet and around the world that the Bath House and Day Camp pavilions designed by Louis Kahn in the mid 1950s for the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Ewing, New Jersey, would be preserved. The message was sent from architectural historian, DOCOMOMO US member, and Kahn scholar Susan Solomon. She is the leader of a ten-year struggle to preserve Kahn’s work in Ewing and literally wrote the book on Kahn and the Bath House (Louis I. Kahn’s Trenton Jewish Community Center, Princeton Architectural Press, 2000). Design of the JCC was the first major project of Kahn’s private practice. He acknowledged this work as inspiring a fundamental and profound shift in his architectural thinking. Kahn “discovered himself” after designing this project, considering the Trenton Bath House as his first opportunity to work out the concept of served and serving spaces. The archi- tectural fundamentals he discovered is Exterior, Trenton Bath House, recognizable in every building he designed subsequently. Trenton, NJ Kahn’s Bath House and pool (1955) and four Day Camp pavilions (photo: Susan Solomon) (1957) have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and protected by a Ewing preservation ordinance since 1984. Due to extensive deterioration of the Day Camp pavilions, the JCC sought approval for the demolition of two of the four pavilions in 1966 but withdrew the request when the preservation community strongly objected. Although the Day Camp pavilions were not demolished, wooden barricades and wire fencing were erected to prevent access; deterioration accelerated.

    7. Another Museum (Display and Desire) The search for the real, in particular for real relations, and specifically the search for real relations between objects and people, takes on the form of utopia. Whether it be works of art (objects that are primarily non-relational), or products of the disenfranchised (objects of desperate survival), or ill-begotten treasures (objects collected in order to make the past present to the undeserving, taking away from others the possibility to figure the future), author Roger M Buergel, interpreting the displays of architect Lina Bo Bardi in the light of migration, and critic Pablo Lafuente, reading a work by artist Lukas Duwenhögger, demonstrate that things will, given the right circumstances, elicit subjectivity in spectatorship. agency, ambivalence, analysis: approaching the museum with migration in mind — 177 The Migration of a Few Things We Call − But Don’t Need to Call − Artworks → roger m buergel → i In 1946, 32-year-old Italian architect Lina Bo Bardi migrated to Brazil. She was accompanying her husband, Pietro Maria Bardi, who was a self- taught intellectual, gallerist and impresario of Italy’s architectural avant garde during Mussolini’s reign. Bardi had been entrusted by Assis de Chateaubriand, a Brazilian media tycoon and politician, with creating an art institution of international standing in São Paulo. Te São Paulo Art Museum (MASP) had yet to fnd an appropriate building to house its magnifcent collection of sculptures and paintings by artists ranging from Raphael to Manet. Te recent acquisitions were chosen by Bardi himself on an extended shopping spree funded by Assis Chateaubriand, who had taken out a loan from Chase Manhattan Bank in an impoverished, chaotic post-war Europe.

  • Parametric Articulation
Parametric Articulation A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati Division of Research and Advanced Studies for partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Architecture School of Architecture and Interior Design 2013 By Andrew Newman B.F.A Environmental Design, MICA, 2008 Committee Chairs: Ming Tang Thesis Abstract In the world today, actual concerns for human experience and climate change obligate professional disciplines related to the building industry to explore more innovative design solutions. With the scarce allocation of capital the practice of architecture is in the process of adapting to a more economical process of utilizing parametric tools to design, document, analyze and fabricate building facades. Parametric tools, however, can only aid a designer in the process of achieving the qualitative features of a demanded certain spatial experience. Design and analysis of a building's enclosure system is a fundamental first step in the design process to achieve the qualitative and quantitative benefits of comfort, protection and reduction in energy consumption. As we move forward into information-based future, it is important for the architecture practice to utilize the technological advances in industrial design, computational design and rapid fabrication processes. These advances bring with them the tools needed for architects to innovate, analyze and construct new dynamic enclosure systems for the future. The Architectural Problem Traditional methods of cladding and enclosing structures responsively tend to produce uniformly articulated facades. The character of building articulation, which is ultimately based on orientation, climate, and interior comfort, varies in terms of materials and methods.
