Lismore City is situated between World Heritage listed rainforest and the pristine beaches of Evans Head, Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay. This area is blessed by year round sun, a tropical climate and a short winter, making it perfect for outdoor activities. Facility Overview Currently undergoing redevelopment, Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is an acute referral hospital of 260 beds, serving a population of approximately 170,000 people on the Far North Coast of NSW. The hospital has a busy 19 bed Emergency Department, 9 bed ICU and a 4 bed Coronary Care Unit. A wide range of medical and surgical specialties and sub-specialties are provided, as well as the majority of speciality services. LBH plays an important role in providing high level specialist services on a regional level including: Access to formalised Retrieval Service providing service over a 300km radius. Specialist emergency and elective surgical services including Vascular and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery. Renal Dialysis and Renal Dialysis home-based training. LBH is an affiliated teaching hospital for medical students from the University of Newcastle, University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of Western Sydney, Bond University, University of Queensland and Griffith University. The hospital has a strong commitment to teaching and support for its JMOs. LBH has rosters based on the JMO term dates. The Emergency Medicine roster is administered by the Director of Emergency Medicine. These are administered by the JMO Manager in conjunction with the department directors in each discipline. Junior Medical Officers participate in the after-hours on call roster of 1 on call shift per fortnight, and 1 weekend day every four weeks, or as the service requires. Computer facilities are provided by the “State Wide” computer services. Video-conferencing facilities are available on site. Junior Medical Officers also have access to the JMO Lounge with computer terminals, TV and recreational facilities in their own private space. Single and shared accommodation is available close to the hospital. Recreational and educational facilities include a swimming pool and library. Lismore is situated close to world renowned beaches (Byron Bay & Lennox Head) and in the heart of world heritage listed sub-tropical rainforests Term rotations PGY 1- Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, Acute Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Renal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Cardiology, Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Psychiatry and Relief PGY2+ - Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, Acute Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Renal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Cardiology, Haematology/Oncology, Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Intensive Care Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Relief Training LBH offers Monday to Friday education sessions, on the ward training, modern library facilities and University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH) facilities. Weekly clinical discussions are presented by UCRH each Friday. Lismore Medical Regional Training Hub (LMRTH) The LMRTH has Clinical Directors of Training, a Manager and dedicated Medical Education Support Officers in the areas of Medicine / Critical Care / Surgery across Student, Prevocational and Vocational Training. Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) has strong commitment & capacity to sustain vocational training for junior doctors from internship to completion of advanced training. Dedicated to the training needs and requirements of all Junior Medical Officer Training and Education, with support of the prerequisites for advanced training, the LMRTH ensures medical students training in Northern NSW (currently >90 per annum) are provided further training opportunities in the area, allowing them to continue junior doctor training & pursue specialisation rurally without diminishing career options. The LMRTH is a collaborative between University of Sydney, UCRH and NNSWLHD, successfully linking the medical student training already delivered in the region to NNSWLHD’s prevocational & vocational training pathways delivering vertical integration of medical student, prevocational & vocational training for a full end-to-end rural medical training pathway. LBH has Vocational Trainees in Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics, Medicine, Haematology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Orthopaedics, Surgery, Psychiatry, ICU, Anaesthetics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. LBH also accommodates Basic Physician Training, Surgical Training, and training positions in Gastroenterology, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Emergency Medicine. In addition, the LMRTH takes Junior Medical Officers undertaking GP extended skills training via the Rural Generalist Training Program. .
