Trauma informed care is a concept that acknowledges the prevalence and impact of trauma histories in peoples’ lives. Health professionals need to be aware of trauma history and the impact trauma has on peoples’ lives. They need to respond appropriately whilst supporting people to get the help they need without inadvertently retraumatising people in the process. Karen Healy B.Soc.Wk. (Hons. ) Ph.D., National President of the Australian Association of Social Workers, Professor of Social Work at the University of Queensland & a Board Director of The Benevolent Society. Karen’s professional interests are in the theory and practice of social work, child and family social work and in professional leadership. She has 28 years’ experience as a practitioner, educator and researcher. Over the last two decades, biomedical technology has revolutionised our understanding of human health and illness. Many of the practical, ethical and legal implications of these technologies are unresolved. Karen’s presentation will - outline how the revolution in biomedical technology is reshaping health and welfare services - critically examine the impact of this revolution on bio-psycho-social approaches to health care - discuss how social workers might critically and constructively respond to the biomedical revolution in ways that continue to advance the psycho-social dimensions of service users’ lives.
