Cytisus jankae LC Taxonomic Authority: Velen. Global Assessment Regional Assessment Region: Global Endemic to region Synonyms Common Names Chamaecytisus janka (Velen.) Rothm. Upper Level Taxonomy Kingdom: PLANTAE Phylum: TRACHEOPHYTA Class: MAGNOLIOPSIDA Order: FABALES Family: LEGUMINOSAE Lower Level Taxonomy Rank: Infra- rank name: Plant Hybrid Subpopulation: Authority: Cytisus jankae was described as related to Cytisus tmoleus and Cytisus austriacus and it has been reported that Cytisus pindicolus Halacsy of Albany and Greece is a form of the same species (Cristofolini 1991). However, Cytisus pindicola Halacsy is a recognized synonym of C. austriacus and therefore not included on this assessment. There are minor segregates from Cytisus that persist in local floristics such as Chamaecytisus, therefore the species has been found in Floras and reports as Chamaecytisus jankae (Velen.) Rothm. In this assessment has been followed Polhill and Van Wyk (2005), who in Legumes of the World re-included Chamaecytisus in Cytisus following Cristofolini (1991); Käss and Wink (1997); Cubas et al. (2002) and Wink and Mohamed (2003). General Information Distribution The species is endemic to the Balkan mountains (Făgăraş et al. 2010), Bulgaria, former Yugoslavia (Serbia), Romania and Albania. However, it has been described as endemic on the Grasslands of Romania Final report on National Grasslands Inventory 2000-2003 (Anca et al. 2004). Total Population Size Minimum Population Size: Maximum Population Size: Habitat and Ecology C. jankae is a dwarf shrub described as orophyte. The species has been reported as characteristic from Western Pontic feathergrass steppes, pastureland, natural or secondary grass communities on plain terrain along the West Black Sea Coast and soil developed to different stages on limestone bedrock. It is one of the diagnostic species from a new association Paeonio tenuifoliae-Koelerietum brevis in Bulgaria and from the Myrsiniteto-Ischaemetum association in Mt. Suva, Serbia (Todorova and Tzonev 2010). System Movement pattern Crop Wild Relative Terrestrial Freshwater Nomadic Congregatory/Dispersive Is the species a wild relative of a crop? Marine Migratory Altitudinally migrant Growth From Definition Shrub - small Perennial shrub small (<1m) or dwarf shrub, also termed a Chamaephyte (<1m) Threats There are no known major threats to this species. Past Present Future 13 None Conservation Measures It has been listed as Rare on the The Red List of vascular plants from Romanian grasslands (Anca et al. 2004) and as Rare and threatened in the Black Sea coastal area (Făgăraş et al. 2010). The ecoregion has a good network of protected areas, however the species has not been reported from within them. Seeds have yet to be collected as an ex situ conservation effort. It is not known to occur in Botanical Gardens. Unknown Trend in the level of wild offtake/harvest in relation to total wild population numbers over the last five years: Unknown Trend in the amount of offtake/harvest produced through domestication/cultivation over the last five years: Unknown CITES status: Not listed IUCN Red Listing Red List Assessment: (using 2001 IUCN system) Least Concern (LC) Red List Criteria: Date Last Seen (only for EX, EW or Possibly EX species): Is the species Possibly Extinct? Possibly Extinct Candidate? Rationale for the Red List Assessment Although it has been listed as rare and threatened in the Flora of Romania, throughout its range it is not believed to meet the threshold for a threatened category, therefore, C. jankae is listed as Least Concern. Further surveys are needed to define the distribution range and determine if the species does occur in protected areas.
