When Subandrio went to China in 1965, Nasution suggested that if China really wanted to help Indonesia, she should cut off supplies to Hongkong. According to Nasution, BK was serious about Maphilindo but Aidit convinced him that he was a world leader, not just a regional leader. In 1960 BK became head of Peperti which made him very influential in the AD with authority over the regional commanders. In 1962 N was replaced by Yani. According to the original concept, N would become Menteri Hankam/Panglima ABRI. However Omar Dhani wrote a letter to BK (probably proposed by Subandrio or BK himself). Sukarno (chief of police) supported Omar Dhani secara besar). Only Martadinata defended to original plan while Yani was 'plin-plan'. Meanwhile Nasution had proposed Gatot Subroto as the new Kasad but BK rejected this because he felt that he could not menguasai Gatot. Nas then proposed the two Let.Gens. - Djatikusuma and Hidayat but they were rejected by BK.

DIVISIONS AND POWER IN THE INDONESIAN NATIONAL PARTY, 1965-1966* Angus McIntyre The principal division which split the PNI into two sharply opposed factions in 1965-1966 had its origins as far back as 1957, when the PKI made spectacular advances in large part at PNI expense in the 1957 regional elections in Java and South Sumatra. In Central Java, where the PKI supplanted the PNI as the region's strongest party (based on the 1955 general elections results) , the PNI reaction at the time was most outspoken. Hadisubeno, the regional party chairman, blamed the party's poor showing on its past association with the PKI1 and accordingly urged the party's central executive council to re view this relationship. He suggested that the party consider forming an alliance with the Masjumi (the modernist Islamic party) and the Nahdatul Ulama (NU, the traditional Islamic party).2 A conference of the Central Java PNI passed a resolution forbidding cooperation with the PKI.3 These acts were interpreted by many as a slap at President Sukarno,** who had made it increasingly clear in the preceding months that to oppose the PKI was to oppose him as well; however, the party's central leadership, no less hostile to the PKI, was unwilling to risk such an interpretation and thereby further impair its relations with Sukarno. Indeed, only a few months before, Sukarno had indicated strong displeasure with the PNI in his address to the party on the occasion of its thirtieth anniversary celebrations. He implied that PNI members had lost their commitment to the goal of a socialist or marhaenist5 society, the realization of which had been his very reason * The writer would like to express his gratitude to the Jajasan Siswa Lokantara Indonesia for providing him with the opportunity to con- duct research in Indonesia in 1966 and 1967 and to the Myer Founda tion for giving him financial assistance in 1967.

BAB II KERANGKA TEORI A. Deskripsi Teori 1. Hizbul Wathan a. Dua tahun kemudian, K.H.A.

  • Kata Pengantar

  • The Peta and My Relations with the Japanese: a Correction of Sukarno1s Autobiography*
THE PETA AND MY RELATIONS WITH THE JAPANESE: A CORRECTION OF SUKARNO1S AUTOBIOGRAPHY* Raden Gatot Mangkupradja I was lying in bed feeling the effects of the medicine re cently injected into my body by Dr. Sie Wie Boo. Suddenly there was the voice of a guest, and after knocking at the door Brother Rasiban came into my room. He took a seat near my bed, and after inquiring as to my health he said, holding up a volume, "Well, Pak Gatot, I !ve just received this book--Bung Karnofs autobiography— from my son Supena. Please read it, Pak Gatot, and see if what Mrs. Cindy Adams has written is correct. And . above all see if what Bung Karno has told her is true. Your name is often mentioned in the book." "Brother Rasiban," I said. "Ifve heard of this book before and of my name often being mentioned in it. But I ’ve never seen a copy, let alone read it. How could I possibly afford a book which costs two hundred and twenty-five rupiah?' Thank you for it anyway," I added, "I’ll read it." On that day, however, I did not feel at all like reading; only on the next did I begin. As usual, I skimmed through the book, skipping the pages which did not catch my attention, before I settled down to a more careful reading. From this superficial glance I was able to see that Bung Karno had not told the en tire truth. He had put forward as facts things he had only made up, and he had exaggerated in places.

  • Rhere Were Also Rumours in Early 1967 (Eg in El Bahar) About the Brawidjaya
Liem Bian Kee (Jusuf Wanandi) 11 February 1971 At first no one in Kap-Gestapu thought of opposing BK, including Subchan. It was only in February when BK criticised the demonstators along with Chaeral and Subandrio at a Front Nasional meeting that they became anti-BK. Chaerul Saleh was strongly anti-PK!. But he was not strongly with the Kap-Gestapu. In November Ali Murtopo went to him for money for the big Kap-Gestapu rally. He asked Chaerul whether he was pro or anti-Suharto. Eventually Chaerul gave the money. Earlier he had refused LBK when LBK asked. Various Partindo people such as Amunanto (and one other who was more important?) were behind the ideal of the Front Nasional Gaya Baru, which was to be organised like the army with Seksi/lntell, Seksi II? Etc. It was to be the Barisan Soekarno setjara fisik. Ultimately the political parties would e greatly weakened in such a Front. This was put forward by Chaerul in the rally in Feb 66. Ruslan was a rival of Subandrio. Unlike Chaerul, Ruslan cultivated good relations with Yani. After the coup, Ruslan was often used by Suharto to make approaches quietly to Sukarno, especially in the field of foreign policy. When Nasution was dismissed from Cabinet in Feb 66, Suharto told him to refuse; however Nasution was not prepared to force a showdown. Thus Suharto was forced to go slowly. The SUAD decided on a plan to metjulik and maybe kill Subandrio, Jusuf Muda Dalam and some other ministers. Suharto was present at the meeting.

  • GOVERNING H{AJJ: Politics of Islamic Pilgrimage Services in Indonesia Prior to Reformasi Era*
GOVERNING H{AJJ: Politics of Islamic Pilgrimage Services in Indonesia Prior to Reformasi Era* Moch. Nur Ichwan Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University, Yogyakarta - Indonesia Abstract This article highlights that the h}ajj (Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca) involves not only religious devotion, but also religious tourism and its associated business, necessary to deal with massive parties of pilgrims, embracing trans-national relations, central and local governments, flight and other travel agencies, pilgrimage guidance units, catering agencies and hotels to the pilgrims themselves in its scope. The aim of this article is to analyse the politics of h}ajj services, which was carried out mainly through the placing of this pilgrimage under government control, leading to the assumption of its monopoly by the government during the New Order period. Although it will focus on Soeharto period, there will be some discussions on this subject during the colonial and early post-colonial periods to trace the genealogy of government control of h}ajj pilgrimage (and ‘umrah, known also as ‘small hajj} ’), especially during the New Order. The author argues that the complexities of h}ajj (and ‘umrah) services were not so much caused by religious aspect but rather by political and economic motives. Keywords: H{ajj, ‘Umrah, H{ajj service, politics, religious tourism. ––––––––––––––––– * I would like to thank Herman L. Beck and Abdullahi Ahmed An-Naim who read and gave critical comments on the earlier version of this article. Yet, the views expressed in this article belong solely to the author. Moch. Nur Ichwan A. Introduction The h}ajj (Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca) involves not only religious devotion, but also religious tourism and its associated business, necessary to deal with massive parties of pilgrims, embracing trans- national relations, central and local governments, flight and other travel agencies, pilgrimage guidance units, catering agencies and hotels to the pilgrims themselves in its scope.

  • Four Indonesian Cabinets Since October 1, 1965, with Scattered Data on Their Members' Organizational and Ethnic Affiliations, Age and Place of Birth
CONTINUITY AND CHANGE: Four Indonesian Cabinets Since October 1, 1965, with scattered data on their members' organizational and ethnic affiliations, age and place of birth. (Prepared by the Editors) One partial measure of the shifts in political power in Indo nesia since the abortive coup of October 1 is the altered composi tion of the official political elite — those persons holding ministerial rank. The changes in this official elite amply demon strate the post-coup gravitation of political power — formal as well as informal — to a new clustering of factions dominated prin cipally by the Indonesian army under General Suharto. At the same time, a study of these changes also suggests both the gradual pace of this political shift and its limits. It is noteworthy, for ex ample, that over 20 persons holding a ministerial-level position on October 1 still held such a position in the Aropera Cabinet formed some ten months later on July 28. In an effort to highlight these themes of continuity and change in the official elite, the editors have tried to present something more than a mere catalogue of the numerous alterations in the elite. Essentially what is given below are four cabinet lists — each representing a somewhat blurred, still photograph of the formal distribution of power in Indonesia at four key junctures in the dynamic process of developing a new political equilibrium. The first list serves as a benchmark. It shows the official elite of what is now known as the "Old Order" — the Guided Democ racy of President Sukarno — in its fullest and final formal incar nation on the eve of the coup.
