Buckman Deforestation, accelerated soil erosion, and land degradation are serious problems in Ethiopia. The uncontrolled removal of natural forests, demographic pressures and cyclical drought has aggravated the situation, resulting in massive environmental degradation anda serious threat to sustainable agriculture and forestry. To overcome these problems efforts have been made to launch an afforestation and conservation program; however,success to date has been limited. Thus, the main objective of this study is to findthe reasons for lack of success in tree planting in the Alemaya Basin both from biophysical and socio-economicperspectives. And, based on thisanalysis, to propose an alternative strategy for agroforestry for the Basin. The study has identified and characterized major land uses, socio-economic constraints and agricultural and forestry practices which have limited forestry development in the Alemaya Basin. To gather the necessary information for the study, existing information sources were reviewed.Two stage sampling was used for a land-usesurvey, and stratified random sampling for the socio-economic study. Decrease in farm size due to population increases, soil erosion, shortage of fuelwood and fodder for livestock and lack of appropriate extension service were found to be the major problems that affect sustainable production in the Aleinaya Basin. Agroforestry is one of the appropriate technologies to overcome some of the problems faced by the farmers in the AlemayaBasin. Thestudy proposeda desired state of sustainable agriculture and forestry for the Basin basedon population projections, agriculture and forest products needs, and stable or improved living standards fora 20 year planning period. Alley cropping with and without fertilizers was identified asa promising agroforestry technology. Its economic feasibility was assessed by estimating costs and returns both for traditional farming and alley cropping. This study aims to monitor and evaluate the objectives of the Gullele Botanic Gardens (GBG) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The following report advances the understanding of existing understory and tree species in GBG and aims to uncover various attributes of the conservation forest. To provide a baseline dataset for future research and management practices, this report focused on species composition and carbon stock analysis of the area. Species-specific allometric equations to estimate above-ground biomass for Juniperus procera and Eucalyptus globulus are applied in this study to test the restoration strategy and strength of applied allometry to estimate carbon stock of the conservation area. The equations and carbon stock of the forest were evaluated with the following hypothesis: Removal of E. globulus of greater than 35cm DBH would impact the carbon storage (Mg ha-1) significantly as compared to the overall estimate. May 2013 2 Abstract Forest conservation based on payments anchored to opportunity costs (OCs) is receiving increasing attention, including for international financial transfers for reduced emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD+). REDD+ emerged as a payment for environmental service (PES) approach in which conditional payments are made for demonstrable greenhouse gas emission reductions against a business-as-usual baseline. Quantitative assessments of the OCs incurred by forest users of these reductions are lacking. Existing studies are coarse, obscure the heterogeneity of OCs and do not consider how OCs may change over time. An integrated assessment of OCs and carbon benefits under a proposed community forest management (CFM) intervention linked to REDD+ is undertaken in Ethiopia. The OCs of land for the intervention are estimated through household survey and market valuation. Scenarios explore how OCs are likely to change over the intervention given qualitative conservation goals and available land-use change information.

Despite the importance of non-timber forest products (NTFP) in sustaining livelihood and poverty smoothening in rural communities, they are highly depleted and poorly conserved. Besides, conservation initiatives in Nigeria to date are rarely participatory. Even community forests, the main source of NTFP, are poorly conserved. Therefore, to enhance participatory conservation initiatives, this study determines the willingness of households in forest communities in the rainforest region of Nigeria to pay for systematic management of community forests using the contingent-valuation method. A multistage random-sampling technique was used in selecting 180 respondent households used for the study. The value-elicitation format used was discrete choice with open-ended follow-up questions. A Tobit model with sample selection was used in estimating the bid function. The findings show that some variables such as wealth category, occupation, number of years of schooling and number of females in a household positively and significantly influence willingness to pay. Gender (male-headed households), start price of the valuation, number of males in a household and distance from home to forests negatively and significantly influence willingness to pay. Incorporating these findings in initiatives to organize the local community in systematic management of community forests for NTFP conservation will enhance participation and hence poverty alleviation.

The oil was extracted from freshly collected flower petals of R. centifolia with petroleum ether using Soxhlet apparatus. Rosa centifolia showed 0.225% concrete oil and 0.128% yield of absolute oil. Some physico-chemical properties of the extracted oil like colour, refractive index, congealing point, optical rotation, specific gravity, acid number and ester number were determined and were found to be yellowish brown, 1.454 at 340C, 15°C, -32.50 to +54.21, 0.823 at 30oC, 14.10245 and 28.1876. High- resolution gas liquid chromatographic (HR-GLC) analysis of the essential oil of R. centifolia, showed the phenethyl alcohol, geranyl acetate, geraniol and linalool as major components whereas, benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and citronellyl acetate were detected at trace levels. Introduction A variety of roses are generally cultivated for home and garden beautification in many parts of the world. Its rich fragrance has perfumed human history for generations (Rose, 1999). Roses contain very little essential oil but it has a wide range of applications in many industries for the scenting and flavouring purposes. It is used as perfumer in soap and cosmetics and as a flavor in tea and liquors.

(Rosaceae) Mahmoud Fawzy Moustafa1,2* and Sulaiman Abdullah Alrumman1 1Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, King Khalid University, Abha, Saudi Arabia 2Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, South Valley University, Qena, Egypt Abstract: In vitro antimicrobial efficacy of seven solvent extracts from leaves and hips of Saudi Arabian weed Rosa abyssinica against a variety of human pathogenic bacteria and Candida species have been evaluated using well diffusion methods. Phytochemicals present in the leaves and hips of Rosa abyssinica has been characterized using Gas Chromatogram Mass spectrometry analysis. The extracts comparative efficacy against tested microbes gained from the fresh and dry leaves exhibited more prominent activity than fresh and dry hips. The methanol, chloroform, petroleum ether, acetone and diethyl ether extracts have a greater lethal effect on pathogenic microbes than hot water extracts, while cold-water extracts showed no activity. Twenty-four phytochemicals have been characterized from ethanol extract of the leaves of Rosa abyssinica and fifteen from hips by GC-MS. The major compounds detected in the leaves were squalene (38.21%), ethane, 1,1-diethoxy- (9.65%), β-D-glucopyranose, 1,6-anhydro- (8.55%), furfural (5.50%) and 2- furancarboxaldehyde 5-(hydroxymethyl)- (5.19%). The major compounds in the hips were 2-furancarboxaldehyde 5- (hydroxymethyl)- (51.27%), β-D-glucopyranose, 1,6-anhydro- (8.18%), 4H-pyran-4-one, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6- methyl- (7.42%), 2,5-furandione, dihydro-3-methylene- (6.79%) and furfural (5.99%). Current findings indicate that extract from leaves and hips of Rosa abyssinica and the bioactive components present could be used as pharmaceutical agents.

By combining different data sources such as satellite images, social surveys and historical documents, forest decline is de- scribed quantitatively and qualitatively and the main causes behind this process are identified. Forest decline in the study area is interpreted as the result of a combination of socio-political changes, economic activities, population growth, cultural patterns and agricultural developments while local conflicts over resour- ces also play an important role. The findings of this study reveal forest decline to be a continuous process associated with spatial fragmentation and location specific losses.

The volatile oils of R. canina flowers were isolated by hydrodistillation (HD) and traditional dry distillation (DD) and analyzed by HRGC-FID and GC-MS. Compared to HD, DD at 50◦C leads to the isolation of high quality oil which contains the highest content of oxygenated compounds (83%). The main components are the 2-phenethyl alcohol and eugenol. The percentage of the 2-phenethyl alcohol, a highly desirable component in rose oil, was significantly higher (58.4%) in DD extract when compared to that of HD one (13.6%).

How does the forestry governance system affect the implementation of initiatives to support Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation (REDD+), CDM projects of Afforestation and Reforestation in particular, and bio carbon in general? The Participatory Forest Management approach (drawbacks, potential to be scaled up, etc.). It is a gender policy analysis of the following climate documents Ethiopian Forest Resources: current status and future management options in view of access to carbon finances; Manual for Measurement and Monitoring of Carbon Stocks in Forests and Other Land Uses in Ethiopia; Forum Brief. The aim is to give a situational analysis of the link between gender and REDD+ and CDM processes, mechanisms, and policy (context, challenges, opportunities, , implications, and experiences from other countries); also propositions on how to make REDD+ and CDM pro- gender, pro-poor, and pro-rights and tenure with strong forestry institutional arrangement with adequate capacity, proper policy and legislation, access to finance and benefit sharing, and capacity building. The following questions have guided the gender analysis. Gender questions in the context of carbon market and CDM - What are the gender options under REDD+ and CDM? What are the strategic paths to pursuit, and how to link it with the existing policy choices (poverty reduction, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, community-based adaptation, etc.)? - Adequate financial compensation for efforts to preserve forests and to participate in sustainable forest management (SFM) initiatives.
