This study aims to monitor and evaluate the objectives of the Gullele Botanic Gardens (GBG) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The following report advances the understanding of existing understory and tree species in GBG and aims to uncover various attributes of the conservation forest. To provide a baseline dataset for future research and management practices, this report focused on species composition and carbon stock analysis of the area. Species-specific allometric equations to estimate above-ground biomass for Juniperus procera and Eucalyptus globulus are applied in this study to test the restoration strategy and strength of applied allometry to estimate carbon stock of the conservation area. The equations and carbon stock of the forest were evaluated with the following hypothesis: Removal of E. globulus of greater than 35cm DBH would impact the carbon storage (Mg ha-1) significantly as compared to the overall estimate. Marion Garden Rose Garden
Marion Garden Rose Garden The Rose Garden is a work in constant change to demonstrate how to grow and maintain a variety of roses that are suitable for home gardens in the Willamette Valley. Selection of plants has been based on suitability for landscape use, resistance to disease, repeat blooming, and availability to the home gardener. If we find that a rose bush has a lot of disease problems or does not bloom well it is removed. The visitor will find mostly hybrid teas but also floribundas, grandifloras, shrub roses and an English (Austin) rose. There is also one upright climbing rose named ‘Antique’. Two clematis vines (Viola and Asso) have been planted on either side of the climbing rose trellis. Clematis are a good compliment to large climbing roses and add interest and color to the garden. All the rose bushes have ID tags which include the name of the rose, type, any awards it has received, name of the hybridizer, and the year the rose was introduced. There are a couple of roses that do not have ID tags because they were donated and names were not known. They are good disease resistant plants with a good bloom habit so are used for cuttings for rose propagation workshops. There is also a Lonicera fragrantissima (winter honeysuckle, January jasmine, or Chinese honeysuckle) growing on the northwest corner of the rose garden. It has fragrant white flowers in January and February. It was there when this garden was started and is a nice shrub for the home garden. It is pruned in the spring after it finishes blooming. -

Recipes Rose hips Rosa spp. Tips • Use fresh, dried or frozen. • Be sure to remove the irritating seeds before use. This can be done by cutting the hips in half and scraping out the seeds with the tip of a paring knife. • Spread hips out on a screen or tray to dry for storage or freeze. • Dried whole and powdered rose hips can be found online and at local herb and health food stores Rose Hip Herbal Tea 1 tablespoon dried rose hips 1 teaspoon fennel seeds 1 teaspoon freshly ground grated gingerroot 2 teaspoons fresh lemon verbena 3 cups boiling water 3 thin slices lime 3 tablespoons rose hip liqueur, optional honey Warm a teapot by rinsing with hot water. Add all herbs to the pot, then fill the pot with freshly boiled bottled or filtered water. Cover the pot and allow the herbs to steep for 5 minutes. Strain out the herbs. Serve with a little honey and a slice of lime, or if desired, a spoonful of rose hip liqueur. Yields 3 cups. Floriculture businesses seek new, innovative trends and niches to help increase product sales. Specialty cut flower (SCF) production has increased in the past 20 years in the US, Australia, Africa, and Europe. SCF production and sales could increase further if these new products were supported by dynamic marketing campaigns that focus on their strengths compared to the traditional cut flowers (TCF) such as roses, carnations, gerberas, and chrysanthemums. The major strength of SCF is the eco-friendly profile, which is associated to low CO2 footprints and environmental outputs. This contrasts TCF cultivation, which is associated to high energy inputs, especially at the traditional production centres (e.g., The Netherlands). It is suggested that environmental legislations, production costs, and customer demand for eco-friendly products will positively affect future SCF cultivation and sale. College University, Lahore 54000 Pakistan, 3Department of Chemistry, University of Gujrat, Pakistan Abstract This paper reports the isolation and characterization of essential oil of Rosa centifolia. The oil was extracted from freshly collected flower petals of R. centifolia with petroleum ether using Soxhlet apparatus. Rosa centifolia showed 0.225% concrete oil and 0.128% yield of absolute oil. Some physico-chemical properties of the extracted oil like colour, refractive index, congealing point, optical rotation, specific gravity, acid number and ester number were determined and were found to be yellowish brown, 1.454 at 340C, 15°C, -32.50 to +54.21, 0.823 at 30oC, 14.10245 and 28.1876. High- resolution gas liquid chromatographic (HR-GLC) analysis of the essential oil of R. centifolia, showed the phenethyl alcohol, geranyl acetate, geraniol and linalool as major components whereas, benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and citronellyl acetate were detected at trace levels. Introduction A variety of roses are generally cultivated for home and garden beautification in many parts of the world. Its rich fragrance has perfumed human history for generations (Rose, 1999). Roses contain very little essential oil but it has a wide range of applications in many industries for the scenting and flavouring purposes. It is used as perfumer in soap and cosmetics and as a flavor in tea and liquors. -

Accepted 13 February, 2009 A few temperate zone fruit species such as apples, pears, apricots and cherries dominate the fruit production in Eastern Anatolia region in Turkey, while the other species (e.g rose hip, hawthorn, sea buckthorn etc.) are less known. Native species grown in their natural ecosystems could be exploited as new foods, valuable natural compounds and derivatives. In the last few years, interest in the rose hip as a fruit crop has increased considerably due to its nutritive and health promoting values. The study was conducted between 2005 and 2006. Among 5000 natural growing rose hip plants around the Van region were examined and among them 26 genotypes were selected. Thirteen genotypes belong to Rosa canina. The fruit weight, length and width of genotypes were ranged between 1.79 - 4.95 g; 15.28 - 33.83 mm and 13.11 - 19.26 mm, respectively. Soluble solid content ranged from 17.73% (VRS132) to 28.45% (VRS 234). Ascorbic acid levels ranged between 517 to 1032 mg/100 ml. The phenotypically divergent genotypes identified in this study could be of much use in the future breeding program. -
Tips for Displaying Cut Flowers
TIPS FOR DISPLAYING CUT FLOWERS.... at home or at the fair 1. Remove the foliage from the portion of the stems that will be in water. Foliage covered with water will rot, discolor the water, and the bacteria growing in the water will block the stems causing the flowers to wilt sooner. 2. Labeling While bouquets at home don’t need labels, exhibits for the fair do. List the cultivar name as well as the type of flower (or vegetable) on the entry tag. Keeping records of what you plant and where will help you to know what each cultivar is when you prepare your exhibits. Exhibits without the cultivar or variety name are usually lowered one ribbon placing. Proper labeling insures that the judge can base the placing on the proper criteria. Good records also help you as you determine whether or not a specific cultivar is worth growing again. Finally, fair visitors and other exhibitors may be interested in growing the cultivars of plants that you grew and can get the information from the label. 3. Conditioning Flowers Conditioning flowers helps them last longer by reducing stem blockage and promoting quick water uptake. The vase life of many flowers, especially roses, can be increased by re-cutting the stems while holding them under water. This method prevents air from getting into the stem and blocking water uptake. Since you’ll need to re-cut the stems, always cut them as long as possible when harvesting your flowers. Cut the ends diagonally so they won’t rest flat on the bottom of the container. -
