This Week in St Andrew WWW.STANDREWCATHOLICCHURCH.ORG | (843) 448-5930 | 3501 N KINGS HWY, SUITE 102, MYRTLE BEACH, SC 29577 August 15, 2021 Dear Friends in Christ, This Sunday August 15th the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in which we recall that the Blessed Virgin Mary did not suffer death, as we know it, meaning the separation of the soul from the body and the corruption, or decay, of the body. Rather, at the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed, with body and soul intact, into heaven. This same feast is known in the Christian east as the Dormition of the Theotokos, or the “Falling Asleep of the Mother of God.” The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin has been part of Christian faith from the earliest days of the Church, as attested by the writings of the Church Fathers as well as the liturgical traditions of both east and west. But it was not defined formally as dogma until the first of November, 1950, when Pope Pius XII wrote in Munificentissimus Deus, or The Most Bountiful God: “By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory." That the Blessed Virgin Mary should not suffer the corruption of the body after death is a sign of the infinite bounty and generosity of God, and is truly fitting for her, who came into the world as the Immaculate Conception. In fact, today’s solemnity is inextricably linked with that solemnity. In the Immaculate Conception, we remember that Mary was conceived with soul untouched by the stain of original sin. God granted her this singular honor and grace in view of the redemptive work of the Divine Son she was to bear, who would enter into death in order to emerge victorious over the corruption of death. And so, just as her Immaculate Conception is the fruit of her Divine Son’s redemptive death, so too her Assumption is a reflection of His Resurrection. Just as the Risen Christ rises bodily to heaven, Mary is assumed bodily into heaven and abides forever in the presence of the Trinity, interceding for us that we might follow where she has gone after her Divine Son. It is a sad fact for us who have been redeemed, but yet are still fallen and suffer from the effects of sin, that when our earthly course is run, we will experience death, the separation of body and soul and then the corruption of the body. But despite this, through faith in Christ Jesus, we know that the grave is not the end. We, too, can join the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints in light. This is the very purpose of our life in the Church: being a Christian is for the purpose of coming to know and serve God in this world so that, when we experience death, we might live with him eternally in the glory of Heaven. So on this day when we celebrate the mercy and love of our bountiful God, who welcomed the Blessed Virgin Mary body and soul into heaven, let us pray also through her powerful intercession, that we might join her and all the saints when our life on earth comes to its end. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Fr. Pope Francis, in 2014, spoke in his homily about Christianity experiencing the largest numbers of martyrs today than ever before in its 2,000 year history.(1) In 2021, the number of martyrs is even greater. Yet - despite this persecution on a massive scale, Christianity is growing faster than any time in history. Where is this happening and why? In the last 100 years, the number of Christians has quadrupled from about 600 million in 1910 to well past 2 billion in 2020. Christianity remains the world's largest religious group.(2) Africa and Asia, with believers in the most persecuted countries, are seeing incredible expansion of Churches while the Church in Europe and America is declining.(3) (lifesitenews.com, 7/3/14(1); Christianpost.com, 12/27/16(2); learn religions.com, 4/6/20 (3); christianpost, com, 3/15/20; get religion.org, 5/15/21) Word of Life “In times of suffering, the human person should be able to experience a solidarity and a love that takes on the suffering, offering a sense of life that extends beyond death… In the family a person can count on strong relationships, valued in themselves apart from their helpfulness or the joy they bring.

B. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s.

The Holy See ADDRESS OF JOHN PAUL II TO THE PILGRIMS FROM URUGUAY, ITALY AND SWITZERLAND Saturday, 6 May 2000 Dear Brothers and Sisters from Uruguay! 1. I extend my cordial welcome to all of you who have come on pilgrimage to the Eternal City, the heart of Catholicism, thus experiencing a privileged moment of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000. I affectionately greet all of you, Bishops, priests, men and women religious, consecrated persons and faithful who this morning celebrated Holy Mass at the tomb of the Apostle Peter, after having passed through the Holy Door of the Vatican Basilica. I thank Bishop Raúl Horacio Scarrone Carrero of Florida, President of the Uruguayan Episcopal Conference, for the cordial words he addressed to me. My heart is still filled with memories of the Pastoral Visit I made to your country precisely 12 years ago. It was a great joy to be among you to enliven your faith, strengthen your hope and encourage your love. Your Jubilee pilgrimage also coincides with the anniversary of the death of Jacinto Vera, the first Bishop of Uruguay, who was able to bring, not without difficulty, the presence of the Church to every corner of the country. I urge you, dear sons and daughters of Uruguay, to continue faithfully the mission that the Lord has entrusted to you and to give joyous witness to Christ in today's society. Your ecclesial journey will be strengthened by the celebration of the National Eucharistic Congress, scheduled for next October. I hope and wish that it will be a special moment of grace.

  • The First Companions of Michael Garicoits
T HE FIRST COMPANIONS OF MICHAEL GARICOÏTS by Father Beñat Oyhénart scj DO WE REALLY KNOW THE FIRST COMPANIONS OF ST. MICHAEL WHO SHARED HIS DREAM AND HIS EFFORTS TO FULFIL IT IN THE C HURCH OF HIS TIME? PROBABLY WE DO: WHO HAS NEVER HEARD OF FR. GUIMON, FR. CHIROU, FR. LARROUY, FR. PERGUILHEM, FR. FONDEVILLE, FR. D. BARBÉ, FR. SARDOY? BUT WE MAY NOT KNOW THEIR PERSONALITY, NOR HOW THEY MET SAINT MICHAEL, HOW THEY DECIDED TO FULLY DEDICATE THEMSELVES TO A PROJECT WHICH WAS INSPIRED BY GOD AND DREW THEM TO BE THE PILLARS OF THE EMERGING CONGREGATION, DESPITE ALL THE WORKS AND THE OBSTACLES, THE DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES. THERE ARE SOME BEAUTIFUL STORIES TO TELL. Simon Guimon, a fiery temper Bishop d’Arbou, appointed to Bayonne in 1830, wanted to continue the project of Bishop d’Astros: bring all the seminarians back to Bayonne. The old superior of Betharram, Pierre-Procope Lassalle, died on July 5, 1831. He was succeeded by Michael Garicoits. Appointed to the Convent of Igon, was Simon Guimon, a former missionary. He didn’t last long: the rigor of the new chaplain discouraged young religious and postulants. Jeanne-Élisabeth Bichier des Ages, the founder, was upset by it and so Michael Garicoits took the road to Igon; For 30 years! Far from being discouraged, Simon Guimon put himself under the guidance of the new superior of Betharram. Thus, his first support is formed, more than a friend. As planned, the seminary of Betharram was empty after the ordinations of December 23, 1833. Eventually, Abbé Guimon took up a hectic schedule of parish ministry.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Makings of Marginality: Land Use Intensification and the Diffusion of Rural Poverty in Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Uruguay A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in Geography by Samuel Brandt 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS The Makings of Marginality: Land Use Intensification and the Diffusion of Rural Poverty in Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Uruguay by Samuel Brandt Master of Arts in Geography University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Stephen Andrew Bell, Chair This thesis examines the historical-geographical processes that led to the marginalization of a rural underclass in Uruguay and to the formation of rural informal settlements, or rancheríos. In doing so, it brings forth three main ideas. The first is that of the pastoral city-state as a metaphor for the excessive centrality of Montevideo in a territory dominated by extensive livestock raising. The second and third look at the makings of rural marginality and the gradual transformation of Uruguay’s rural proletariat from semi-nomadic gauchos to sedentary peons as the result of the closing of two frontiers; a spatial frontier in the colonial period, and a technological frontier in the latter half of the nineteenth century. In both cases, the intensification of land use resulted in the consolidation of Montevideo’s primacy. ii The thesis of Samuel Brandt is approved. Judith A. Carney Cesar J. • A 200 Años El Nacimiento De Mons. Jacinto Vera. 1813-2013. Jornadas
A 200 años el nacimiento de Mons. Jacinto Vera. 1813-2013. Jornadas.

PARTE I CATOLICISMO Y NACION EN EL CENTENARIO Gerardo Caetano – Roger Geymonat – Alejandro Sánchez Capítulo 1 "DIOS Y PATRIA".
