Dear Friends in Christ,
This Sunday August 15th the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in which we recall that the Blessed Virgin Mary did not suffer death, as we know it, meaning the separation of the soul from the body and the corruption, or decay, of the body. Rather, at the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed, with body and soul intact, into heaven. This same feast is known in the Christian east as the Dormition of the Theotokos, or the “Falling Asleep of the Mother of God.”
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin has been part of Christian faith from the earliest days of the Church, as attested by the writings of the Church Fathers as well as the liturgical traditions of both east and west. But it was not defined formally as dogma until the first of November, 1950, when Pope Pius XII wrote in Munificentissimus Deus, or The Most Bountiful God: “By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory."
That the Blessed Virgin Mary should not suffer the corruption of the body after death is a sign of the infinite bounty and generosity of God, and is truly fitting for her, who came into the world as the Immaculate Conception. In fact, today’s solemnity is inextricably linked with that solemnity. In the Immaculate Conception, we remember that Mary was conceived with soul untouched by the stain of original sin. God granted her this singular honor and grace in view of the redemptive work of the Divine Son she was to bear, who would enter into death in order to emerge victorious over the corruption of death. And so, just as her Immaculate Conception is the fruit of her Divine Son’s redemptive death, so too her Assumption is a reflection of His Resurrection. Just as the Risen Christ rises bodily to heaven, Mary is assumed bodily into heaven and abides forever in the presence of the Trinity, interceding for us that we might follow where she has gone after her Divine Son.
It is a sad fact for us who have been redeemed, but yet are still fallen and suffer from the effects of sin, that when our earthly course is run, we will experience death, the separation of body and soul and then the corruption of the body. But despite this, through faith in Christ Jesus, we know that the grave is not the end. We, too, can join the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints in light. This is the very purpose of our life in the Church: being a Christian is for the purpose of coming to know and serve God in this world so that, when we experience death, we might live with him eternally in the glory of Heaven.
So on this day when we celebrate the mercy and love of our bountiful God, who welcomed the Blessed Virgin Mary body and soul into heaven, let us pray also through her powerful intercession, that we might join her and all the saints when our life on earth comes to its end.

Where in the World is Christianity Growing and Why?
Pope Francis, in 2014, spoke in his homily about Christianity experiencing the largest numbers of martyrs today than ever before in its 2,000 year history.(1) In 2021, the number of martyrs is even greater.
Yet - despite this persecution on a massive scale, Christianity is growing faster than any time in history. Where is this happening and why?
In the last 100 years, the number of Christians has quadrupled from about 600 million in 1910 to well past 2 billion in 2020. Christianity remains the world's largest religious group.(2) Africa and Asia, with believers in the most persecuted countries, are seeing incredible expansion of Churches while the Church in Europe and America is declining.(3)

Queridos amigos en Cristo,
Este domingo 15 de agosto la Iglesia celebra la Solemnidad de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María, en la que recordamos que la Santísima Virgen María no sufrió la muerte, como la conocemos, es decir, la separación del alma del cuerpo y la corrupción, o descomposición, del cuerpo. Más bien, al final de su vida terrenal, María fue asumida, con cuerpo y alma intactos, al cielo. Esta misma fiesta se conoce en el oriente cristiano como la Dormición de la Theotokos, o el "Dormirse de la Madre de Dios".
La Asunción de la Santísima Virgen ha sido parte de la fe cristiana desde los primeros días de la Iglesia, como atestiguan los escritos de los Padres de la Iglesia, así como las tradiciones litúrgicas tanto de oriente como de occidente. Pero no se definió formalmente como dogma hasta el primero de noviembre de 1950, cuando el Papa Pío XII escribió en Munificentissimus Deus, o El Dios más generoso: “Por la autoridad de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, de los bienaventurados apóstoles Pedro y Pablo, y por nuestra propia autoridad, lo pronunciamos, declaramos y definimos como un dogma divinamente revelado: que la Inmaculada Madre de Dios, la siempre Virgen María, habiendo completado el curso de su vida terrenal, fue asumida en cuerpo y alma en la gloria celestial. "
Que la Santísima Virgen María no sufra la corrupción del cuerpo después de la muerte es un signo de la infinita bondad y generosidad de Dios, y es verdaderamente apropiado para ella, que vino al mundo como la Inmaculada Concepción. Es un hecho triste para nosotros que hemos sido redimidos, pero aún estamos caídos y sufrimos por los efectos del pecado, que cuando nuestro curso terrenal termine, experimentaremos la muerte, la separación de cuerpo y alma y luego la corrupción del cuerpo. Pero a pesar de esto, por la fe en Cristo Jesús, sabemos que la tumba no es el fin. Nosotros también podemos unirnos a la Santísima Virgen María y a todos los santos en la luz. Este es el verdadero propósito de nuestra vida en la Iglesia: ser cristiano tiene el propósito de llegar a conocer y servir a Dios en este mundo para que, cuando experimentemos la muerte, podamos vivir con él eternamente en la gloria del cielo.
