This Week in St Andrew WWW.STANDREWCATHOLICCHURCH.ORG | (843) 448-5930 | 3501 N KINGS HWY, SUITE 102, MYRTLE BEACH, SC 29577 July 25, 2021 Dear Friends in Christ, “To have ... To hold ... To honor: Natural Family Planning, Supporting God’s gifts of love and life in marriage” is the theme of this year’s National Natural Family Planning Awareness Week, which will begin this Sunday, July 25. Natural Family Planning Awareness Week is an educational campaign of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops along with our own Diocesan Office of Family Life, which helps us to understand and celebrate God’s vision for marriage and promote the methods of Natural Family Planning. Please go to our parish website or the website for the Diocese of Charleston for information on the educational opportunities available this week, both online and in person. The start date is not accidental; July 25th is the anniversary of the publication of Humanae Vitae, written by Pope Saint Paul VI in response to the development and widespread availability of the contraceptive pill, first approved by the FDA in 1960. In Humanae Vitae, Saint Paul VI reaffirmed the ancient and constant teaching of the church on the nature of married love, responsible parenthood, and the rejection of unnatural forms of birth control, such as the contraceptive pill. The social situation in which Humanae Vitae was written and received was tumultuous to say the very least. The widespread availability of the birth control pill was but one aspect of the Sexual Revolution of the 1960’s, which brought about a variety of radical changes in our cultural attitudes toward sex, homosexuality, monogamy, marriage, and family. This, along with the perennial concerns regarding the difficulties involved with bearing and raising many children, as well as widespread concerns of world overpopulation, resulted in Pope Saint John XXIII calling for a commission to study the question of contraception. The commission, known as the Pontifical Commission on Birth Control, was expanded by Paul VI to include over 70 theologians, physicians, laywomen, bishops, and cardinals. Ultimately, the Commission came to a divided conclusion, with the majority of members recommending that contraception be allowed under certain circumstances, and a minority of members urging that the Church should not, indeed, could not, change its perennial teaching. Paul VI received these reports in 1966 and considered their findings. When Humanae Vitae was published in 1968, the Pope upheld the long-standing teaching of the Church, which rejects contraception as destructive to the nature of marriage and the marital act, as well as contrary to the dignity of the human person. On the other hand, he explicitly condoned various forms of natural family planning. We should note well that this was no innovation; it was simply continuous with what the Church had always held and taught. Nevertheless, those who wanted a different answer did not have ears to hear. Sad to say, many Catholics, both lay and clergy, openly rejected the teaching, often referring to the majority finding of the Commission as their justification. But we must remember that the Holy Spirit does not guide or guarantee the findings of any commission, council, focus group, or board of experts. The Spirit guides the Church into all truth through the magisterial teachings of the Bishops and especially of the Vicar of Christ. That the Spirit in writing Humanae Vitae guided Pope Saint Paul cannot today be doubted, considering the prophetic power present in the document. In this document, Paul warns of four particular negative results, which the acceptance of contraception would bring about. Next Sunday at the conclusion of Natural Family Planning Awareness Week, we will continue with a consideration of these predictions, and how they have each come to pass. Fr. B. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s.

  • The Holy See
The Holy See ADDRESS OF JOHN PAUL II TO THE PILGRIMS FROM URUGUAY, ITALY AND SWITZERLAND Saturday, 6 May 2000 Dear Brothers and Sisters from Uruguay! 1. I extend my cordial welcome to all of you who have come on pilgrimage to the Eternal City, the heart of Catholicism, thus experiencing a privileged moment of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000. I affectionately greet all of you, Bishops, priests, men and women religious, consecrated persons and faithful who this morning celebrated Holy Mass at the tomb of the Apostle Peter, after having passed through the Holy Door of the Vatican Basilica. I thank Bishop Raúl Horacio Scarrone Carrero of Florida, President of the Uruguayan Episcopal Conference, for the cordial words he addressed to me. My heart is still filled with memories of the Pastoral Visit I made to your country precisely 12 years ago. It was a great joy to be among you to enliven your faith, strengthen your hope and encourage your love. Your Jubilee pilgrimage also coincides with the anniversary of the death of Jacinto Vera, the first Bishop of Uruguay, who was able to bring, not without difficulty, the presence of the Church to every corner of the country. I urge you, dear sons and daughters of Uruguay, to continue faithfully the mission that the Lord has entrusted to you and to give joyous witness to Christ in today's society. Your ecclesial journey will be strengthened by the celebration of the National Eucharistic Congress, scheduled for next October. I hope and wish that it will be a special moment of grace.

T HE FIRST COMPANIONS OF MICHAEL GARICOÏTS by Father Beñat Oyhénart scj DO WE REALLY KNOW THE FIRST COMPANIONS OF ST. MICHAEL WHO SHARED HIS DREAM AND HIS EFFORTS TO FULFIL IT IN THE C HURCH OF HIS TIME? PROBABLY WE DO: WHO HAS NEVER HEARD OF FR. GUIMON, FR. CHIROU, FR. LARROUY, FR. PERGUILHEM, FR. FONDEVILLE, FR. BUT WE MAY NOT KNOW THEIR PERSONALITY, NOR HOW THEY MET SAINT MICHAEL, HOW THEY DECIDED TO FULLY DEDICATE THEMSELVES TO A PROJECT WHICH WAS INSPIRED BY GOD AND DREW THEM TO BE THE PILLARS OF THE EMERGING CONGREGATION, DESPITE ALL THE WORKS AND THE OBSTACLES, THE DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES. THERE ARE SOME BEAUTIFUL STORIES TO TELL. Simon Guimon, a fiery temper Bishop d’Arbou, appointed to Bayonne in 1830, wanted to continue the project of Bishop d’Astros: bring all the seminarians back to Bayonne. The old superior of Betharram, Pierre-Procope Lassalle, died on July 5, 1831. He was succeeded by Michael Garicoits. Appointed to the Convent of Igon, was Simon Guimon, a former missionary. He didn’t last long: the rigor of the new chaplain discouraged young religious and postulants. Jeanne-Élisabeth Bichier des Ages, the founder, was upset by it and so Michael Garicoits took the road to Igon; For 30 years! Far from being discouraged, Simon Guimon put himself under the guidance of the new superior of Betharram. Thus, his first support is formed, more than a friend. As planned, the seminary of Betharram was empty after the ordinations of December 23, 1833. Eventually, Abbé Guimon took up a hectic schedule of parish ministry.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Makings of Marginality: Land Use Intensification and the Diffusion of Rural Poverty in Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Uruguay A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in Geography by Samuel Brandt 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS The Makings of Marginality: Land Use Intensification and the Diffusion of Rural Poverty in Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Uruguay by Samuel Brandt Master of Arts in Geography University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Stephen Andrew Bell, Chair This thesis examines the historical-geographical processes that led to the marginalization of a rural underclass in Uruguay and to the formation of rural informal settlements, or rancheríos. In doing so, it brings forth three main ideas. The first is that of the pastoral city-state as a metaphor for the excessive centrality of Montevideo in a territory dominated by extensive livestock raising. The second and third look at the makings of rural marginality and the gradual transformation of Uruguay’s rural proletariat from semi-nomadic gauchos to sedentary peons as the result of the closing of two frontiers; a spatial frontier in the colonial period, and a technological frontier in the latter half of the nineteenth century. In both cases, the intensification of land use resulted in the consolidation of Montevideo’s primacy. ii The thesis of Samuel Brandt is approved. Judith A. Carney Cesar J. • A 200 Años El Nacimiento De Mons. Jacinto Vera. 1813-2013. Jornadas
A 200 años el nacimiento de Mons. Jacinto Vera. 1813-2013. Jornadas.

PARTE I CATOLICISMO Y NACION EN EL CENTENARIO Gerardo Caetano – Roger Geymonat – Alejandro Sánchez Capítulo 1 "DIOS Y PATRIA".
