20th January, 2015 Kampala, Uganda
The Ranking Web or Webometrics is the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions. Webometrics does the global ranking twice a year according to the number of times a new article appears on the Internet about research done at the institution. This is considered an indicator of the impact and prestige of the university and its commitment to disseminating research outcomes. We are pleased to share with you the ranking of our member universities for the year 2015. Among the 55 member universities, Stellenbosch University was ranked highest (2nd position after the University of Cape Town), followed by University of Pretoria (4th position), University of KwaZulu Natal (6th position) and Makerere University (11th position). Only 20 of the 55 RUFORUM universities were ranked among the top 100 African universities and 44 universities ranked under the top 500 including the 20 universities mentioned above. Please see table for the rankings.

Below is a summary of the Times Higher Education ranking criteria (Click here for more details)
Teaching (the learning environment): 30% This indicator looks at the issues of reputation-the perceived prestige of institutions in teaching, staff to student ratio, doctorate to bachelors’ ratio, doctorates awarded to academic staff ratio and institutional income. It draws focus to how committed an institution is to nurturing the next generation of academics and a broad sense of infrastructure and facilitates available to students and staff in the university.
Research (volume, income and reputation): 30% Here the indicator in this category looks at a university’s reputation for research excellence among its peers, research income and research productivity. We draw focus to research productivity looking at the number of papers published in the academic journals indexed by Elsevier’s Scopus database per scholar. This gives a sense of the university’s ability to get papers published in quality peer-reviewed journals.
Citations (research influence): 30% The research influence indicator looks at universities’ role in spreading new knowledge and ideas by capturing the number of times a university’s published work is cited by scholars globally, compared with the number of citations a publication of similar type and subject is expected to have. The citations help to show how much each university is contributing to the sum of human knowledge globally.
International outlook (staff, students, research): 7.5% This indicator looks at international to domestic students/staff ratio and international collaborations with a focus on the ability of a university to attract undergraduates, postgraduates and faculty from all over the planet as key to its success on the world stage. Under the International collaborations, a proportion of a university’s total research journal publications that have at least one international co-author is critical.
Industry income (knowledge transfer): 2.5% A university’s ability to help industry with innovations, inventions and consultancy has become a core mission of the contemporary global academy. This category captures such knowledge-transfer activity by looking at how much research income an institution earns from industry. The category suggests the extent to which businesses are willing to pay for research and a university’s ability to attract funding in the commercial marketplace – useful indicators of institutional quality.

RUFORUM was established in 2004, with Secretariat hosted by Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. RUFORUM signed MoU with the African Union and has mandate to support capacity building for science, research and technology development in Africa. RUFORUM has supported the training of over 1500 postgraduate students, the generation of over 300 agricultural technologies and mobilized over US$70 million for strengthening postgraduate education in Africa.
