Communication Strategy Press Release For immediate release | 11 September, 2020 Eleven (11) RUFORUM Network Member Universities ranked among top Universities in Africa by The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 Kampala 11 September 2020 The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, published once a year, assesses institutions worldwide across 13 performance indicators in five areas: teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), international outlook (7.5%) and industry income (2.5%). This year more than 1 500 institutions were ranked in the 2021 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, across 93 countries and regions with a total of 63 Universities from Africa, and eleven (11) being members of the RUFORUM Network. The increase in demand for higher education in Africa demands that universities in Africa continue to demonstrate the value for the investments in Higher education by consistently showing their relevance in teaching, research, contribution to the labour force, community engagement and internationalising their institutions through academic mobility and exchange programmes. Even though controversial, University rankings have remained the common means of informing the public about the status of universities in teaching and research. The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), through its various initiatives such as trainings, research grants, Innovation and academic mobility, has for its entire existence strived to build capacity of its member universities to deliver quality education and enable them rank higher globally. According to this Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021, eleven (11) RUFORUM member Universities have been ranked among the top 63 Universities in Africa. This year’s ranking analysed more than 80 million citations across over 13 million research publications and included survey responses from 22,000 scholars globally. Below is the complete list of the top 63 universities ranked in Africa according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 1 The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 Advice on Qualification Equivalencies 2018-2019 University of Cambridge – Graduate Admissions Office This document is advisory only and is designed to give Departments a guide for the minimum entry requirements for each country. It is worth noting that there can be great variation in the education systems between countries, and Departments should, as always, consider each application on the strength of the references and other supporting materials in addition to the academic qualification. The document has been compiled from a variety of sources including: UK NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom) www.naric.org.uk; The International Office; and views from individuals in several Faculties. Please note that this table lists the University’s minimum requirements. Departments and Degree Committees differ in how they regard qualifications, and may therefore require a higher grade or qualification than that specified below. An academic case will be considered with relevant supporting information for applicants who do not meet these guidelines. Comments and views from colleagues on this document are very welcome. Please contact Clare Impey at the Graduate Admissions Office if you wish to comment on or add to any advice – [email protected] . When requesting more information about a specific case, it is helpful if you can send copies of the applicant’s academic transcripts where possible. ****NOTE: Where multiple grading schemes are listed on one transcript, whichever requirement is the highest should be applied. A Report on the Mapping Study of Peace & Security Engagement in African Tertiary Institutions Written by Funmi E. Vogt This project was funded through the support of the Carnegie Corporation About the African Leadership Centre In July 2008, King’s College London through the Conflict, Security and Development group (CSDG), established the African Leadership Centre (ALC). In June 2010, the ALC was officially launched in Nairobi, Kenya, as a joint initiative of King’s College London and the University of Nairobi. The ALC aims to build the next generation of scholars and analysts on peace, security and development. The idea of an African Leadership Centre was conceived to generate innovative ways to address some of the challenges faced on the African continent, by a new generation of “home‐grown” talent. The ALC provides mentoring to the next generation of African leaders and facilitates their participation in national, regional and international efforts to achieve transformative change in Africa, and is guided by the following principles: a) To foster African‐led ideas and processes of change b) To encourage diversity in terms of gender, region, class and beliefs c) To provide the right environment for independent thinking d) Recognition of youth agency e) Pursuit of excellence f) Integrity The African Leadership Centre mentors young Africans with the potential to lead innovative change in their communities, countries and across the continent. The Centre links academia and the real world of policy and practice, and aims to build a network of people who are committed to the issue of Peace and Security on the continent of Africa.
