BIS 28.2. 2020 Selfportrait of Herbert Zangs, who put his face on a photocopy machine, ca. 1976 The Two Faces of Herbert Zangs (1924-2003) "This creative chaos, a vital natural phenomenon, was taken in by a single question: his fate as a thoroughbred painter" (Joseph Beuys 1974). The "creative chaos" formulated by Beuys, which I call the "two faces", is confirmed in all the works in the catalogue. Herbert Zangs' works are always concerned with the structuring overcoming of the chaotic nature that slumbers in reality and in the artist himself. In the "Knüpfungen" in particular, the reality and objectivity of the linen sheets and the knotted objects are creatively alienated, thus taking a new artistic path. Nevertheless, it was difficult for the artist to make it into the top list of avant-garde artists. This was once due to his temporally very extensive world travels to all continents and his not always serious appearance and behavior. The so-called "antidating", which, as is well known, came out in 1972, did him most harm. Zangs himself made a statement on this in the catalogue of the Westfälischer Kunstverein in 1974 in a conversation with John Matheson, who had asked him the critical question about the dating: "When I saw materials in a certain state of mind that occurred to me, I would collage them again in the old way.

  • German Expressionism: the Second Generation (Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1988): 10-37
Stephanie Barron, “Introduction” to Barron (ed.), German Expressionism: The Second Generation (Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1988): 10-37. The notion that all the significant achievements of German Expressionism occurred before 1914 is a familiar one. Until recently most scholars and almost all exhibitions of German Expressionist work have drawn the line with the 1913 dissolution of Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Berlin or the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. Peter Selz’s pioneering study German Expressionist Painting, published in 1957, favored 1914 as a terminus as did Wolf-Dieter Dube’s Expressionism, which appeared in 1977. It is true that by 1914 personal differences had led the Brücke artists to dissolve their association, and Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) had disintegrated when Wassily Kandinsky returned from Munich to Russia and Franz Marc volunteered for war service. Other artists’ associations also broke up when their members were drafted. Thus, the outbreak of the war has provided a convenient endpoint for many historians, who see the postwar artistic activities of Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Kathe Kollwitz, and others as individual, not group responses and describe the 1920s as the period of developments at the Bauhaus in Weimar or of the growing popularity of Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). The years 1915-25 have been lost, or certainly not adequately defined, as a coherent and potent, albeit brief, idealistic period in the evolution of German Expressionism. More recent scholarship, including Dube’s Expressionists and Expressionism (1983) and Donald E. Gordon’s Expressionism- Art and Idea (1987), sees the movement as surviving into the 1920s.

  • Heinrich Zille's Berlin Selected Themes from 1900
"/v9 6a~ts1 HEINRICH ZILLE'S BERLIN SELECTED THEMES FROM 1900 TO 1914: THE TRIUMPH OF 'ART FROM THE GUTTER' THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS By Catherine Simke Nordstrom Denton, Texas May, 1985 Copyright by Catherine Simke Nordstrom 1985 Nordstrom, Catherine Simke, Heinrich Zille's Berlin Selected Themes from 1900 to 1914: The Trium of 'Art from the Gutter.' Master of Arts (Art History), May, 1985, 139 pp., 71 illustrations, bibliography, 64 titles. Heinrich Zille (1858-1929), an artist whose creative vision was concentrated on Berlin's working class, portrayed urban life with devastating accuracy and earthy humor. His direct and often crude rendering linked his drawings and prints with other artists who avoided sentimentality and idealization in their works. In fact, Zille first exhibited with the Berlin Secession in 1901, only months after Kaiser Wilhelm II denounced such art as Rinnsteinkunst, or 'art from the gutter.' Zille chose such themes as the resultant effects of over-crowded, unhealthy living conditions, the dissolution of the family, loss of personal dignity and economic exploi tation endured by the working class. But Zille also showed their entertainments, their diversions, their excesses. In so doing, Zille laid bare the grim and the droll realities of urban life, perceived with a steady, unflinching gaze.
