SCRIPTA JUDAICA CRACOVIENSIA * Vol. 2 Kraków 2003 Magdalena Ruta Preliminary remarks on Yiddish Culture in Poland 1945-1968 Permit me to present some general remarks on Yiddish culture in Poland after the Second World War. This war brought the extermination of both Polish Jews and their culture which had flowered in the interwar period, especially in Poland, with enormous intensity. Nevertheless, a small group of Jewish writers and journalists, who had survived mostly in the Soviet Union, made an effort to later revive Yiddish culture in Poland. To my knowledge there has not been much research on this topic. Nonetheless, some historical works, in which authors concentrate mainly on the 1945-1956 period, have appeared in Poland in recent years. 1 In the Encyclopedia szel Galujot (VM) there is a 20 page article entitled “Yiddishe literarishe tetikeyt in Poyln in di yom 1946-1968” written by David Sfard, and in Encyclopedia Judaica (CD Rom Edition) one can find an entry for Poland with an article on Jewish cultural life in post war Poland by this same author. In 1987 the Bibliography of Hebrew and Yiddish Publications in Poland since 1944 was published in Israel. The same year Shlomo Straus-Marko wrote Di geshikhte fun yidishn yishuv in nokhmilkhomedikn Poyln, which contains reprints of articles from the Jewish press of 1945-1968 and reflections on subjects connected with culture (press, publicity, literary life, etc. ), but this work seems to lack a scholarly nature. There also exist remembrances referring to the epoch of 1945-1968. Among them are David Sfard’s and Hersh (Grzegorz) Smolar’s memoirs. -

Faith Jones “WANDERING IS YOUR FATE”: ESTHER SHUMI- ATCHER-HIRSCHBEIN WRITING ACROSS BOUNDARIES On the cover of the premier issue of an avant-garde Yiddish literary magazine, a bird is flying, a soft right-to-left swoosh of head and feathers interrupted by harsh, geometric up-and-down wings. Or perhaps the wings are not actual wings but an indus- trial road through a serene landscape stretching sideways across the page. They could even be a bridge over water flowing below. Read from bottom to top, the geometric forms – be they wings or a human construction – spell, in Yiddish, “Albatross.” Published in Warsaw in 1922 and then in Berlin in 1923, and edited by Uri Tsvi Grinberg, a complex figure in both Yiddish and Hebrew literature, Albatros was one of several ambitious and short-lived periodicals that gave voice to Eastern European artists, many of them in transit between Russia and the west, or Russia and Palestine.1 Heavily influenced by German expressionism, these publications were notable for their integration of art, contemporary design, experimental type, and other innovations. It is curious, then, and striking, that Albatros took its name from a poem by a Canadian woman, Esther Shumiatcher, who was simply passing through Warsaw at the time Grinberg was gathering materials for his first issue, and who only recently had begun to write. The three poems by Shumiatcher (“Albatross” and two others) that appeared in the first issue of the journal were among her earliest publications. While no explicit editorial statement was made about the choice of title, the opening pages of the journal featured a 16 Faith Jones “Proclamation” written in Grinberg’s trademark dense, meta- phoric language, which shed light on the editor’s vision and the resonance of certain themes for this group of refugee-intellectuals: Door and battlements are open to the Four Winds, where the eternal Pilgrims are pulled, the sin of restlessness, of purified all-world — all- people recognition. -

Hidden Contiguities: Zalman Shneour and Leonid Andreyev, David Vogel and Peter Altenberg Lilah Nethanel Bar-Ilan University abstract: The map of modern Jewish literature is made up of contiguous cultural environments. Rather than a map of territories, it is a map of stylistic and conceptual intersections. But these intersections often leave no trace in a translation, a quotation, a documented encounter, or an archived correspondence. We need to reconsider the mapping of modern Jewish literature: no longer as a defined surface divided into ter- ritories of literary activity and publishing but as a dynamic and often implicit set of contiguities. Unlike comparative research that looks for the essence of literary influ- ence in the exposure of a stylistic or thematic similarity between works, this article discusses two cases of “hidden contiguities” between modern Jewish literature and European literature. They occur in two distinct contact zones in which two European Jewish authors were at work: Zalman Shneour (Shklov, Belarus, 1887–New York, 1959), whose early work, on which this article focuses, was done in Tsarist Russia; and David Vogel (Podolia, Russia, 1891–Auschwitz, 1944), whose main work was done in Vienna after the First World War. rior to modern jewish nationalism becoming a pragmatic political organization, modern Jewish literature arose as an essentially nonsovereign literature. It embraced multinational contexts and was written in several languages. This literature developed Pin late nineteenth-century Europe on a dual basis: it expressed the immanent national founda- tions of a Jewish-national renaissance, as well as being deeply inspired by the host environment. It presents a fascinating case study for recent research on transnational cultures, since it escapes any stable borderline and instead manifests conflictual tendencies of disintegration and reinte- gration, enclosure and permeability, outreach and localism.1 1 Emily S. -

Yehoyesh and his Bible Translation No single work—Shakespeare excepted—has so influenced language and modes of thought and feeling in the English- speaking world as has the 1611 King James Version of the Bible. Despite scores of translations since—more accurate, more accessible, often more readable—it continues to occupy a special place among monuments of the English language. Historians have stressed the impact of Martin Luther's Bible translation on German nationalism and culture. Many peoples throughout the world received their alphabets and their first written literary work when linguist-missionaries translated the Bible into their native language. (For some of the world's more than six thousand or so languages this process continues.) A handmaiden of Yiddish literature, present at its genesis, Bible translation has occupied a strong if no longer central position in Yiddish writing. At a World Jewish Congress-sponsored conference in London around 1961, the alphabet scholar David Diringer and others suggested a project to retranslate the Hebrew Bible into a more modern Yiddish than that employed by Yehoyesh. 2 Nothing came of this idea (which has perhaps been raised at other times and in other forums as well), and it seems even less worthy of high priority today when Yiddish language maintenance is hard pressed. -

Although a number of initiatives to preserve the “sung folklore” of the Nazi ghettos and camps were undertaken soon after the end of the Second World War, Kaczerginski’s magnum opus, the anthology Lider fun di getos un lagern (Songs of the Ghettos and Camps), published in New York in 1948, remains unsurpassed to this day as a resource for research in the field of Jewish folk and popular music of the Holocaust period. ii Chapter one of the dissertation recounts Kaczerginski’s life story, from his underprivileged childhood in Vilna, Imperial Russia (present-day Vilnius, Lithuania), to his tragic early death in Argentina. -

Sachs Born in Žagarė, Lithuania in 1878, he received a traditional Jewish education until the age of 17, when he began to pursue the study of political economy and socialism. In 1899 he received his teaching license and attended the universities of Warsaw and then Berlin, worked as an agriculturist in Słobódka Leśna in 1905, and finally graduated in 1907 from the University of Jena with a degree in and ,[ דער טאג] Agronomy. He immigrated to Amer to several Yiddish language newspapers in the New York area, particularly The Day published works on polit ica in 1908, first working as a journalist in Chicago before moving to New York in 1910 to become editor of He contributed ical economy, the history of socialism, natural science, and most famously the shtetls of Lithuania in a .[ צוקונפט] Zukunft book called "Choreve Veltn", published in 1917. First and foremost an educator, Sachs was a frequent lecturer and taught for the Arbeter Ring, the Jewish Folk University, and the Jewish Teachers Seminary. He was a member of YIVO, the Yiddish PEN Club, and president of the Jewish Writer’s Union (1925-1926). After his sudden death in 1931, his wife, friends, and former students formed a society to promote his memory and publish his remaining work.
