Mercilessly and cruelly, he ends the lives of those who are bound by guilt and are responsible for the death of his loved ones. Hiding behind the shadow of a rabies outburst in a remote location, he will find a way to terrorize locals and investigators alike. Eurochannel premieres a new dark thriller: In the Shadows! In the Shadows follows the story of a series of murders from the optic of Pavel, a young virologist sent to a small village to investigate a rabies contagion. The night before he arrives, three old men gather in a cabin deep in the woods – two of them are gruesomely murdered and the survivor doesn’t speak because of the trauma of this fateful night. As Pavel starts to dig the outburst and gets involved in the criminal case, he discovers a disturbing connection. Through its six thrilling episodes, In the Shadows transports viewers to one of the darkest corners of Europe. Despite everyone in this small town seem to know each other for generations, the double murder changes everything. Mistrust grows, old quarrels rekindle, and the police are unable to keep control. Playing with the ambivalent but deep connection between nature and humans, In the Shadows takes viewers on a whirlwind of fear and thrills. Its dark narrative creates a deep level of connection with the characters and actors – including the famous Jan Vlasák, famous for his roles in Hostel (2005), The Red Baron (2008) and Circus Bukowsky (2013). EUROCHANNEL GUIDE SEPTEMBER 2020 5 Interview with KRYSTOF HÁDEK (Leading Character) In the Shadows is a crime thriller that also includes the element of a viral disease of the central nervous system. Is thriller your favorite genre? Yes, it’s my favorite genre if it’s well shot. I like thrillers because they bring tension and one can guess who the perpetrator of the crime is. The popularity of short series has grown in recent years, how do you explain this and how do you perceive them? I like this format a lot. Its advantage is that it provides enough space to play more storylines and better characters. This allows viewers to better immerse ourselves in the story. But I also like playing in feature films because they have specific qualities. How much did you know about the disease the series deals with (rabies) before you read the script? Not too much, but I remember as a child small boxes in the woods that contained a rabies vaccine. They should not be touched. You play a virologist who sometimes must use technical terms. Is it difficult for an actor to use his character’s specific vocabulary convincingly? It’s not complicated for me. The important thing is to deliver a convincing performance. So, if needed, I will just learn technical terms. Maybe it’s even better if you don’t think so much about them because then your acting might be affected as you try to focus on individual concepts. How would you describe your character? He is an avid expert and you can see that he enjoys his work. On the other hand, he has a huge problem when it comes to interaction with other people. The series works a lot with animals. Were you personally afraid of a scene, or do you take it as a diversification of filming? I didn’t particularly notice the animal scenes. The shooting must be adapted to the animals. Besides, I have a positive attitude towards all animals, so I have no problem with such scenes. How was filming for you in Šumava? I like this mountain range very much because it is unique. Let’s hope it stays that way for a long time and doesn’t succumb to various economic and development pressures. Your partner in the series is Johana Matoušková, what was it like to play with her? Johana and I played together for the first time. We knew each other by sight. I enjoyed the tandem we created. Johana is a great actress and also a great person. *Courtesy of Czech Television 6 EUROCHANNEL GUIDE SEPTEMBER 2020 WHO IS WHO? DISCOVER THE LEADING CHARACTERS OF IN THE SHADOWS Pavel Rogl Pavel is a virologist sent to the Bučina by the State Veterinary Administration. A young man from the big city, he finds himself in his hometown absorbed in a difficult task but also getting to meet again those he loved in his childhood. Pavel has had several failed relationships and is trying to mend his heart. He is a sympathetic scientist, professionally focused, which makes him socially awkward. On the other hand, he also demonstrates an extraordinary sense of detail and the ability to put events in the right context. This turns out to be crucial during the investigation he helps with. Gabriela Burešová Gabriela is the charming owner of a family gardening company. Due to the circumstances, she bears the burden not only of worrying about the company but also about her younger sister. Her childless marriage ended before it began, and Pavel’s arrival revives memories of better times. They have known each other since grammar school. The case of mysterious deaths at a forest hut has a personal dimension to her because her father is the main suspect. And this is also the reason why the Bureš sisters are the target of hatred. Dr. Vacek Vacek is the district’s doctor. He spent his whole life in Šumava and is a great expert and admirer of it. He is extremely interested in the unexpected outbreak of rabies and becomes a kind of mentor for Pavel. He lives alone surrounded by his books. As an expert on Šumava’s history and locals, he helps Pavel solve the case.
