Water has been chosen as a main pillar of Argentine Government policies for the period 2016-2019. The sustainable use of water will contribute in parallel to other socioeconomic policies to eradicate poverty, in harmony with Sustainable Development Goals 2030. Facing this challenge, the National Water Plan (NWP) has been prepared by the Undersecretariat of Water Resources bringing a framework for action whose ultimate goal is to maximize the economic, environmental and social function of water resources. The NWP is structured on four axes according to the principle of water security, through the implementation of which are expected to achieve coherent and integrated goals providing drinking water and sewage for all inhabitants; adaptation to the impact of climate variability and change, protecting society against floods and droughts; enhancing agricultural and industrial production (irrigation for agriculture and afforestation, industrial development), as well as multipurpose use of water and biomass including energy generation. In addition, NWP includes four cross-cutting axes such as water resources protection; capacity building; taking advantage of innovation applied to water resources development looking for further practical solutions. All water policies in a framework of stakeholders co-responsibility and participation. 1.100 Fact sheets USD 1000 Chihuido (Neuquen) Project location: Neuquen river basin Total budget: USD 2200 MM Objectives • Regulate Neuquén river floods reducing probable maximum flow peak from 25,500 m³/s to 11.500 m³/s providing security downstream to more than 700.000 people and 200.000 ha of irrigated farms • Improve water supply for irrigation in a new area of 30.000 ha • Incorporation of 637 MW producing 1,750 GWh of average annual energy • Tourism development Main characteristics • Reservoir: Surface: 18.600 ha • Volume: 5.496 million m3 • Spillway: Long. 100 m with 6 radial gates type 14.7 m wide and 19 m high Chihuido (Neuquen) Adaptation to climate extremes Salado river basin – Reach 4 (Buenos Aires) Project location: Buenos Aires Province Total budget: USD 1.000 MM Objectives • Flood drainage and climate change mitigation • Land reclamation and restoration • Improve agricultural and cattle production • Infrastructure protection against floods • Tourism development Main characteristics • Reach IV length: 200 km • Number of bridges to build: 21 Economic losses due to floods in Salado River Basin • Agricultural losses during 2001 flood: U$S 700 M Adaptation to climate extremes Salado river basin – Reach 4 (Buenos Aires) El Tambolar (San Juan) Quines Dam (San Luis) Project location: San Luis Province Total budget: USD 300 MM Objectives Drinking water, irrigation to new areas (Quines, Candelaria and surrounding), tourist development, as well as flood regulation during the rainy season to safeguard the irrigation areas and erosion control Main technical characteristics • Dam: gravity, crown length, 255 m • Reservoir capacity: 124 hm3 (the maximum reservoir quota, 607.15 m) • Area of the reservoir: 323 ha (the maximum reservoir quota) • High: 110 m • Maximun spillwayy discharge:1,650 m3 / sec • Intake: Two 1,20 m diameter pipes with capacity for 6 m3 / sec Irrigation potential • Irrigation potential: 174.000 Ha Fact sheets LA PLATA PUNTA MÉDANOS SCHEME LA PLATA HARBOR Other projects Projects Other projects Projects A.
