5 RISING STAR Sean Kilpatrick’s 38-point explosion against the Clippers on November 29 was the third-highest scoring game by a Net at Barclays Center since the arena opened in 2012. The second-year guard brought the crowd to its feet with 20 points in the fourth quarter and another 11 in overtime in leading the Nets back from an 18-point deficit to a 127-122 win in double-overtime. Kilpatrick began the season as one of the most effective bench scorers in the NBA, but his role has grown as he’s emerged as the Nets’ No. 2 scorer behind Brook Lopez. Through Dec. 15, Kilpatrick was averaging 16.4 points in just 27.8 minutes per game and riding a stretch where he’d scored 19.8 per game in his last 11 games.

He’s attacked the opportunity with a toughness and poise that impresses. With a hamstring injury suffered by , Whitehead found himself in the starting lineup just 10 days into his first NBA season. At 6-foot-4 and 213 pounds, the former Lincoln HS and Seton Hall star brings a physicality to the role that serves him well when he gets into the paint, where he scored nearly 60 percent of his points over the Nets’ first 24 games.

“I think there are teams that do the individual work, they just do it with their young guys and we do it with everybody. You’re all doing pre- practice. You’re all doing pre-practice performance, you’re all doing pre- practice individual work. I’m not sure how other teams do it. But everybody’s included in the development program, not just our young guys.”

In Lopez, Atkinson found a player perfectly positioned to take the next step.

“He just wanted me to play freely, play with a lot of confidence and be a great leader on the floor,” said Lopez. “Expand my role as a playmaker even more so. Challenge me and test some things that I hadn’t done before.”

The most obvious is the way Lopez has taken his game out beyond the 3-point line. Coming into the season, he’d made three career 3-pointers. In his first 19 games of the season Lopez made three or more 3-pointers in a single game nine times.

Through December 9, Lopez was shooting 38 percent (42-of-111) from 3-point range, ranking him seventh among all NBA centers. Only two players above him, however, were attempting as many as three 3-pointers a game. Lopez, with 31 3-point

24 RONDAE ON A ROLL Second-year forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson came on strong at the end of December. From December 20 through December 26, Hollis-Jefferson scored in double figures in three of four games, with 19 points at Toronto, 13 points at Barclays Center against Golden State and 10 in a home win against Charlotte. THE LOPEZ FILE In his ninth season with the Nets, Brook Lopez continues to climb the franchise’s career leaderboards. Lopez is No. 1 in Nets history with 899 blocks through December 27, having passed George Johnson with three blocks against the Lakers on November 15. Lopez is second in franchise history in points scored, and he’s also moved up to third in rebounds and into fourth in games played. Through December 27, Lopez was one of just two players in the NBA to record 50-plus 3-pointers and 50-plus blocks this season. He was also one of just five players averaging at least 20 points, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game, but the only one averaging fewer than 30 minutes per game. HOW THE NETS SCORE The Nets are among the top five in the NBA through December 27 in several stats that define how they score. For starters, they’re number one in pace, the number of possessions a team uses in a game, with 104.4. From beyond the 3-point line, they’re fourth in the league in 3-pointers made per game (11.1) and third in attempts (33.2). Brooklyn is second in the NBA in drive points per game (22.3) and second in drives per game (34.7). With that, they’re tied for sixth in the league in points in the paint per game (45.9). The Nets get strong scoring off the bench, ranking third in the league in bench points per game (42.1). AGAINST THE CAVALIERS This is the Nets’ second meeting of the season with the Cavaliers. They lost 119-99 on December 23 in Cleveland. The conference-leading Cavs had seven players in double figures in the win.Brook Lopez had 16 points for the Nets. The Nets play the Cavaliers once more during the 2016-17 season, on January 27 in Cleveland. Through December 26, the Cavaliers were fourth in the NBA in points per game, averaging 110.8. Cleveland was also second in the league in 3-point percentage (39.8) and second in attempts per game (33.3), scoring 36 percent of its points from behind the arc, also second in the NBA.

Christmas came early as Randy Foye and Isaiah Whitehead joined 30 local kids for a shopping spree at Modell’s, right across the street from Barclays Center.

“It never gets old because I feel as though everyone that’s in the NBA, especially players that are so blessed, it’s always important to give back to the kids,” said Foye.

T-shirts, sneakers, sweatshirts, hats and more were scooped up by excited kids. The adults had fun with the experience too.

“Trying to make these kids’ holidays better just by walking around the store with them,” said Whitehead. “It’s easy to just give them gift cards and say, ‘hey, just go shopping,’ but when I’m here with them and actually helping them do it, I think it’s great.”

The rookie point guard is a Brooklyn native who starred at Coney Island’s Lincoln High School before going on to Seton Hall and the NBA. Ten of the kids in attendance came from the Coney Island YMCA.

“My main objective is just to show them that I’ll never change,” said Whitehead. “I’m from Coney Island. I feel like I should give back and show them I didn’t forget about Coney Island and I never will.”
