5 6 DINWIDDIE FOR 3 guard Spencer Dinwiddie hit the All-Star break on a hot streak. After making his Nets debut on Dec. 10, Dinwiddie moved into the starting lineup on Jan. 13 and started 15 of 18 games over the next month. Against the on Feb. 15, he put together his finest game as a pro, with a season-high 19 points and eight assists against zero turnovers. That was one game after he knocked down a career- high four 3-pointers against Memphis. In his last 18 games before the break, Dinwiddie shot 50 percent (18 for 36) from 3-point range. And over the last three games, he had 17 assists to just one turnover.

INSIDE AND OUT Brook Lopez made history in the Nets’ final game before the All- Star break, becoming the first NBA player to ever record at least six 3-pointers and eight blocks in the same game. The blocks matched a career high for Lopez, but the combo was indicative of his stellar season. At the break he was one of just four NBA players with more than 80 3-pointers and 80 blocks and one of just three averaging at least 20 points, 2.5 assists and 1.6 blocks per game. Lopez, who earlier this season became the franchise’s career leader in blocks, ranked seventh in the NBA with 1.8 blocks per game going into the All- Star break.

After nine seasons, the Nets had survived the ABA. Along with Denver, San Antonio and Indiana, they were one of four franchises admitted to the NBA for the 1976-77 season.

Coming off three-straight 50-win seasons and the final ABA championship, led by , the Nets looked forward to competing for an NBA title. They loaded up further by trading Brian Taylor and two first-round picks to the Kings for point guard Tiny Archibald.

Over his first six seasons, Archibald had averaged 25.2 points per game, leading the NBA in scoring and assists in the same season in 1974. The Nets sold T-shirts featuring “Dr. J and Tiny A.” But the combo never came to be.

Two days before the team’s NBA debut, Erving was sold to the to cover the costs the franchise incurred in joining the league.

On Oct. 22, 1976, the Nets won their NBA debut, defeating the 104-103. Archibald had 30 points and Super John Williamson added 27 in the win.

But that pairing didn’t last either. Archibald injured his ankle, played just 34 games, and was traded after the season. Williamson played just 42 games before being traded to the in February. In their limited time with the team that season, Williamson averaged 20.8 points per game and Archibald averaged 20.5.

The Nets lost 13 straight in the middle of the season and 15 of 16 to close the year to finish 22-60. In their final game at , they lost 89-88 to Indiana on April 1, 1977 as Williamson scored 23 for the Pacers.

With the first round pick acquired in the Williamson trade, the Nets drafted Bernard King. The first player ever selected by the Nets in an NBA Draft, King averaged 24.2 points as a rookie and 21.6 in 1978-79 before being traded to Utah. The only Hall of Famer drafted by the Nets, King returned to the team for his final season in 1992.

For the 1977-78 season, the Nets relocated to New Jersey for the first of four seasons at the . They made their first NBA playoff appearance in 1979 and moved into the brand-new Brendan Byrne Arena — later Continental Airlines Arena and IZOD Center — for the 1981-82 season. Considering his old team is nearly on the other side of the country, Jeffrey Ahn got used to hitting the road for hoops. Ahn adopted the Nets after two of his favorite players, and Andrei Kirilenko, came to Brooklyn. So now he makes a few trips a year to follow the Nets, like a visit to Golden State last season, where he saw a near upset of the record-setting team. And the buzzer-beating win over the eventual-champ Warriors two years ago is one of his favorite Barclays Center memories. “That’s why I come back here.” As for the current Nets, while Trevor Booker did come here from Utah, it’s the culture of the entire roster that has Ahn excited. “This whole team, it’s full of high-character guys. People you can root for. I’m just hoping they all pan out as a team or even as individuals.”

EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION Kilpatrick and Dinwiddie celebrate role models with Brooklyn students

As part of Nets2Schools and Black History Month, Sean Kilpatrick and Spencer Dinwiddie visited PS 156 in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

Dinwiddie and Kilpatrick spoke with the students about influential black role models that had a personal impact on their lives.

The students also took turns reading passages from the book Because of them We Can, which features images of children posing as black heroes and trail blazers to empower the next generation.
